Atonement (The Protectors, Book 6) Kindle Edition
Words twenty-six-year-old Dante Thorne has had to live with for more years than he can count and a title he finally earned at the tender age of sixteen when one careless decision led to tragedy. And since he can’t deny the truth of the words, why not live by them instead? Fucking up, fucking, it doesn’t matter; as long as it feels good and makes him forget the day he failed the one person he’d always sworn to protect. A good philosophy to live by until Dante meets the one man who might actually having him wishing he was something more…
At forty-one and with a distinguished career as a Texas Ranger under his belt, Magnus DuCane should have been in the prime of his life. Instead, he’s mourning the loss of the daughter he couldn’t save and contemplating a future that looks nothing like the one he had planned. The only bright spot in his life is the young grandson whose suddenly been returned to him after going missing two years earlier and the new family of men that he’s been welcomed into with open arms. But with his iron will, unfailing self-control and unflappable discipline, Magnus knows he can start a new chapter and get his life back on track…if he can just get past the disturbing, unexpected feelings one young man stirs in him.
Because everything about Dante Thorne is wrong for Magnus. His arrogance, his cocky attitude, every single unfiltered word that falls unchecked out of his mouth and, of course, the fact that he’s a man.
But when his well-meaning friends send Dante with him as a bodyguard when he returns to Texas to testify in a high-profile case, Magnus begins to see beyond the brash words and endless sexual innuendo. And when he starts to discover that what he sees isn’t all that bad, suddenly the fact that that Dante is a man instead of a woman no longer seems like such a big sticking point…
Can be read as a stand-alone story - no cliffhangers.
The Protectors series crosses over with some of my other series, so for the most enjoyment, they should be read in order, but it is not required. You can find the correct reading order at the beginning of each book. I've also bundled all my series in the correct reading order under the title of A Family Chosen: The Protectors and Barrettis.

About the author

Although Sloane Kennedy always dreamed of being a writer as a teenager, she didn't take the plunge until 2015 when she released her first novel. Since then, she has released nearly 30 books including the Amazon best-selling "Pelican Bay" and "Protectors" series. While she initially began writing M/F romance, she found her true passion writing gay romance and nearly all of her most recent releases reached the #1 spot on Amazon's Gay Romance bestseller list and several have made it to Amazon's overall bestseller list. Sloane was born in Germany but grew up in the U.S. and although she currently lives in Wisconsin, the place where she has always felt most at home is Seattle and many of her books take place in the Emerald city. When not writing, a menagerie of 2 dogs, 3 cats and 2 horses takes up what little time she has left in the day!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2017So I downloaded this book as soon as I saw it was available and binge read it in one evening. All I can say is "OMG". I think this is one of my top Sloane Kennedy books. Sloane Kennedy is an immediate download for me and I will drop what I'm doing to read her books. I loved the dialogue between Magnus and Dante, and I especially liked reading the internal mutterings of these two. Knowing what they were both going through and feeling my stomach flutter when there was hurt between the two, especially when one realized they had unintentionally hurt the other. Magnus was loving, romantic and very sensual considering this is his first time in a M/M relationship. But I think his maturity helped him come to terms with the fact he had it bad for another man, and Dante was that man. And Dante.....poor, broken Dante. Both of these men so heartbroken due to past situations and when they start realizing that they need each other - it was beautiful to read. Both men feeling horrible guilt and trying to work through their issues while at the same time, wanting closeness with the other. This was a wonderful addition to the Protector series, which is one of my top 5 series ever. Sloane Kennedy has a magical way of spinning a story and each story keeps getting better and better. She is good at writing characters that are emotional, intelligent, broken with a determination to not be, and amazing, steamy scenes. She is one of the best M/M and M/M/M writers out there. The only thing I have to complain about is that the books aren't written fast enough because after reading a Sloane Kennedy book, I immediately want the next one! But, just like all the others who love Sloane Kennedy like I do, I wait patiently. Thanks for another wonderful, emotionally charged and sexy book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2018A return to the adventures of the Protectors, as they go underground hunting down abusers, child molesters, rapists, and pimps for those who cannot seek justice for themselves! What chilling, dark, and dangerous mission awaits us, here? ...Matty's grandfather is returning to Texas to sort out his affects and testify in a trial. And Dante is with him as a bodyguard. ...yay...
