Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ascension Point moves along at a crackling pace right to the last page, with plenty of believable action and intrigue. I was entertained, which is sometimes the highest compliment I can pay a book. I have no qualms in recommending this novel for pure entertainment value, and I wouldn't hesitate to pick up the next installment." - The Indiscriminate Critic Blog
"
Ascension Point holds its own against the mainstream science fiction market-it's well plotted, well-edited, and most of all, fun to read... There are some interesting twists Harris will surprise you with, but they fit seamlessly with the overall plot. I find that sometimes plot twists come from left field and have no connection to the story, but not so in this book. Everything fits neatly together. I can't wait to read the next installment, Venus Rising, when it comes out sometime this spring." - The Spidereen Frigate Blog

Ascension Point is science fiction in the "it's the future" sense of the genre, with the Seryn race, Harris mixes in a bit of fantasy. As I read through the novel, I felt more and more that it was a YA novel. Why? Luc, Neela, Abe, and Ariadne, make up the Chosen, representatives of their races to read the Book of Ascension and achieve enlightenment and immortality. Luc, Neela, and Abe aren't teenagers, Ariadne is, so what made it feel YA to me? Their character arcs--Luc, a Titan neophyte receives the results of his final test, mirroring a transition into manhood; Neela is a senator but she follows in the footsteps of her father, a politician, and "chas[es] a legend from her family's past" working, by the end of the novel, towards a different path; Abe, an outcast, seems young compared to the rest of the Collective and journey's towards finding his place in the universe. Ariadne, the only teenager, is filled with the mystical wisdom of the Seryn and dangerous discrimination of her people; her growth is minimal throughout the novel, though her youth is apparent in her wonder at the rest of the world.

Could Harris easily shift this to a YA novel? Yes. Should he? That's his call. I don't know much about traditional publishing, but if he were to pursue that path, I'd recommend a YA overhaul for a better chance at success.

While I read, Harris's use of humor throughout the novel reminded me of Douglas Adam's "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Not only did Ascension Point bring out genuine laughter in me, but the plot, though epic in nature, was handled in a light and refreshing way, similar to that of Hitchhiker's. I was able to tear through Ascension Point rather quickly and didn't have to spend hours wondering when the climax would finally arrive.

I always have an eye on the writing of the books I read and I have no qualms abandoning a book for grammar that makes my head spin, but Harris pulled me in and kept me. He can grow, as all writers can, but the mistakes he made were minimal and the types I'd suspect from a new author. While Indie books can get the bad rap of poor editing, I don't think this is the case for Harris's novel. I've abandoned more traditionally published books for their poor editing than Harris made mistakes in his novel.

First and foremost: if you're not familiar with science fiction writing, this isn't the book to start with. Genre terms come at you hard and fast with no learning curve. So, if you're just diving in to the genre, work your way up to this one.

That said, this is an excellent read. I found it a tad slow at the beginning, but by the end I was completely hooked. Very well written (and well edited, with zero formatting problems in the e-edition that I noticed)! The characters are all dimensional--Harris makes you care about each of them. The plot is fast-paced with some great twists. I think my favorite thing about this book was that the aliens our heroes encountered were not humanoid. Don't get me wrong, I love a good humanoid alien, but I think because this was a debut, self-published novel, I was a little scared that all the aliens would be...uninteresting. I was very wrong, and couldn't be happier about it.

    I definitely recommend this one.

Seldom recently have I been so impressed by an ebook. Most tend towards poor editing, loose plotting and weak characters. While maybe not perfect 'Ascension Point' suffers from none of those and is quite the ride!

Each of the GRIN technologies (Genetic, Robotic, Informational, Nano(here Psionic)) has its own racial interpretation and watching them play out is a wild and quite fun time.

The overall plot and storyline is nothing shockingly new, but the characters playing to their strengths is quite well done and I eagerly await the coming sequel(s).
Dan Harris may well join the great names of SF if he keeps working at this quality.

I read Ascension Point pretty much straight through over a couple of days (during labor and delivery of my second child - in the gaps between my wife's contractions!), and enjoyed it very much. There's an interesting mix of characters - there are four different races who each approach the world with preconceived ideas about each other, and who are then forced together to take part in a quest, all leading up to a big finish.

