Against the Rush: Philadelphia Power series Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 35 ratings

Jalen Daniels loves his job as a hockey coach to kids in the Philadelphia Power’s youth league. Coaching in the same league he played in and volunteering his time to a charity that brings the game to underserved communities takes up much of his time. The rest is filled with playing hockey in a rec league and bouncing at a nightclub. Meeting Leif Larsson, star player for the Power and father of one of the kids he coaches, knocks Jalen's busy life off balance and leaves him craving Philly's favorite Swede.

Philadelphia Power defenseman Leif Larsson has devoted the last four years to being a dad and a hockey player, in that order. Focusing on being the best dad for his daughter and the best teammate and player for the team was all that mattered. But when he sees Jalen at a charity event, their connection is strong enough to push his heart into pursuing the talented, surprising, handsome man.

Amid the bustle of hockey season, the sparks between Jalen and Leif ignite into something bigger and brighter than they’ve ever experienced. But navigating a relationship when their conflicting schedules make meeting up close to impossible is harder on their hearts than they anticipated. Can they find a way to score a win for love?

Jalen and Leif have to work really hard at making time to be together. They are both super busy but in the end they work it out. Their story is really good, the secondary characters are a great at supporting this great couple. Leif's daughter is a crack up, even when she is a bit of a naughty girl. I really loved it! I was familiar with the work of this talented duo from the Love and Rugby series. And I can tell that I am going to enjoy the stories from the Power just as much. They specialize in telling the stories of driven and talented athletes and men with unique but strong families. In this story Leif has a daughter with a woman he dated briefly. The decided they were better as friends before discovering the pregnancy. Instead of this being a source of conflict they successfully co parent. And when Leif starts falling for Jalen, his daughter's hockey coach, it is obvious that he adores her also. I also liked that the conflict was so relatable. Instead of fears of being outed they are forced to wrestle with schedules and the commitments of modern life. I can't wait to see who is up next!

Against the Rush is a slow burn romance between two guys who have a instant and strong connection but who have to figure out how they can make it work. Both are extremely busy with professional and family commitments that take up quite a bit of their time. But when you meet someone that you are drawn to so completely, you’ll just have to figure things out.

I liked both Jalen and Leif – they are sensible, giving, and loving. They approach life and relationships with careful thought and hard work. Are there bumps along the way, sure, but that’s pretty much life. Plus, they wear their hearts on their sleeves and it’s just the sweetest.

I will say my only complaint is that some of the writing is a little …. flowery? The similes and metaphors got just a bit out there for me. It only happened in a handful of places but if a reader is anything like my husband that’s going to be a big nope right out of the gate so I wanted to throw it out there.

Overall, though, readers who likes a slower paced, realistic love story will enjoy Leif & Jalen’s story. It’s full of real-life moments, relationships, and issues. There’s hardly any drama or angst, just a couple slowly getting to know each other and falling in love.

This is the first book about a hockey team called the Philadelphia Power. It is by two authors that are new to me, Chantal Mer & Susan Scott Shelley. It is a sweet story about Leif, a single dad hockey celebrity, and Jalen, his daughter’s hockey coach. It is an instant attraction from the second they meet. The story follows them as they go from attraction to love, and how they deal with the obstacles they face getting there. I loved how cute Leif’s daughter was and how much she loved Jalen.
This book would be so much better if the author would ease up on the over-the-top and flowery descriptions. For example, Jalen’s reaction to Leif’s smile is described as leaving him “as light-headed as a Victorian-era woman in a too-tight corset.” Later on, his heart is “revving like drag racers down Columbus Boulevard.” The phrases were so strange they would take me out of the story and halt the flow of the book.
I still liked the book. If you ignore the strange phrases here and there, it’s a really sweet story.

I am not sure what I was expecting from this book but I was not prepared for the sweetness overload that was Lief, Jalen, and Thea combined. It was too adorable. I know a lot of people don’t like using the word sweet to describe a book because they feel it labels a book too fluffy without any heat, but I have to disagree. This book has sweetness and spice and a whole lot of love. Lief and Jalen have instant and insanely scorching chemistry that will not be denied. This is a no angst lovely hockey romance about the budding relationship between a kids’ hockey coach and a star hockey player whose kid happens to be on his team. I don’t think that I have read anything by this duo before but I will be looking up their backlist because I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was just the fluff I needed today. I couldn’t stop reading it. The only drama here is what naturally happens as two people try to navigate a world of dating with kids and busy schedules. It was definitely worth a read.

I wish ‘Against the Rush’ was longer as I feel the story jumps time quite a bit and because of that I feel like important talks happen off page. I enjoyed Jalen and Leif. Thea, Leif’s daughter, was a great character and actually written like a proper child, tantrums and all. I really enjoyed the mother of Leif’s daughter and appreciated how she was written as the opposite seems to be the norm and isn’t always necessary. It’s a sweetness overload, low angst story between 2 men who experience an instant connection. While I did enjoy the book there was something of a disconnect for me and I can’t really put my finger on why.

I enjoyed these authors rugby series, so I was very interested to see how they approach hockey- which is my favorite. First, I like the premise of book, which is a bit of a twist from many hockey mm romances I’ve read. Jalen is so good with the kids he coaches for his youth hockey. Leif plays for the affiliated professional team, he is also the father of one of Jalens’s players. I really like this couple, they are good people and fit well together. I’m not a big fan of kids in romance books and for me, there was way too much page time for Thea. But, I really enjoyed the rest of the book, the couple, the side characters, the team dynamics, and the writing is all well done.
