- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe rules of the ordinary world do not apply to Avalon—neither to nature nor to humans (and apparent humans). This mystical realm of ancient priestesses and Druids now serves as a sanctuary for embattled Europe's nobility, where Avangarde knights protect and train these young people in peaceful relations. Irish knight Patrick Gawain has attained a leadership position, known as the Knight of the Cup since he brought the Cup of the Last Supper, obtained from faeries, to heal Aimee, his on-and-off sweetheart. In the continuation of Patrick's adventures from Echoes of Avalon, this story delves even deeper into the intersections of magical, 12th century Europe, Arthurian, and Biblical realms. I found this weaving of dimensions the most fascinating part of the story. Gripping characters capture your imagination, including Cardinal and self-appointed Anti-Pope Teodorico and his eerie lover Lilliana, and the "candidati," a group of unusual children he brings to Avalon to help him obtain the Cup. Set in the turbulent era when Emperor Henry's ambitious son, in collusion with Teodorico, was challenging the power of Pope Paschal, themes of greater historical significance merge with personal trials and the spiritual challenge to live up to higher principles. Although dialogue feels stiff at times, and there are a few jarring emotional shifts, the sweeping scope of the story carries you along with intense scenes of supernatural creatures, stirring battles, urgent quests, magical happenings, interpersonal conflicts, and heart-warming friendships and forgiveness. This is a tale rich in allegory and religious symbolism—watch for the appearance of Biblical figures in contemporaneous guises. Beginning and ending with Patrick in dire straits in battle, it was a delight to see who came to his rescue.