I knocked off one star because it felt like the quest part (the middle chapters) moved a bit too quickly from task 1 to task 2 to task 3 (for me), which left me slightly confused as to what they were doing and why. However this was a minor point and I thought the concepts behind the characters, the interplay between them, and particularly the events around the end of the book were really well written and powerful.

    I'd definitely recommend this.

I rarely rate books and even more rarely give 5 stars; however this one is worth it. It is well wrutten, captivating, and has good character development. It has action, depth, and even a little sadness within the story.

Try it and I felt you will enjoy it!

Highly recommend this book! It's a great escape into an exciting and wondrous future world with enough basis in reality to be believable. 5.0 out of 5 stars Good book. Looking forward to a sequel.

For a first novel, this book really stands out. If I had to describe it in terms of another writer, I'd probably say something like a more "family friendly" Peter F Hamilton. From my point of view, this isn't Sci Fi in the Arthur C Clarke sense, where the point of the book is the technology it describes, but more as a backdrop for story telling. Harris throws in plenty of technologies, but I got the feeling he wasn't particularly interested in exploring or explaining them.

The story itself was a good read. I found it difficult to put the book down after the first few chapters, and by the end was desperate to find out how it would finish. For me though, what made it stand out from the crowd was the dialogue and character development. The more Sci Fi I read, the more I find the dialogue grates on me and the characters feel two dimensional. In this book though, the characters are interesting and the dialogue always rang true.

If there was any downside it would be that maybe Harris filled his universe a little more than was necessary for this book. As another reviewer pointed out, that might hint at a sequel, so from my point of view maybe not such a downside after all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining debut novel

Ascension Point is a thoroughly enjoyable and well-written book. The plot is absorbing if not particularly remarkable - it brings together four extremely different characters, sends them on an adventure to save the universe and then ties up the loose ends neatly at the end - nothing ground-breaking but certainly good fun.

Where this book really excels, however, is in the style of the prose and the characters that it creates. Harris's words flow easily and build a believable fantasy world populated by people that I liked and that all stood apart from each other as fully-developed individuals - that goes for the machines as much as the humans! His use of technology, casually dropping terms into the narrative without explaining them, worked very well to create a sense of future and his evocative descriptions of people and places all helped to pull together a clear and convincing mental picture of the galaxy he described.

As a pedantic reader I was pleased to find that Harris is extremely precise with his grammar and consistent with his characters and his use of terms, giving the whole book a very polished feel that I would not necessarily have expected from a first-time indie book.

Overall, I'm very glad that I gave this a go and will certainly look out for more of Harris's work in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, well-written, engaging read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's classic sci-fi with a far-future version of humanity made up of contrasting factions pulled into a galaxy-spanning quest to save, well, everything.
While the quest-based plot itself is relatively straightforward, it's in the writing and characters that this book really shines. The characters are well-rounded, with distinct voices, backgrounds, and personalities, and they're often very funny too. The writing is easy reading, flows well, and keeps the reader engrossed - impressive for a first novel.
The world Harris builds is a varied and interesting one, and I look forward to reading the subsequent books in the Unity series to see what other stories he has crafted there. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ascension Point - Wow!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 21, 2012

We find ourselves in a brave new world where 4 very different characters are brought together quite deliberately to fight a mysterious and unknown enemy to save the future of mankind. They are natural enemies, suspicious of each other, and are not only in conflict with each other but have demons of their own to fight. The relationships between them unfold gently and subtly. Harris uses words carefully - there is no gushing of sentimentality but sentiment and pathos is very apparent, as is the sexual tension. There is much to cry about but also lots of wry humour. The descriptions of the travels through space are literally out of this world!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting new universe with believable characters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 13, 2018

Harris takes an interesting concept (what are all the ways humanity could evolve?) and wraps an adventure story around it (save the galaxy!) to make a very enjoyable read. The first book in any new universe needs to do a lot of work to set things up, but Ascension Point smoothly introduces new concepts, terminology and politics without diverting the narrative. I particularly enjoyed the shifting first-person perspective, which allowed plenty of space for all the characters to develop.
