All I Got Was The Headache (An Amelia Fantastica Misadventure Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 399 ratings

Maxine “Maxie” Peterson had just turned eighteen and life was looking good when a fairy godmother she didn’t know existed, one Amelia Pomeroy Fitzgerald Fantastica, abruptly dropped into her life. Literally. Life, for Maxie, has never been the same since.Amelia has rotten taste in clothes, a fondness for single malt scotch, and an annoying penchant for meddling where she’s not wanted. As far as Maxie’s concerned, her fairy godmother’s “assistance” isn’t wanted anywhere, at any time, for any reason whatsoever. Unfortunately for Maxie, when it comes to heeding hints (not to mention demands and outright threats), Amelia has the hide of a rhinoceros—nothing gets through!Maxie is the owner and sole employee of Maxie Peterson Investigations. When she discovers her newest, richest, and (sadly) only client dead on her office floor with her letter opener through his heart, she isn’t surprised to find Amelia’s already on the job—Amelia can always be counted on to be in the middle of things, making them worse. What Maxie isn’t prepared for is the hunky new detective in charge of the case. Ben Trueblood is as hard-nosed as Maxie, and just as determined to find the killer, but he’s got a major advantage—he doesn’t have a fairy godmother making a mess of everything before he even gets started!

Balked of her dream of becoming Captain JANE Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, Anne kept writing while wandering through a variety of careers as engineer, diplomat, planner, and public relations specialist. Writing isn't nearly as exciting, adventurous, or sexy as commanding a starship, but it's still a challenge and, on the days when it goes well, a heck of a lot of fun. (She tries not to think about the days when it doesn't go well!) The only real problem is that, given the number of story ideas banging around in her head, Anne's either going to have to write a whole lot faster or live a whole lot longer if she's going to get all those stories written before she dies!

Ok, I read a lot and am a self-admitted literature snob. I love a really well-written book with well-developed characters....Sue Grafton, Lawrence Sanders, G. A. McKevett. This book really surprised me. It came across as a free read and I didn't grab it at first. After I did and finally took the time to read it, I was really surprised. I really loved it! The characters are pretty well-developed, as is the story line. The book has a really good mystery that had me guessing until the end. I love a writer who interjects humor and humorous, eclectic supporting characters. This story does that well. Maxie is a late 20s, single gal who was a police officer for a few years, then broke out and got her private investigator's license. One morning she walks in her office and finds her first appointment of the morning lying dead in her locked office with her envelope opener stuck right through his heart. She doesn't completely trust the sexy Detective Trueblood to find the killer before she is arrested for the murder, so takes matters into her own hands. While all this is happening, her fellow office building tenants have collected money in an office pool to see what date and time she will be arrested for the murder. Being a good sport, she participates, which is a hilarious side story. I have already downloaded the next in the series, and can't wait to see what the author does to develop Maxie's character and her flirty relationship with the studly Detective Trueblood.

This was really cute and I would have loved it (and given it 5 stars) but for one thing— Amelia. She was one hundred percent annoying and not in a good or funny way. At first I couldn’t understand why Maxie disliked her Fairy Godmother, because someone nobody can see could be very helpful in an investigation. And, while Maxie talked about how problematic Amelia was, we didn’t really see it in the beginning. Once she started up though, I wanted to smack her upside the head myself. I know we are supposed to commiserate with the protagonist (Maxie), but all I could think about was how stupid a character Amelia was. She was written way over the top. Looking past the fact that she’s fairly incompetent at spell casting (that could have been funny on it’s own), she’s completely clueless about situations and treats Maxie horribly. For example, Amelia always talks to her and asks her questions when other people are around and she obviously can’t answer without looking like a lunatic. Anyway, she frustrated the heck out of me. Less would have been more where Amelia was concerned, in my opinion.

All that said, Maxie is a pretty great character. I love her personality, her sass and her attitude. The dialog is well written and entertaining, especially the banter between her and Detective Trueblood. The mystery itself is solid. If you can look past the super annoying Amelia and the frustrating situations she puts Maxie in, I definitely recommend it. (My opinion of Amelia might not be shared by all.) I think I will eventually try the next in the series. Even though they aren’t listed on GR, there are apparently 2 more in the series (per Amazon and the author’s note at the end of the book).

The story, for me, was...okay...not terrible, not great...okay. The characters are likeable enough, but I found the pace slow moving. I was 2/3 thru before my interest really piqued. The guilty party and story resolution were not by any means thrilling, but they were satisfying. A lot of unnecessary background stuff in the book, I thought, but perhaps that stuff will come into play in the other books in the series. Will I read more? Maybe, maybe not...but not immediately, in any case.

Readers of Janet Evanovich will probably enjoy this. It has a reasonable mystery plot, decent characters, the humor isn't forced, a pleasant read overall. I don't need to read the whole series but I don't regret reading this one.

Do you ever wish you could get off the merry go round. Just to stop the
Insanity. Now intensifie that with a crazy faerie godmother slowly driving
you there. That's how Pettersons life is going. A fun and crazy fast action
Mystery, with lots of twists & turns. A hialious and crazy fun mystery with
lots of great characters. It's a hit out of the ballpark book. Oh and you won't
figure it out till the end either.

Fun read. Enough twists and turns to not be sure who the murderer is. A SMART investigator who doesn’t do the stupid stuff seen so often. And a nice, gentle SMART detective who’s good looking, sweet, and respectful. Loki g forward to the next book.

I usually avoid mysteries with an even slightly supernatural bent, since I figure Charlaine Harris tied up those threads front, back, and center, but I decided to give this book a whirl, and I'm glad I did. (Speaking of threads, there were dozens left dangling throughout the plot, interesting half-explained tidbits that make one hungry for the next book in the series, hoping that there will be some explanation of all these hints.) There were plenty of twists to the mystery, and the story was constantly amusing. It was also exceptionally well-written and edited. The book did commit the cardinal sin of the "hot detective", a plot device that should have died a sorry death and been decently buried long ago, but it was handled a bit better than usual. All in all, a very enjoyable book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fairy Godmother - oh! Hell!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2019
A terrific read -fast paced and action packed plot that will have you wondering who the killer is until the last few pages. A wonderful humorous look at a Fairy Godmother who is more of a liability rather than the stuff of fairytale. Botched spells lead our heroine a merry dance as she tries to unravel who killed her new client and why? Is it anything to do with his love life? Or is it because all of a sudden he has gotten a conscience about the possible illegal activities of his business empire? Watch as she tries to step through the minefield that are his wives and lovers. All hungry piranhas for the money he represented. Whilst her meeting with his eldest daughter has her reeling. The only good thing she can say about the whole thing is that she meet a handsome detective (who seemed to have her in his sights). Will she unravel the murder? Great characters that range from the ditsy to the enigmatic. Their banter is a pleasure to read and devour.

Sometimes a bit hard to work out who "dunnit" but it finally sorts out.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommend you read it.
