Across the Sapphire Sea: Immortal Jewels Volume II: (MM Medieval Fantasy Romance) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 295 ratings

Love at first… death. “Do it. Kill him for me. Take me with you.”

Elias—plucked from indentured servitude at nineteen and turned into a vampire—is caught in a spiraling relationship with his possessive sire.

Valeri—a damaged soul who guards his secrets and fledgling alike—balances on a razor’s edge of good and evil.

In a race to save one of their own from a deadly sickness, Valeri and Elias lead an unlikely team on a dangerous voyage to pry secrets from an ancient group of vampires—a group that’s been known to kill trespassers.

The closer they come to discovering the truth, the wider the rift between Elias and Valeri grows—until Elias doubts the relationship can be saved.

Will they find a cure in time? Can Elias and Valeri make it to the other side together, or will ancient secrets shatter their bond forever?

***

Across the Sapphire Sea is an MM Paranormal Romance packed with action & adventure, a steamy love story, and danger at every turn. This is book two of a series and contains its own story and HEA with no cliffhanger, but author recommends reading Beneath the Opal Arc first for the most enjoyment. Novel contains scenes intended for mature readers, full warnings inside.

I enjoyed the character growth and story arc. Lee Colgin had a wonderful talent for immersive story telling. I recommend.

The reason for only four stars is that this one has a lot more angst than I prefer. However, considering that this is my second time reading this series I can easily say that it's worth it. As I said, this is very well written. If you haven't read Beneath the Opal Arc then this will be a spoiler...

One of the men in this couple was presented in a very negative light in book one and frankly that view doesn't change much for me for the majority of this story. However the way he's portrayed is refreshingly, albeit brutally, honest. Also, the dynamics between the primary couple as well as with the other characters is fascinating in how it plays out in the overall storyline. Ultimately, in my opinion, this is a must read!

If you've already read Lee Colgin, you know what you're in for: rich detail, steamy sex, charming romance. This one's a bit different from the first volume, in that there's a compelling non-linear storytelling style (which 100% worked for me and wasn't jarring at all), and a difficult romantic relationship.
As much as I adored the charm of the romance in the first volume, I have to say this one hit me harder emotionally. An imperfect, painful, realistic romance, with very hot sex.
    SEMI-SPOILERS:
Highly recommend for anyone who enjoys:
-redemption arc - as in, how - HOW - is this Valeri MC going to get redeemed by the end of the story?!
-someone teaches someone how to read
-a sensual and satisfying telling of what happens in your body when you get turned into a vampire by a hot guy you like

I'm a sucker for angst and this delivers. 100%. I love the back and forth between past and present (it did take a hot second to get into the switch, but when I did I was def hooked into needing both their past and present). Loved the different POVs. I really liked getting into Valeri's head most because he can be a super d-bag. But he loves Elias. So much that he'd be willing to let him go. It takes him a hot second to get there, and it's so heart breaking when he does. I enjoyed seeing Laurence and sweet Remy again. But let me tell ya, Lee always delivers on the sexy and this is no exception. Sex scenes of hotness up in here! Really looking forward to book three! <3

First of all, I must say this book is good. I was laughing, cheering, and fussing as I read it. Remy and Laurence are back. But this book is more about two others, Valeri and Elias, and their complex relationship. Valeri is the sire of Elias and is very selfish and controlling. Of course Elias is loving and grateful but it is wearing thin. Plus they must go on a journey to save an elder vampire’s life and Valeri knows more about the quest anyone in the group but does not share his knowledge. The people who know of the cure kill anyone who come near them. Valeri thinks he has everything under control but is he ready to pay the price?

It’s so much mini drama. Ffs people, just talk to each other and don’t be a prick. The anxiety in this book was way to high for me. Which is too bad because I think the actual storyline was one of her better ones.

Spent the entire book rooting for and against the main characters. Really good book to read. Glad to see the characters are not perfect, but perfectly flawed like real people.

This is an excellent second book in a series. It stands alone well, but you will enjoy reading about the supporting characters in the first book. Valeri and Elias have a complicated relationship but I loved reading about them figuring it out. The action was exciting, it had great visual descriptions and sizzling sex scenes. I look forward to the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible mm fantasy romance
Reviewed in Canada on April 16, 2021
WOW. This series is incredible. The characters and world building are terrific and the continuation of the story started in the first book is amazing to read. This book made me laugh and cry and contemplate life and love. It takes a lot to make me cry at a book but the main relationship focus of this story between Elias and his maker Valeri put me through the emotional wringer. While I sometimes just want to read something simple and easy there are times that I want something more complex and this series is definitely one of those. One of the things that I really liked about this book is that while it is complex it is still easy to follow. I have read books that even though they are great reads, I needed a cheat guide in order to keep up but with this book I was never lost as to what was going on. That is harder to do with a series like this. I don’t like writing terribly long reviews so I will just say that if you like mm fantasy romance then I highly recommend this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read

This book follows from where book 1 finished, and you definitely need to read that book first - I don't believe this would work as a stand alone. Valeri was a more complex and somewhat likeable character than I was expecting. Elias put up with a lot, but also saw the good in him, and had those special moments with Valeri where he was kind and caring. As we learn more of Valeri's past (with some chapters jumping back in time to give us the first hand experience of those key events), it is clear he is a product of his upbringing - both as human and vampire. He did start to redeem himself right near the end, but this book wrapped up just when he and Elias agreed to start over and be partners on equal ground. The storyline was interesting, and I loved that we still got to see a bit of Laurence and Remy, and see them progressing their magical studies. We also meet a few new characters too. Looking forward to reading Mahu's book next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Changing a broken man
Reviewed in Australia on January 12, 2023
This started out with me getting all up and frustrated with the back flashes. I would preferred it as a more effective narrative told in a more chronological manner. Perhaps that's just me but I didn't let that distract too much with the idea. Great story just for me a bit difficult to read through easily.
