- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2009Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis year I have been reading just about anything paranormal that I can get my hands on. Kenyon, Frost, Harris, C.L Wilson, Ward... pretty much read it all. I stumbled across Melanie Nowak thanks to the Amazon message boards and the reviews from other helpful readers. I gave her Kindle bundle a go because the sample sucked me in, and I was instantly addicted. I can honestly say that it made me look FORWARD to 3 a.m. feedings with my newborn because I couldn't wait to get back into the story. It kept me up worrying and wondering what the characters would do next, and I thought about it long after I read the last page. It had me in knots at times, and smiling like an idiot at other times.
I loved the series because it took the vampire/human girl story line in a completely original direction. The characters were three-dimensional, believable, the dialogue flowed naturally, and no one fell in the clearly defined box of black or white, good or evil. Characters that I liked in the beginning I didn't care for as I got to know them, and the one that I thought was clearly the villain became if not likeable, then at least understandable by the end. For me, a really great book will make you feel what the characters are feeling, and this series has that in spades. Felicity is a young college student, naive, gullible at times but not stupid, courageous, beautiful, likeable, and I was really rooting for her to wind up with the right guy. When I started the first book I had no idea there would be a love triangle, and it actually caught me off guard, but that wound up being one of my favorite aspects of the series. THe fact that the author set us up and we didn't even see it coming.
While this book does have exciting moments and action, it is not constantly speeding ahead to the next dramatic scene so you can't ever catch your breath. There are quiet moments where it becomes much more of a character study and I really liked that about it. I felt included in the relationships, friendships as well as lovers, and it caused me to be more invested in the story.
This is a fantastic series that stands in a class of its own. It's not the typical love story where you find out who the hero/heroine are in the first chapter and then watch them go through the pre-determined number of obstacles before they get their happily ever after, but the ending still had me giddy. And the best part is that it's not over yet, this is just the first installment. Get invested in the world Melanie Nowak has created, you will not regret it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2009Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst let me say that I am a huge Twilight fan and ever since I read the Twilight Series I have been hooked on reading books pertaining to paranormal romance. Although I wouldn't consider myself a pro at reviewing and commenting on books, I do consider myself capable of sharing my own opinions having already read over 20 paranormal romance novels within this month alone. What can I say; I'm a fast reader. I don't normally leave comments on the books that I've read (just never had the desire to, unfortunately), however I do believe that Melanie Nowak, being a newly published author, deserves the commentary on her works. In my opinion, and it's just my opinion, she actually did a great job of filling in all the details that are normally lacking in other works. After reading all 3 novels, I felt a great sense of satisfaction and although I am looking forward to the continuation of the trilogy in her 4th novel, I wasn't left with a whole bunch of questions in my head about the history of the main characters and why certain situations led to another. Melanie wrote her novels with just the right amount of details and explanations to keep the reader enthralled and sated, from chapter to chapter.
In my opinion, Melanie wrote these novels better than Stephenie Meyers' Twilight because she successfully integrated her stories between both the main characters' point of views. Twilight was somewhat frustrating because I would have really been interested in knowing the story from Edward Cullen's point of view, with him being the other main character that is a constant throughout the entire trilogy. In Melanie's novels, she was able to give us Felicity's human perspective as well as Cain's vampiric point of view. Although, some parts of the book may have given a little too much description and detail as to past situations that made it feel somewhat repetitive and a little drawn out when either Cain or Felicity's pondering seemed to take forever to conclude (but then again, maybe that's just my opinion because of my own anxious anticipation for each conclusion), overall it was a good meld to keep readers informed and/or riveted to give the story a good flow.
Whereas some books made me feel like I just wasted my time, Melanie Nowak's Almost Human trilogy is definitely a worthwhile read. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their reading experience from all the "Twilightish" YA novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Human 1st Trilogy
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI was given a Kindle from my husband this Christmas, and the 1st Trilogy (Almost Famous - all in 1) was the first kindle book I bought. I had never heard of Melanie Nowak before, and now I am addicted! The first trilogy really captured all of the excitment and danger around a girls first love! The story was very well written and what I especially like was how you got see thing from different perspectives, as if you could get into the minds of the characters.
I have now finished the 3 books in the first trilogy and I thoroughly enjoyed them! I would recommend them to anyone, the read itself is entertaining with a full range of emotions! I am now almost finished the 1st book in the 2nd trilogy (Born to Blood) of the series, and I am starting to panic as the 2nd book in the second trilogy (Descent of Darkness) is not yet available for purchase... How am I going to cope. Melanie, if I could be so bold, please write faster! In all seriousness, thank you for the amazing books, I wish you all the success you deserve, and I cannot wait to read the next installment of the series!
P.S. The second series is every bit as good and entertaining as the first! I love the route the story is developing on, and I cannot wait to pick up the books to become immersed in the fantastic and mystical world of Cain, Felicity, Allie and Mattie and the rest crew when I get home!

Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book started somewhat slow for me and I was ready to put it down but I'm so glad that I didn't. I have to say I was completely surprised at all the different types of people, places, and issues that are in this book. I love the world that has been created and can not wait to read more.
