"My name is Sam. Alice, the love of my life, lives 170 miles away, and she's stopped answering the phone. So, I'm leaving the safety of my home to see if she is OK.

A simple journey. Except the roads are abandoned, the cities are quarantined and London is in a state of evacuation.

I have a plan. Not only do I have a plan, but I've seen enough apocalypse films to prepare. I can be the hero Alice needs. I have to be...

170 miles, over 50 million potential zombies, and Alice won’t pick up the phone... oh yeah, the dead have started walking.

Just another day in England."

****

Among The Dead follows the young, self-proclaimed hero Sam as he leaves his family and the quarantined safety of his city: Bristol. He is searching for the love of his life, Alice, who he lost contact with. He doesn’t even know if she is alive but he has to believe everything will be fine.

The world was barely ending, yet it was already falling apart. The citizens of England are under a martial law, the Government acted like nothing was wrong, violence spread among the cities, and the dead were walking.

Sam will be faced with decisions he could never be prepared for; he will face questions of his own morality. Worst of all, Sam will realise he isn’t the hero of the books and video-games he thought he was. This is the real world. There are monsters walking the streets; living and dead.

****

Authors Note: This book series will have a lot of content which could be considered "distressing" to some. It will use tropes associated with apocalypse fiction, including violence and abuse on physical and mental level. This will not be the case for every book but, as a series in general, it deals with some very dark themes. Please be aware of this before buying it.

About the Author

I always enjoyed reading fictional worlds, but creating my own was always my passion. My Year 8 English teacher told me I should pursue writing after a short story I had written for a school project.

Things changed and life moved on, but even while I was graduating from my Bachelors and Masters in Psychology, I still wrote stories and I still loved doing it. Writing is my passion, and everything else I do is a means for me to carry on with that passion.

I'm also prepared to move to a secure location at a zombie's notice ...

I wasn't to into it in the beginning of this series. But the more I kept reading, the more it pulled more me in. I read all three volumes, one right after the other so my review for all three will be the same. This series is good. I need a volume 4. I hate loose ends.

The story is good. The characters are good. It has me speculating what I would do in some of these situations. It seems more about the events and people than zombies, although zombies are a good feature. Overall it's a good book.

I was browsing around on a social media platform and came across a post that mentioned Among the Dead. As someone has a deep love for all things horror, particularly undead/zombie lore, I decided to purchase this book and give it a go. Much of the contemporary media surrounding this subject is very hit or miss. This one hit with me. The book is structured well, and transitions nicely which helped me burn through it with a fervor that would put any zombie outbreak fever to shame. A fun read in world when escapism is a welcomed commodity. I look forward to reading the next installments.

Ryan Colley has done it the right way. Great Britain has fallen to the dead, can Sam find his true love in the horror of it all? Friends and family are always on his mind as he travels across the country. Will he be able to keep His sanity?

I really enjoyed reading!! I don't want to give anything away. Great story! Characters you will truly care about and definitely some you won't. I liked how different parts of the story were written from other characters point of view. The only negative for me was the end...when you read it you'll understand. If you like a well written zombie apocalypse grab this book! Mr Colley I'll be (im)patiently waiting the next book.

I took me a minute to get caught up in the story But once I did I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sam's mental dialog was interesting and I enjoyed getting to know James and just as sad to read about his loss. I'll look forward to reading more of this storyline.

Bristol is, or was my home town.
That is what drew me to this book originally.
I enjoyed the storyline, hated parts of it. People died, I don’t like it when people I like die!
And first person, I like conversations between people.
But I am looking forward to the next book.
    I would recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking story - can’t wait to read the other two books

This book was recommended to me by a friend and I really like it.
Written in first-person - almost conversational - style, I found I was quickly swept up in the storyline and wanting to know what happened to Sam next.
I’ve finished this one and have just cracked open book 2. :-)

Firstly, as a long time DayZ player I appreciate the (perceived) homage!
To be brutally honest, the zombie genre is a difficult one to break new ground and I felt as though this was a touch generic in places and had an air of 28 Days Later to an extent, with one certain event feeling a little derivative.
However, great pacing keeps it ticking along really nicely and the main character is likeable and you want him to succeed and you want to follow him through his story.
There are a couple of bits that are real gut punches, I won't go into them in case someone stumbles on this and it would act as a spoiler for them and those bits are really well written and fit in with the narrative very well.
I read a lot and I know what I like and what I don't like and I really enjoyed this and I will be looking out for the next part as I want to see if my theory about the ending pans out.
Overall, a very enjoyable read that sits comfortably alongside Max Brooks' take on the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story 👍

We’ve all been asked “What would you do during a zombie apocalypse?” Among the Dead answers the similar question “What would you do during a zombie apocalypse if your loved one was halfway across the country?”

And the answer here is a sort of zombie road trip where our main character, Sam, comes to learn much about the infection (and yet not much at all), as well as coming to learn much about himself and what he is capable of once the rules of society are gone. His motives are relatable, his abilities are slightly above average but this is made up for by the realistic ‘sods law’ moments which still manage to throw a spanner in the works.

All in all an enjoyable trek through the apocalypse.

Hmmm? So what would I do? I’d head for my nearest school, most have prebuilt metal fences, should be mostly empty of any infected.......

OK I'm cheating writing my review here, just a copy and paste from convo with the Author (who is brilliant!)

I felt like I was doing the trip. Them got mad cause I want to know what happens next lol

I've had that mad reaction off quite a few people haha.

Lol, also the baby rub thing, I could psychologically smell it. That might be cause I'm weird though

Was that with the putting up their nose?
    Yeah

For me it's such a distinct smell. Whenever I'm ill I cover myself in it and hate the smell as a result
    Lol.
Yeah. But that reaction reading it, sort of makes it feel very real in the story
Pulls the reader into the story
Rather than sitting outside. At least for me,

Hopefully this doesn't spoil it for anyone!! :)
