Angel of Shadow: Wormwood Trilogy, Book 2 Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

D.H. Nevins hurtles you into a world of half-angels, demons and tormented love in this driving, dystopian sequel to Wormwood.
(Although this is a sequel to Wormwood, Angel of Shadow can easily be read as a stand-alone.)

Half-angels, known as Nephilim, have eradicated almost all of humanity. Yet for Kali Michaels, her life is much more complicated than simply surviving. Grappling with her own powerful identity, she worries her connection to the world of Shadows could destroy those around her.

And what if she hurts Tiamat Wormwood, the Nephilim outcast who had defied his orders and given everything to save her? He would die for her, yet somehow, she is slowly killing him.

Locked in battle, both the humans and the Nephilim are on the brink of extinction. As Kali fights to stop the inevitable, she questions who her real enemies are... and whether SHE may actually be the ultimate threat.

"I am in love with this world that D.H. Nevins has created. Fast paced, action packed, and a smoldering romance all in the aftermath of an apocalyptic world. Angels and Demons presented in a unique and totally fresh way. Possibly my favorite fantasy series of the year." - Reader review

"
Nevins should be at the top of the New York Times Best-sellers list with this series. Superb editing, a tightly woven, fast-paced storyline with all the feels, and an epic battle between good and evil. I was enthralled with Kali and Tiamat. The tension between them quivered off the pages.
If you're a Cassandra Clare Mortal Instruments fan, you'll love this one."

Losing sleep was never so much fun. A LOT happens in the sequel to Wormwood, but let me just say that Kali and Tiamat make me CRAZY! So many times I wanted to grab them by the shoulders and shake them, and tell them they need to sit down and make an agreement and stick to it. At the same time, when you've had your wings cut off and have returned from death (Tiamat) and when you've learned your real father is a demon (Kali) and you have a demon side -- which you are then forced to awaken to stay alive -- you're bound to have some issues. So I can cut them some slack on that account, ha ha. I loved this book just as much as the first. The writing is so active and pacey that even when the angels are just standing around talking or Kali is brooding I felt engaged and kept turning pages. I like all their issues and angst. And the creepy shadow things were described so well I could practically feel it! Eeek!! Can't wait to read the next book.

I was eagerly awaiting this second book after falling in love with Tiament and Kali in the first and was not disappointed. I am in love with this world that D.H. Nevins has created. Fast paced, action packed, and a smoldering romance all in the aftermath of an apocalyptic world. Angels and Demons presented in a unique and totally fresh way. Possibly my favorite fantasy series of the year. Eagerly awaiting the last book in this trilogy.

As I continue the journey of Taimat and Kali, the struggle between humanity and evil is very real!!! Kali's inner battle is epic! And, of course who can forget Richard....we all have daddy issues....but he is a world all his own. The writing flows so well. You will miss sleep with this second installment.

    Characters
I mentioned in the review for book one that I did not feel as though I knew Kali as well as I should after finishing a book. I connected with her more during book two and I understood her motivations and thoughts. Kali goes through some changes and I found it really interesting to follow her struggle and self doubt. There was a point near the end that bothered me, when Kali seemed to take her time to really get involved, but overall I thought she was a well developed character.

I’m not sure why I did not mention Richard in my review for book one. He is definitely coming out as one of my favourite characters in this series. He seems perfectly deceptive and manipulative. He is exactly what I would expect from a menacing demon and I enjoy the encounters with him (does that make me evil?).

Different characters are introduced and I found most of them to be interesting and well developed. There was one that did not feel quite right during the book but it was explained later and her reactions to situations made a lot more sense.

    Plot
This book follows a similar slow pace as the first one, with the majority of the story taking place over a few days. I enjoyed the pace and I thought it allowed the reader the opportunity to really get involved in what Kali was experiencing.

Similar to book one, there are things that happen in this book that do not seem to quite add up as you read through the chapters, but it all makes sense by the end. I was actually quite surprised by some of the explanations and I really enjoy it when plots are not predictable.

There was one aspect of the plot that seemed repetitive and I struggled to understand why the characters did not grasp the situation and continued to make the same mistakes. An explanation was provided but I do not think it was enough.

    World
There were some interesting changes to the world that I cannot mention without giving away spoilers. I also felt as though the use of shadows was unique and clever.

I found myself a little lost with the description of some of the caves and I do not think I pictured the area correctly. This bothered and confused me slightly but only for about one chapter.

    Writing
I found a few tiny errors and some of the descriptions and explanations were a bit repetitive, but most of the book is really well written and an easy read. I think this is a great achievement for a new author.

Just like book one, book two is difficult to put down, especially if you like stopping at the end of a chapter. You are often left with a hint of what will happen next and it makes you want to keep going.

    Overall
This is another enjoyable book by D. H. Nevins, with interesting concepts and a well thought out storyline.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys dystopia or paranormal genres, but I would also recommend it to those who want an unpredictable read. I really liked the little surprises.

Fantastic sequel to Wormwood! I absolutely loved reading "Wormwood", the first book in this series and even read it twice so I could prepare myself for "Angel of Shadow". I thought Angel of Shadow was stunning and flowed beautifully from Wormwood. I was captured the entire time I was reading the book. To be honest, I don't usually read this genre but even so, I was hooked and ended each chapter with wanting to keep reading. This book has everything...adventure, love, mystery, etc. I loved how the relationship between Kali and Tiamat developed over time. Danielle Nevins is an outstanding writer and I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice YA for those who love supernatural romance and endless peril.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2018
I really enjoyed the problematic romance between Kali (Human) and Tiamat (Nephilim), as well as the seemingly impossible obstacles they are faced with. Love almost conquers all but it is not full proof and there is nothing like the end of the world, self-righteous Nephilim, scared people and wicked meddling demons, to throw a spanner in the works. Overall I personally missed a little more depth and variation in the read, but there is no denying that for true fans of romance, this story hits the bullseye dead centre. For me, the characters' emotions were beautifully explored, however, the best twist of this story is definitely the unpredictable workings of the Shadows! I am now looking forward to seeing how the story will carry on book #3.
