ARKANE Thriller Boxset 2: One Day in Budapest, Day of the Vikings, Gates of Hell (ARKANE Boxset) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 165 ratings

Escape into three more ARKANE adventures…

One Day In Budapest

Nationalistic fervor. Genocidal violence. The first time, the world went to war. This time, the world could end.

When a priest is murdered and one of the holiest relics of Christendom stolen, the ultra-nationalist Eröszak group is ready.

Fanning flames of hatred into a firestorm of anti-Semitic violence the likes of which haven’t been seen since the darkest days of World War II, Eröszak’s leader has the perfect plan to turn Hungary — and later, the world — into a nightmare of fascist rule.

They’ve planned for every option, for every eventuality… except one: Dr. Morgan Sierra, agent of ARKANE.

Morgan didn’t intend to get involved — she was just in Budapest to deliver a pair of artifacts to the historic Dohany Street synagogue. But when Eröszak’s thugs attack, Morgan finds herself the only thing standing between them and the overthrow of an entire government.

Nazi fanaticism, religious relics, and the blood of innocents combine to create a mystery fit for an agent of ARKANE — the British agency tasked with the uncovering of and defense against the supernatural.

And Morgan knows that she only has one chance to stop Eröszak and its leader. Because if she doesn’t, history may well repeat itself — only this time, the forces of darkness will win.

Day of the Vikings

She has been called many things: murderer, madwoman, monster. She will become only one thing: a god.

The Crone. A woman of legend, a creature of blood. A Valkyrie. She has tortured, murdered, maimed — performing all the rituals needed to call forth the power of Odin himself and summon Ragnarok. She just needs one more thing: the staff of Skara Brae, and her plans will be fulfilled.

But the staff is already in the hands of Morgan Sierra. An agent of ARKANE, the British agency tasked with protecting the world from supernatural crises, Morgan knows that giving up the staff could spell the end of all things.

Now the Crone has taken dozens of staff members, visitors — even children — hostage at the British Museum, demanding that Morgan turn over the staff. Willing to kill, possessor of powers beyond anything ARKANE has yet encountered, the Crone seems unstoppable.

Morgan’s only advantages are her wit, her skill… and Blake Daniel (of the best-selling Brooke and Daniel crime thriller series).

The Crone beckons. Ragnarok looms. And it is up to Morgan and Blake to deny them both.

Gates of Hell

For millennia, they have held the gates of Hell shut against the darkness. But now they’re gone… and the gates are swinging wide.

When ARKANE agent Morgan Sierra receives a package with a note from her father — murdered in a suicide bombing years ago — she goes on high alert.

Her father’s death was no accident. A member of the Remnant — a group of holy men schooled in the deepest mysteries of Kabbalah — her father was one of those charged with protecting our world from the demons that want to take it; to keep sealed the gates of Hell.

Now, Morgan and her ARKANE partner Jake Timber are on the run. From the holiest cities in Israel to underwater cities lost to history, they must follow this trail to the end. To find a way to stop Kadmon before he offers the final sacrifice. A sacrifice of pain. A sacrifice of blood. A sacrifice of one of the children of the Remnant.

This is a review of Gates of Hell, which is one of the books contained in the box set. This is book number six in the Arkane series. Each book builds on each other but can be read separately. They are all fantastic stand alone novels!! Extremely fast paced action thriller with a dark side. Deals with some of the darker aspects of the Jewish religion. Centered primarily in Spain as well as Israel. Penn has the gift to transport you there through her writing. Extensive research of a subject is one of her many trademarks. The two primary characters Morgan and Jake complement each other well. A stupendous read!!! Could not put it down!!!! Penn has no equals!!!

I enjoy the authors writing style and her blended approach to storytelling. She works hard to give her stories realism while keeping the suspense level high. Her style falls down a little for me in that this series is too formulaic. Someone is always being sacrificed to some evil entity. If you can live with that, you should enjoy this series. I intend to purchase and finish reading the series because I'm a beginning writer and find the author's writing enjoyable.

I've been an avid fan of Joanna Penn's nonfiction, but I recently picked up her ARKANE series just for fun. And what fun it is! While I have liked all of the first 6 I've read, Gates of Hell was my favorite. I could not put it down!

I originally learned about J F Penn via a daily newsletter. Tried her for the first book of the series & then followed up with more from this author. Unfortunately, I've stayed up too many nights to get to the end!! Really liked them & also liked the thoughts about traditional Christianity. Also, love the Carolyn McCray books for same reasons.

Museums ( including such religious places having reliquaries in their care) are often fun places to visit for the history contained therein. Depending, of course, on your reason for interest in such places. But in the hands of author J. F. Penn they are just the springboard to satisfying the power lust of individuals in the pursuit for a means to gain the ultimate.
Be it political power, the revival of Viking revival or unleashing hell on earth, the motivations may vary but the pursuit of such arcane powers are chilling in the extreme.
This second box set is an excellent example of such. ARKANE agent Morgan Sierra, more than anybody might have suspected, in these three chilling thrillers, discover reason enough in her past and recent experience to pursue such in an effort to save the innocent. Hair raising seems quite a tame description when exposed to these escapades.
    Enjoy.

I got so into reading these that I missed my stop several times while travelling - still, the exercise walking back a few stops was welcome. The series continues, the characters develop and the imagination continues to be engaged! The historical backdrop to these novels reflect the indebt research carried out by the author and definitely makes this series unique. I only discovered Penn as a writer recently and she has been added to the list of those authors whose new works are eagerly awaited...

Loved the fact that I had the box set to read, I'm an avid reader so I could really get my teeth into them. Great style of writing and great story lines. I have read box set one and couldn't put the books down. It's not often you get a mix of crime and a mixture of religions, really well thought out combination. Thank you J F Penn
