Audio Assault (Codename: Winger Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 26 ratings

Theo Reese is just like any other seventeen-year-old—with one small exception.

This summer all he wants is to spend time with his boyfriend, Eddie, and work on his MIT research project. His parents have other plans.

An old friend needs the help of Theo’s family. Oliver Glenwood is an ’80s music star who runs his own label. His wife and his daughter, Sofia, now a chart-topper herself, are the targets of kidnappers. Oliver hopes they can eliminate whoever is behind the threat.

When Theo uncovers an even more insidious plot, the covert agency the Reeses work for, Tactical Operational Support, swoops into action.

Song files have been modified to steal personal data from devices and emit a tone that drives listeners into a homicidal rage. Theo and his parents race against the clock to stop this mysterious enemy from releasing the music on an unsuspecting populace and causing worldwide chaos.

Just when Theo thinks the mission couldn’t be more complicated, Eddie shows up in New York looking to hang out with his boyfriend.

No one ever said being a teenage secret agent would be easy.

No, no way! This book 3 followed Theo's adventures after the events in book 3 and WOW. The adventures are more intense and dangerous than ever, the plot is really witty and entertaining and Theo needed to be clever than ever to save the day. But what made this book so intense is an unexpected twist that got to me and caused me a sensation of irreality. I didn't see that coming and the rest of the book was heartbreaking and unbelievable. I am yet to accept what happened so I need to read book 4 ASAP to see how this story continued. I am in awe for the way the author took us through so intricate plot with turns and twists everywhere until the biggest twist of all. Brilliant! but again No way!
Now, I also had the opportunity to hear the audioversion of this book and it is amazing. Mr Kirt Graves took this eventful book and made a wonderful performance, with an agile reading, that managed beautifully all the emotions and feelings in between the action resulting in a narration that got me at the edge of my seat the whole time. One of the best books I have ever read or heard! WOW!

Jeff Adams continues to crank up the intensity level with each book in the Codename: Winger series. During our past visits to Theo Reese's world as a covert cybersecurity operative for the secret Tactical Operational Support (TOS) organization, we see him grow from the computer programming prodigy to an agent that can and will function effectively in the field. His front-line involvement has more to do with the very realistic, totally credible Murphy's Law scenarios that happen in life. Whatever can go wrong, does go wrong in real life and one can imagine this will always be par for the course when faced with protecting the citizenry from terrorism in all its many forms.
In 'Audio Assault, Book 3', Theo's teen boy's plans for the summer are interrupted when his parents decide to help his father's old friend who, along with his daughter Sofia (chart-topping pop star), has been targeted by kidnappers. Oliver Glenwood, an 80s music star who runs his own label desperately needs help from friends he believes are working for the FBI (Theo's mom) and Homeland Security (Theo's dad) as covers for their work as TOS agents. With the objective of bolstering The Glenwood's security and finding out who's behind it all, Theo's parents take him to New York under the cover of a family vacation. Because Theo is the same age as Sofia, he is expected to keep an eye on her while providing additional cyber support for their non-TOS mission.
When Oliver's wife (philanthropist and humanitarian) is honored at a banquet, the event gets crashed by people hoping to abduct Sofia. Theo prevents the abduction but becomes certain something more sinister is afoot and sets out to uncover it. When Theo discovers that music files on Glenwood's label have been modified to steal personal data from devices, the mission becomes one for Tactical Operational Support. An already bad situation becomes worse when it is determined that corrupted music files emit a subliminal tone that will make 20% of listeners violent--a potential for causing maximum chaos at any well-attended event. Unfortunately, Theo is among the 20% vulnerable to the audio assault.
Then there's the complication of Eddie showing up in New York for an unexpected visit, courtesy of Sofia. Though challenges with the mission are suitably resolved, things between the boys go horribly, dangerously wrong! The writer ends the book with a resolution for the story's principal conflict but leaves readers with a cliffhanger with respect to the relationship between Theo and his boyfriend Eddie that absolutely MUST be resolved by the last book of the series. The ending is the kind that simply MUST happen in order to drive the series towards a fantastic conclusion that is every bit as exceptional as each of the books! It's definitely nerve-racking and also earth-shattering--in a word, it's BRILLIANT and promises so very much from the writer.

    4.5 - 5 #EvilAuthor Stars...

I’m not sure what I expected when I started the Codename: Winger series, but so far I’ve been impressed. So impressed that I could kick myself for not picking up the series earlier. On the plus side, by waiting, there’s no wait time between books. Normally, that’s not an issue because I don’t always pick up one book in a series after another. After finishing Audio Assault, I’m pretty sure I’ll be breaking that trend. Which brings me to another point… this is going to be the hardest book in the series so far to review and keep my spoilery feelings to myself. *sigh*

The premise of Audio Assault was pretty unique and pretty scary too. Basically, the villain was using music as a weapon. It didn’t affect everyone in the same way, but the results were still devastating. Unfortunately, Theo learned first hand how vulnerable unsuspecting people could be to the assault, even knowing what was going on didn’t keep him safe from attack. He was also under additional pressure because of Eddie’s surprise visit. He was happy to get to spend time with him, but keeping his secret was going to be even harder when Eddie was right there in the middle of a job.

This is a series that keeps readers (at least this reader) glued to the turning pages. The danger is never expected, but seems to be around every corner and nothing is quite what it seems. There were also some added emotions added to the mix that kind of blindsided me. I’m not sure if there’s any fixing the way things were left by the end of Audio Assault. Turns out there’s an #EvilAuthor side of Jeff Adams that I didn’t know about. Needless to say, Netminder just got moved way up on my TBR pile.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Audio Assault. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbroken Winger
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2021
In this story I felt for poor Winger, he has a tough time in this story. Which I felt was a nice balance of teenage Theo and responsible agent Winger. A lot happens in this story and I can’t wait to read the final book. Although I have a feeling I will miss him.
This is an enjoyable story with moments that frustrates Winger and leaves him questioning everything. Great third book.

Kirt Graves' narration is perfect. Great characterisation of the teenage characters and the adults. He gives the story more depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio - Winger gets seriously dinged
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 19, 2021
I've been loving this series of YA novels by Jeff Adams who has created in Theo (aka Winger) a believable teen hero who has had to deal with some pretty scary things to date. Furthermore, in this one, he not only has to deal with saving the general public but also with heartbreak and betrayal by a loved one. Highly recommended gay action adventure teen romance.
Kirt Graves does a great job with the audio version, giving the characters their own voices.
