What if the apocalypse isn't about nuclear war and a zombie invasion? What if it is a gradual death? A dying planet. A government plan. What could possibly go wrong? Due to the depletion of Earth's resources, top scientists around the world have come up with a plan. If the earth could rest from human interference for twenty years, it would renew itself. However, to accomplish this, the entire human race would need to be placed in stasis in newly constructed Suspended Animation Centers. "Get ready to hit the SAC and have the best rest of your life." Trusting the government with his life and the lives of his parents doesn't come easy for Timothy Stone, especially since his father has Alzheimer's. Waking up to find his father missing and his mother, along with thousands of others, still asleep was his first hint that something had gone terribly wrong. Now Tim must decide if he is going to stay the sheltered man of his past or step up and become the man his father never thought he could be. Before he can do anything, though, he must find his father first.

As the environment spirals out of control, maybe it’s not so impossible to imagine a world where the government demands that everyone sleep for a while, giving the earth a chance to recover.

Okay, I’m not sure I’m sold on the concept. But I was quickly sold on this enjoyable book, in which impending catastrophe demands unquestioning obedience. And then those questions, so forcably suppressed, become the truth behind a different kind of disaster.

The world to which protagonist Timothy Stone reawakens is very different from the one he fell asleep in. And nature really does appear to have recovered. There’s something truly enticing about scenes of Oregon townscapes overcome by wilderness, and there’s the added bonus for anyone living here of recognizing locations so intriguingly changed. But then there’s the threat beneath it all – who wakens when and why? And what’s happened to the people who were meant to be in charge? And… where is Timothy’s father whose Alzheimer’s almost echoes the pain of the world.

I really enjoyed this book, and my suspension of disbelief was entirely willing and well worth it. Definitely recommended.

Disclosure: I got it on a deal and I offer my honest review.

I bought both of Sunny Morro's book and found both very informative and well written!

McCraken's vision of the future is realistic and riveting, a story that moves along quickly, filled with some interesting characters and events. Set in and around Hillsboro, Oregon, the environment and place names will be familiar to those from the Portland Metropolitan area, less so to those outside it, but the detail does not detract from the plot. Although courage and compassion play major parts in the story line, most of the principal characters have flaws and fears that maintain the credibility of the narrative. I am a sucker for this type of future-gone-wrong-and-now-what-do-we-do type of story and would have given it five stars based on the premise. However, there were a number of distracting typos and sudden shifts in POV that should have received more attention during editing. I hope that the author can have these corrected and also revise some repetitive statements that become obvious when reading the story in a couple of sittings. In fact, that is what I did, gobbled it down as quickly as I could because Awake is readable, enticing, and entertaining. It has a few adult themes but would be suitable for the young adult audience as well as the mature SciFi fan. I look forward to reading other stories by James McCracken.AWAKE

This futuristic story is suspenseful and scary from the perspective of knowing who to trust. The author's use of mostly short sentences kept the tension moving throughout. It was hard for me to stop reading. The book could use an edit pass.

Good story, but desperately needs an editor. I actually hope this was a draft that accidentally got published...or kindle messed it up horribly. If the story hadn’t been decent, I wouldn’t have read more than a few pages.

The earth is overpopulated. Stress on our planet and it's resources have finally taken a toll. So the government comes up with the idea to put people in stasis for 20 years. Special buildings are prepared in each town to cover the population. It seems 20 years is an acceptable length of time in which, hopefully the planet will renew itself.
Nothing should go wrong. But it does. A radical group is bombing the centers & some of the caretakers are losing their mind. What else? The list...mental illness, disabilities, felons, older people..they will not be awoken.
The characters were good. Just hard to get a feel for them. Sometimes Tim (the main character) seems a little childish & lost.
The storyline was good, wish the author had expanded a little bit more of what really was going on.
All in all an enjoyable read...😊
