About the author

Tahir Shah was born in London, and raised primarily at the family’s home, Langton House, in the English countryside – where founder of the Boy Scouts, Lord Baden Powell, was also brought up.
Along with his twin and elder sisters, Tahir was continually coaxed to regard the world around him through Oriental eyes. This included being exposed from early childhood to Eastern stories, and to the back-to-front humour of the wise fool, Nasrudin.
Having studied at a leading public school, Bryanston, Tahir took a degree in International Relations, his particular interest being in African dictatorships of the mid-1980s. His research in this area led him to travel alone through a wide number of failing African states, including Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Zaire.
After university, Tahir embarked on a plethora of widespread travels through the Indian subcontinent, Latin America, and Africa, drawing them together in his first travelogue, BEYOND THE DEVIL'S TEETH. In the years that followed, he published more than a dozen works of travel. These quests – for lost cities, treasure, Indian magic, and for the secrets of the so-called Birdmen of Peru – led to what is surely one of the most extraordinary bodies of travel work ever published.
In the early 2000s, with two small children, Tahir moved his young family from an apartment in London’s East End to a supposedly haunted mansion in the middle of a Casablanca shantytown. The tale of the adventure was published in his bestselling book, THE CALIPH'S HOUSE.
In recent years, Tahir Shah has released a cornucopia of work, embracing travel, fiction, and literary criticism. He has also made documentaries for National Geographic TV and the History Channel, and published hundreds of articles in leading magazines, newspapers, and journals. His oeuvre is regarded as exceptionally original and, as an author, he is considered as a champion of the new face of publishing.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020Of the anthologies that Tahir Shah has published, I selected "Childhood" as the first to read because I've had a glimpse into his childhood in some of his other books, and the picture he paints of his youth has always made me a little envious. Sadly, my mother died when I was three and a half years old, and that sort of thing forces one to grow up rather quickly, without much "magic" or happiness in the mix. Fortunately, stories were encouraged in my youth, and I believe, like Tahir Shah says in various ways in "Childhood," that stories are crucial for so many reasons, not least of which as blueprints for ways of living and thinking. Of course, the stories to which he refers are the Nasrudin stories. I didn't come across those until I started reading books authored by his father, Idries Shah, when I was in my early twenties. In "Childhood," Tahir Shah presents the material in such a way that I'm either reminded of a Nasrudin story, or I'm able to see a Nasrudin story in a new light. This is not to mention the pleasure of reading about a childhood so unlike my own. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I shall be purchasing another of Tahir Shah's anthologies ASAP.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2020Several days ago all 16 anthologies arrived and I didn't know how to choose which one to read first.
Then I thought that perhaps Childhood might be a logical beginning.
Also, I hoped to read more about the author's father, Idries Shah. And I did.
While I have read most of this in Tahir's previous books, this was an excellent review. Both because I did not remember what I had once read and usually I don't like rereading books, and also because in this new arrangement these pieces combined into a different picture, as it would be with Lego blocks.
The book is both entertaining and also teaching, in a subtle way. It shows new aspects of life which (although in plain sight) are otherwise invisible to most of us. Helps understand life and its purpose. Now I will read the remaining 15 anthologies, one by one, especially during the shutdown.
Speaking of which, I am looking forward to Book Two of his Jinn Hunter series. In book one he predicted the current catastrophe. His site says that the other books will be released soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022I liked best the little tidbit's he gave about situations where his dad taught him something because then I learned something. Thanks Tahir
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2020The continuing story of Tahir Shah is itself
chock-full of stories, and here in "Childhood,"
one of at least fourteen volumes comprising
"The Anthologies" he recollects and reflects upon
his own childhood, while retelling numerous
tales from the world of traditional teaching
stories. Previously-published and also new
material is included. All of it seems fresh;
and as with all of Shah's writing, thought-
provoking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Again and again I put his book down and feel refreshed. Thank you, Tahir.
Reading Tahir Shah always helps me to change position - to acquire a new lookout. This is a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars Regaining Childhood Abilities
This book has much wisdom to offer parents. It can also encourage them to compensate for the undervaluing of non-linear thinking by our educational system. For grown-ups of all ages it shows a way to regain the abilities we had in childhood, but which were suffocated by the world in which we live.