Alright, that's an unfair summary of the book, but similar to Forsaken and Vengeance, I was very underwhelmed by this book. A great deal of that was because of the lack of balance between the plot and the character development and the chemistry building in the relationship. Even the first two elements, I wasn't too unhappy with -- in the truly great books in the Protectors series, the plot is more or less a vehicle to keep the pages turning, and a backdrop to bring the characters closer together, and as a result, you intellectually follow the mysteries or the suspense of the plot, while you get emotionally invested in the characters growing as people and falling in love. And the plot here was actually fairly decent for the first two points -- the idea of moving Magnus back to Texas to pack his belongings, sell his house, and testify in a trial was excellent for showing and developing the character we were already accustomed to from his introduction in Retribution. You feel his grief, as he remembers his daughter and the pain he felt with her going missing and finally being proclaimed dead (and, as a bonus, it adds to the never seen character who mothered Matty, rather than leaving her as a nameless, faceless junkie) And getting Dante out of his comfort zone and into the very conservative, even hostile environment of rural Texas is a great way to show exactly who is hiding under the puerile, crass, brazen exterior.
The biggest problem came with their romance. That, unfortunately, was the biggest sticking point. Maybe it was the age-gap. Maybe it was their characters were so well established as antagonizing each other. Whatever it was, I just couldn't buy the chemistry between them -- like all of the Protectors novels and all of Sloane Kennedy's other works, it wasn't for lack of trying. I could definitely see Dante falling for someone with a lot of Magnus' qualities, and they spent enough time working together and talking... I just couldn't feel the spark. Even the extra mile put in towards the end, with the revelation of Dante's brother being found and a rescue mission being mounted -- while it was a good logical move, convincing Dante and the audience that Magnus was in for the long haul, it more had the effect of Magnus being a generic, good supportive boyfriend, rather than being Magnus.
In the end, this fell through for me, just due to a subjective problem -- the lack of the X-factor, if you will -- and not because of a lack of effort or skill on the author's behalf. What is good in this story is very, very good. And what is bad is just 'meh'. I still knew I would be back for more, and sure enough, the next book was there.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2017In Atonement, we get the story of Magnus, Matty’s not-so-old grandfather and Dante, the cocky bodyguard that was protecting Matty during Retribution. Magnus has only had relationships with a woman, that’s it. He’s never even thought about men in anyway sexual, until he meets Matty’s cocky bodyguard Dante. There is just something about the younger man that pulls Magnus. But, on multiple occasions, Magnus is witness to Dante’s cocky, care-free lifestyle and he knows that’s not for him. That’s not what he’s looking for in a relationship. So he resorts to indifference. When dealing with Dante’s attitude, he feigns indifference when forced to interact with him. Which turns out to be quite frequently as Dante is now assigned to be Magnus’s bodyguard for an upcoming very high profile case that he is the key witness for!
The sexual tension between these two is off the charts! Dante wants Magnus and Magnus wants Dante. But Dante believes that he never has a chance with the older man. But boy is he wrong!
But will secrets keep them apart? Or will they cause their budding love for each other to collapse? Dante doesn’t do relationships because he believes he doesn’t deserve that kind of commitment, that he doesn’t deserve that kind of love. But Magnus doesn’t do flings. He wants forever. And he believes that his forever is Dante. Can Magnus break through the walls that Dante has built? He’s definitely willing to give it a try. Dante’s biggest secret is Aleks. Can Magnus still want to be with Dante after he learns the truth about Aleks? Can Dante forgive himself? These are all amazingly poignant questions that these two face in Atonement.
Once again, Sloane delivers and off the charts must have book for me. If you are a fan of Sloan, and you haven’t already purchased a copy of Atonement, I highly recommend you one-click this book right away. If you are new to Sloane, I definitely recommend you read Atonement, but you would probably want to start with Absolution, book one in The Protectors series. Absolution is M/M/M between Cole, Jonas, and Mace. You do not need to read the entire series in order to read Atonement, but the characters from previous books are in the following books. They are a continuing storyline where each book focuses on a particular couple or trio. Definitely get hooked on Sloane’s stories soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars There should be more then 5 Stars
This book is another great one by this author.
I cried, a lot.
I cursed, I yelled.
I cried some more. I always cry when I read one of Sloane Kennedy's books. She always makes me cry.
And Oh my god, I love it! Readers are twisted like that.
I love Sloane Kennedy's Books, that's for sure.
If you liked the former books of the Protectors series, you will like this one too. Great Story.
