Asking For a Friend Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 281 ratings

Lando writes about romance for a living yet shuns it in his life.
After too many failed relationships, Lando Hardwick has enough. No more dates for him. His taste in men is abysmal. He always falls for the ones who are only looking for fun.
Hesketh Trent has stopped searching for a boyfriend. They only see him as a walking cash machine, only care what he can buy them. What has happened to romance, love?
Getting soaked by scalding coffee is the worst way to start the day, but hell’s bells, the man is divine. Even though the man ticks all his boxes, no way is Lando giving him his phone number. He’ll be like all the rest: one hot night and he kicks him out the door.
But Hesketh doesn’t give up so easily. The cute redhead with no brain-to-mouth filter intrigues him as no man has ever done.
A cat and mouse chase is on, with Lando as the mouse. Once Lando is caught, they can’t stay away from one another.
Until Hesketh makes a mistake.
Thank god for mutual friends who won’t give up on them and push them together when they’re both too stubborn to take the next step.
Asking For a Friend is a stand-alone MM novel with a group of sassy men, a larger-than-life ginger cat called Flanaghan, a stubborn writer, and a man who can plan events but not his own life.

You will normally find JJ in the living room—typing away—with her dog, Siddiqi. As a hopeless romantic, she dives into her stories, always falling in love with her men, making sure they get the happy ever after they deserve, even if they do have to work hard for it.

As a bona fide bookaholic, a wine-drinking and swear-like-a-sailor type of girl, she has yet to work out how to act her age!! LOL. And she has no intentions of growing up or growing old gracefully.

JJ lives in a small, very quiet, village in Lincolnshire, UK, with her husband and dog, and spends all day dreaming up stories full of really hot men.

This is a MAGNIFICENT story. Lando a successful romance writer is settled into his life and career. Hesketh is a business man and event planner. A chance meeting will set Hesketh on a determination quest that will be fulfilled when Lando says yes. JJ HARPER gives these two the leeway to make mistakes. I enjoyed these men very much. They didn't have all the answers but they were willing to find them. GREAT BOOK!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!

I was undecided over 3 or 4 stars but went with 4 . I've never read JJ Harper's work and enjoyed the story and laughed out loud a few times hence the 4 stars. I started out loving Lando and Hesketh . Lando's inability to keep his thoughts to himself and Hesketh's willingness to take things slow was the start of an amazing story but after a while their miscommunication dragged on a little too long. They were such a sweet couple both cautious due to past relationships and family issues but were finding their way. To get so entangled in misunderstandings for such a long period when it could have possibly been resolved with one conversation wasn't very relatable to me, but I love an HEA and this didn't disappoint on that front.

I absolutely fell in love with this book and these characters. That being said, I still wanted to throttle both Lando and Hesketh several times during the second half of this book. It was all worth it in the end though.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

While Lando is said to just blurt things out, he doesn't do well at giving Hesketh a chance. A chance at a date or a chance to explain.

Lando and Hesketh is a sweet love story. They both had to work for it. Lando has a history of choosing the wrong guys. He's been disappointed so much he's sworn off dating. He's a romance author and has quite the following. He spends his days at the local coffee shop, writing. One day he turns around and bumps into Hesketh and has coffee splashed down the front of him.
Both of these guys have trouble in the dating department. Hesketh is intrigued and tries to impress Lando with small unique gifts and conversation. Hesketh knows cheating is a hard limit for Lando and how he's been disappointed. There's an incident where Hesketh agrees to go away for a writer's retreat with Lando and Lando is surprised and excited. Hesketh gets a call from his long lost brother and becomes so involved that he forgets about the weekend and doesn't call Lando. I found this very hard to believe. By this time, Hesketh has developed some real feelings for Lando. So has Lando but he's still unsure due to his insecurities. It's not in Hesketh's personality to forget such an important weekend and not let Lando know why he's didn't go. I won't go into more detail but things happen that were unlikely, in my opinion and don't ring true for me. I enjoy this author's writing and this was a miss for me that's why I gave this 3.5 stars. I received this free ARC and it didn't influence my review,

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb standalone
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 23, 2023
So a completely new standalone romance from J J Harper that was a deviation from her usual theme of books and a differing writing style from her norm.
This was a lovely story with a combination of different factors from some relationship angst, a little push and pull between the main characters, a lot of romance of course, and a smattering of side characters to round out a very well written story.
Lando & Hesketh were a dream made in heaven but Lando did make Hesketh work for his time, because, whilst Lando made a living from romance, he didn’t really have room for it in his life after making wrong choices, and being hurt in the process, this caused him to run from his feelings, and Hesketh had to really prove to him that he was actually interested in more and not just playing with his feelings. Now this did cause some angst and misunderstanding with the couple, however to understand Lando is to love him, a bit insecure and he was at times just waiting for the other shoe to drop, but Hesketh was tenacious and was not going to give up on him, or a relationship with him.
The dialogue ‘sparkles’ and is absolutely delightful, and the writing is so damn good I cannot give anything less than a 5 star ⭐️ rating and not knowing what to expect from this book, I was so happy that I enjoyed it as much as I did.
J J Harper never fails to deliver on a great story, an expert wordsmith and the story just flows from chapter to chapter, each one as exciting as the last.
So if you love J J then you definitely will adore this book and this absolutely wonderful couple, but if she’s a new to you author then give this one a chance because I think that you’ll very quickly wizzing through her backlog of equally wonderful books.
This has been added to the top of my file of favourite books ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars two stubborn men falling in love, what could go wrong?
Reviewed in Italy on April 23, 2023
Can you in equal measure love and want to smother two characters with a pillow? That’s how I feel about Lando and Hesketh. They are both as stubborn as each other and have erected barriers so high to protect themselves, at the first sign of trouble they flight and stay away instead of talking things through! Miscommunication, thy name is men, ugh, they’re so bad!
Ok, rant over! The book is actually really great. I loved the initial cat and mouse dynamic between them and I adored the great group of friends on both sides trying to knock sense into them and pushing them together.
JJ Harper really rocks writing emotions and steamy scenes!

MM, Hurt/Comfort, Second Chance, Contemporary, Romance. Easy to read stand-alone with a few cameo appearances, a page-turner with great characters, lots of emotion, and two main characters scared to get hurt again. A great read with a guaranteed HEA.
