- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2012This is a very strong collection of short stories. All 10 stories are well written and have some kind of twist or surprise in store for readers. I normally don't read short stories but I've had the privilege of reading some of Bainbridge-Cowan's pre-released work and have very much enjoyed her writing style. She never disappoints.
This book is no exception. From the very first story I was hooked. I never knew what was going to be lurking around the next page. A couple of the stories I had to re-read because I was so involved in the story that the ending took me completely by surprise and I had to read back to make sure I got the entire plot correct. It was like reading 20 stories instead of 10 there was so much going on.
I completely loved this book. It was fast paced and held so much to keep my attention I just couldn't put it down. Bainbridge-Cowan is an excellent writer and I encourage anyone to get this book or any other that she has put out. You will be surprised, awed and fall in love with her characters just as I did.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2013Pam Bainbridge-Cowan penned this collection of short stories that piqued my interest. While I liked some and some eluded me altogether I did find them not only altered visions but interesting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2012Pam Bainbridge-Cowan offers up some great spec-fic in her ten story collection, Altered Visions. Her prose is sharp, witty, gritty and at times uplifting. If you're a fan of of sci-fi, horror or fantasy, you'll find something you like in Altered Visions. I found the story, The Other Woman (also included in the NIWA 2011 Spec-Fic Anthology: Magic to Mayhem), to be a truly gripping original work of modern day horror. Pick up a copy today and alter the way you see the world!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2014What exactly is speculative fiction? I had never heard the term until I read this author. Speculative fiction is a "umbrella term encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres.' What does that mean, exactly? Anyway I am a avid reader of short stories/novellas due to doing most of my reading in 30 minute spurts on the commute to and from work. This author's stories never failed to keep me interested, the last story got kind of long winded for me but still paid off in the end. A lot of the stories were about strong and/or conniving women and I think very view people have heard of ice worms, that are mentioned in this book. If you like speculative fiction, I recommend you get this book, it is a quick read and will keep you interested, for sure.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2012Bainbridge-Cowan is solid writer with the ability to transport a reader into her world. Her writing is just gritty enough to provide an authentic feel, yet there's silver lining of humanity to it that speaks of the unsinkable nature of the human sole.