It's probably possible to read Atonement as a stand alone, but reading the other books first will make it a lot easier for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot and Sweet
Dante is arrogant and always loving and leaving 'em as he feels he is not worthy of anything else until he starts to interact with Magnus. He tries to get a rise out of Magnus, but he does not fall for it.
Magnus has just been reunited with his five-year old Grandson after two long years of not knowing where he was, and he doesn't have time to play Dante 's games.
When Magnus has to go back to Texas to be a witness in a trial, Ronan and Memphis send Dante with him as his bodyguard.
Magnus has never been with a man before, but sparks fly between the two as he starts to peel the layers back on why Dante acts the way he does.
Magnus' grandson Marty is a big help in getting these two together and any many of the characters in previous Protectors books have cameos.
Great addition to the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER 5 STAR READ FOR ME!!
It is fantastic when you are going through a book funk to suddenly get one that completely takes you out of it, it chews you in and spits you out faster than a twister in Kansas!
Sloane Kennedy is an incredible writer and she nails every time delivering a completely, fresh, addictive, hot and page turner of a story. Fans of the Protectors series can finally celebrate the release of latest instalment and I know that they, like me would LOVE Dante and Magnus story.
One thing I love about Sloane's books is the ability to engage the reader from the very first page, she makes sure she has you right where she wants you and you are completely lost in the story, you know the whole, hook, line and sinker and that wasn't the exception with this book.
Dante is, what can I say, in a compromising situation when Magnus walks in on him, Dante has tried constantly to push Magnus buttons, ever since their first meeting, if you can recall, Magnus is little Matty's grandfather, but don't let the word grandpa put you off, Magnus is off the charts HOT and Dante is desperate to get more and more under his skin, well and under other parts of him too, however the more Dante pushes, the more Magnus repels, its like watching two similar pole magnets at work, its poetic, I love that constant guessing, will they, wont they and OMG Sloane had me at every turn. For the first time since Dante started this "dance" around Magnus he sees a new reaction and urges him to keep driving the man insane but Magnus again only treats him with disdain and aggravation.
At 41 years old, Magnus has had his fair share of tragedy in his life and has seen horrific things in his line of work as a Texas Ranger( see what I mean about hot LOL), but after the loss of his only daughter he thought his life was over, finding his grandson, Matty has giving him purpose and he has managed to put his affairs in order and his life back on track, but an upcoming trial makes him an easy target putting his life in peril and in need of protection.
At 26 Dante is happy to shag everything that moves, women, men, the gender is not important as long as he has someone who can help him forget the mistakes of his past. One mistake cost him the loss of the one person he had only loved and who had only loved him in turn, the responsibility of his actions hasn't allowed him to move forward and to ever let go, he still searches and is still holding on to hope. Working in the "security" business has given him certain purpose and he has found friends who appreciate him and his job. A job that has now placed him directly working for the one person that brings the worst in him and who he can't stop thinking about. Dante is in charge of protecting non other than Magnus.
As the two men spend more time in each others company, they start learning about their pasts, their mistakes, their losses and slowly it's like they are seeing each other for the first time, and Sloane gives us the perfect interlude between this wonderful characters.
I loved every second, I felt every word. I went on a journey with Dante and Magnus and as with every beginning, there must be an end. It was compelling, heartfelt with just the right amount of passion where the poles finally are aligned the right way.
5 MAGNETIC STARS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series, another good story
I've read all of Sloane Kennedy books and I loved and adored the protector series, I'd been eagerly awaiting the release of this newest book. Wasn't disappointed and it was worth the wait. Can't wait for the next two new releases either. They look to be very good. So glad she's writing this series, all of it has been great reads.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book, I love this series.
4.5 Stars for this is a great book.
The story took off on a different direction at the start to what I was expecting. I mean, there where no guns blasting at the start with Magnus protections. The book starts of with Dante lusting after Magnus DuCane after they'd met in the hospital while he was protecting his grandson months ago. Magnus very much gave of the straight vibe or dislike towards Dante. When Dante's bosses inform him he's got a new assignment to be a bodyguard to a client/witness before he goes to court trail..
The client is Magnus ooh sparks fly all right, they both get hot under the collar (in more ways than one ;)
Magnus was feeling something but he's confused and questioning things. Magnus was a Ranger and helping the Feds stop a drug running into the country when things get complicated ending with a 16 yr girl. Emotions follow for Magnus and Dante as the court date looms closer.
I loved the ending, but who was Vaughn?.. I'll look forward to the next book in this wonderful series.
