A Princess Next Door (Rothman Royals Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 738 ratings

I was born the oldest princess of a tiny country in the Alps, which means my future has been planned out for me since I was an infant. I was supposed to marry a rich, arrogant stranger to help restore the royal bank accounts, but I decided to go to college in the States instead.

It was the one act of rebellion in my very sheltered life. That's how I met Jack Watson. He lives next door, and he's the nicest, sexiest guy I've ever known.

My time here is almost over, though. Soon I have to go back home and be the daughter my family and country expects. So there's no sense in letting Jack seduce me with his slow smile, his skillful hands, and his husky drawl. Even if I was allowed to have him for a boyfriend, Jack hates formal occasions, pretentious people, and being the center of attention. He'd never hook up with a princess.

Which is why he can never know who I am.

Noelle handwrote her first romance novel in a spiral-bound notebook when she was twelve, and she hasn't stopped writing since. She has lived in eight different states and currently resides in Virginia, where she reads any book she can get her hands on and offers tribute to a very spoiled cocker spaniel.

She loves travel, art, history, and ice cream. After spending far too many years of her life in graduate school, she has decided to reorient her priorities and focus on writing contemporary romances.

A Princess Next Door is the first of a series featuring the Rothman royal family, rulers of a small Alpine country bordering Switzerland and France. Amalie is studying art in Minneapolis to the chagrin of her mother who wanted her daughter to follow the royal tradition of arranged marriages and had picked out a suitable partner. But Amalie refused, and set off to study in America. Still she feels the weight of her royal duties and isn't sure for how long she can put her mother off. It's not helping that her sexy and kind and handsome (and did I mention sexy?) neighbour Jack keeps showing his interest. Even knowing she'll be leaving in a few short weeks, Amalie finally accedes to his friendly request for a pizza dinner at his apartment and for a little while is able to let go of the pressure of being a princess in hiding. When their friendship moves forward, they agree it'll just be a casual arrangement without strings. Sex with Jack is fun and exciting and Amalie knows she's going to miss him terribly when she moves back home. She's been keeping the secret of her true identity from him but it's getting more and more difficult, especially with the paparazzi having finally noticed her. As they spend more time together, their feelings become stronger. When Jack finds out the truth of her heritage, will he still be interested in a relationship? And will Amalie get to choose her own future?

What a fun story! It takes a fictional royal family and imbues in them the characteristics we've come to expect from people in that position - a sense of duty, a strong family history, a pleasant public persona, etc. While the main focus is on Amalie and her struggles to do what is right for her versus what is right for her family and kingdom, we also get an introduction to her siblings and parents. They each have an important part to play in Amalie's life and this affects her decisions. But she stuck to her guns when it came to going off to university, and doesn't regret that decision even though it caused stress in her relationship with both her mother and her closest sister Victoria. Jack runs a successful sporting goods company and is in his early thirties (while Amalie is 24). The age difference isn't really noticeable as Amalie has had a very different upbringing than other women and had expected to be married off to an older man. He's a hard working professional who generally leaves the office at work and takes things casually at home. Public situations aren't his favorite but they are part of his job. Amalie expects that once he finds out who she is, the public expectations of her position will put him off entirely and she'll lose his friendship and any chance at a more serious relationship. Their easy camaraderie is bound to change but in the end, the decisions that are made give proof to the fantasy that a royal and a commoner can have a happy ending. It's a lighthearted read with some sexy scenes and I look forward to reading more in the series.

Even a princess can want to live her life for herself. As the book opens, we are introduced to the main character, Princess Amalie Rothman of the small principality of Villemont, which is located in the Swiss Alps. She knows all too well the responsibilities that come with her life as a Rothman and a royal. She is conflicted since she wants continue her education and study art history in the United States. Her mother wants her to marry to help ensure the royal coffers stay full and has already chosen the wealthy prospective groom. Amalie gets her way and flash forward 4 years and she is studying in Minnesota about to complete an undergraduate degree. No spoilers beyond what the title implies is that she is the “princess” next door.

I enjoyed the book since it was a fun read of a HEA. The HEA is the only spoiler I want to share. While I am not versed in royal lifestyle beyond reading the occasional news story, I found the premise to be believable. I am also hoping that this is the first story in more to come to follow the rest of the Rothman family in their pursuit of life, love and happiness.

A Princess Next Door is about a royalty living in plain sight "undercover", and fell for a commoner, but it's just a fling, right?

Amalie "Amy" Rothman is living undercover in the US. As the oldest princess of the Rothmans, of a tiny kingdom up in the Alps, she was as useful as a chess piece, to be married off for alliances and such. She refused to marry her intended match, "Edward Farmingham Channing IV", solely to replenish the royal coffers. Instead she went off to a small school in Minnesota to do an art degree under a certain professor she wanted to study under. Four years later, school's about to end, but she did not want to go home. Her neighbor next door is Jack Watson. Despite the American swagger, he's handsome... AND nice. Amy decided to have a fling with Jack. She's leaving in a month. Besides, Jack hates formals, doesn't own a suit, and will never hook up with a princess... if he knew who she really is. But when circumstances forced her identity into the open... will she sacrifice herself for her family... or may Amy be willing to abandon it all?

The romance is a bit of meh, nothing too special. The guy's a bit too nice, and the deus ex machina ending was rather disappointing.

When you love someone you become unselfish and want to make them happy, fulfil their needs and spend your days with them. Normal couples get all the time together but that doesn't mean it's not possible for every couple to make as much time together. This book had me smiling, crying and reading it to the end before putting it down.

As soon as I found this book from my kindle, I just knew that I had to get this most beautiful story. The Princess Next Door from the series, Rothman Royal book one. I have been so lucky to have already read and enjoyed a few enjoyable stories from Noelle Adams. All being so glorious and sweet novels in the past. Such the most wonderful romantic story. I just adored these most passionate characters too.

Amalie was born into royalty. She had been expected to marry whoever her parents wanted her to, which she wasn't happy about either. By the time Amalie reached twenty years old she had finally decided for a change and study at Minneapolis University.

There she met her gorgeous neighbour, Jack Watson. He was such a hard worker. Although he was so different to her and lived such a different life to her, with her private escort to keep her safe, Amalie was just so lucky to have Jack living so close. Always to help her out, and just to have someone friendly close by too!

I loved this most wonderful romantic tale. So well written by, Noelle Adams. Such a fun, loving story too. Can't wait to read the next one too!!

    * I recommend this book to everyone!!
