A Sanctuary for Soulden (The Lords of Bucknall Club Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 347 ratings

He wasn't meant for a quiet life.

Philip Winthrop, Viscount Soulden, is a fop. An idle popinjay with nothing more on his mind than how to best knot his cravat. He definitely doesn’t spy against the French. Or arrange hasty weddings. Or occasionally commandeer the navy. And he certainly doesn’t seek out mortal danger in order to combat his pervasive ennui. It’s all just a big misunderstanding when he’s shot by a French intelligence officer during a merry riverside chase. And what a wonderful bit of quick thinking to pretend to be a corpse in order to get himself taken to the local surgeon's autopsy cellar. The French will never find him there. If the French are even looking for him. Which they’re not. Now he just needs to locate a way out before this surgeon fellow attempts to dissect him.

He'd rather deal with the dead than the living.

Surgeon Edmund Fernside does his best to heal the living, but in truth, he'd much rather look into the gaping chest cavity of a corpse than into the startling blue eyes of a...corpse that just climbed off his autopsy table. Well then. Lord Soulden is clearly a man with some complicated secrets. But with the French in hot pursuit and a rather brutal gunshot wound, Soulden’s not going anywhere anytime soon, and Fernside discovers that he enjoys the pleasure of his company. In more ways than one.

Now, trusting each other could mean the difference between life and death.

As Soulden learns to be still for the first time in his life, Fernside wonders if perhaps it’s time to spread his wings a little. They can only hide from the outside world—and from their pasts—for so long before the secrets they’ve uncovered about each other strain the growing attraction between them. Each man must decide whether a life of comfortable lies is preferable to one full of difficult truths. And whether the sanctuary they’ve created together is something worth fighting for.

A Sanctuary for Soulden
is the fourth book in the Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

I was worried this series would be kind of "paint by numbers," with each book being a slight variation on the other. There are a lot of series like that. But I was pleased to find that The Lords of Bucknall Club wasn't like that at all. I really enjoyed this book in particular. It's great to see Regency romances set in a world where MM romance is normalized.

Yet another wonderful book from Rock and Henry. I've enjoyed all of them tremendously.

It's refreshing to be convinced that the rich, gorgeous man is genuinely attracted to the plump, poor one. And I do believe it. The authors know exactly how to describe it so that it sounds genuine and sweet rather than lip service to body positivity.

I loved this one. Soulden has been a character who has popped up throughout the series but getting to know him and see him fall for his surgeon was excellent. A great combination of action and romance.

Each coupling of the members of Bucknall have been varied and interesting. I've loved the regency time period's societal openness to love and coupling. It is easy and accepted. Huzzah.
Phillip and Edmund have a delightful time sort of avoiding bullets and getting dead and solving the mystery of treasonous import. Enjoyed the latest installment and am looking forward to more from these authors.

I was looking forward to Soulden’s story after being introduced to him in previous books in the series. Unfortunately, Soulden was paired with boring, practical, somewhat macabre Fernside. Also, in the getting to know each other stage, Soulden is confined to a small, dark room and has to use a chamber pot (which Fernside then has to empty). While realistic, it’s too realistic. At one point, Fernside enters the room, makes a comment about the chamber pot (it “stinks to high heaven”) and, before emptying it, he and Soulden have sex. All I could think about while reading the scene was how gross the room must smell. Not really what I want to be thinking about. All of the above sounds so negative, but there were positives. It’s well-written, we learned about Soulden’s past and I liked seeing the guys from the previous books. I will definitely read the next book in the series because I’ve loved the previous ones.

Back stories provide us many of the more emotional scenes between these characters we've now known across four books.

Motivations, why their relationships are the way they are, what it will take for them to achieve progress and, maybe, secure support and love with a partner.

Of the four books, this one includes the highest levels of serious subject matter. Moral debates, familial complications, and more.

The past informs the present, and it breeds the challenges of mystery, curiosity, doubt, and hope.

A classic storytelling structure that pulls us in, has us asking what will they do and how will they do it.

It all leads to I need ta know all the things!

Luckily, we have two pros here giving us all the stuffs we want. :D

Heartbreaking and heartwarming and hilarious, all at once. Two very different men, both convinced that they were destined to be alone, find solace in each other. Plus, we get more of “The Gnats” from A Rival for Rivington. One of my favorite books of the year.

Historical romance + spies will get me every time. I already knew I was going to enjoy this one. Every glimpse of Soulden in the previous books caught my interest. At first, I was put off by Fernside. I'm not sure why I had a different image of him in my mind. Bias, perhaps? I imagined him old, to begin with. But I guess that was poorly done of me. I suspect he was adequately described in Gale's book and I just wasn't paying attention. Fitz was also a nice surprise. Fiercely loyal friendships are amazing and.. gods, I can't believe I'm saying this: I even enjoyed Notely and Rivingdon's appearances. The plot itself was interesting and I look forward to seeing more of Aumont in the next one!

Love this series, listening to them all on audible. They are brilliant witty and fun.
Though this one was my favourite, how honesty in a relationship makes everything beautiful and feel so real.
Edmond and Phillip are perfect for each other.
    A truly beautiful witty story.

This was my most favourite in the series. Writing is great. The appearance of older characters really adds to the story and characterisation.
