No Refuge (Brainrush Series Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 344 ratings

Wall Street Journal #1 bestselling author Richard Bard, who entertained fans with his wildly successful Brainrush thriller series, now unleashes the heart-pounding series finale in a two-book ride that will take your breath away.

Jake Bronson's family and friends are mourning him. They'd watched as he sacrificed himself so their lives could return to normal. But normal wasn't to be. The megalomaniac whom Jake had killed during his suicide assault left a legacy of videos that damn Jake and everyone associated with him, leading to a price being put on their heads, dead or alive. They go to ground, unaware their every move is being tracked by a new breed of young, tech-savvy jihadists about to unleash vengeance on America's homeland--with Jake's family and the unsuspecting citizens of Los Angeles in their crosshairs.

As the jaws of the terrorist trap begin to close, Jake's eight-year-old son, Alex, faces a threat of his own. He carries a burden only his lost father would understand. A journey that begins as he follows in his father's footsteps leads him to a group of terminally ill orphans. One of their siblings has been abducted by child traffickers. Alex can't ignore their cry for help, and the unlikely alliance of youths embarks on a nothing-to-lose rescue mission that has little chance of success - all while unearthly visions demand his attention.

But the bloodthirsty outcry against Alex's family and friends reaches beyond those who wish them harm, as do the visions that reveal their dark secrets to Alex. Help is on the way...

An international thriller with soul. Ideal reading for fans of Michael Crichton, Nora Roberts, Clive Cussler, James Rollins, J.D. Robb, Marcus Sakey, Michael Grumley, Brad Thor, Dan Brown, Matthew Reilly, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, and Vince Flynn.

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy of No Refuge in exchange for my review of the work.

I'm an avid reader of SciFi, and especially enjoy 'series' novels that allow me to immerse into the world they describe (think Isaac Asimov's Foundation, or Larry Niven's Fleet of Worlds/Ringworld). To catch me, that world has to be unique, thoughtful and imaginative. To keep me, the author has to fully develop his characters, giving them interesting, credible personalities, take the storyline in compelling, thought-provoking, tantalizing directions, deliver the story in a consistent manner through each installment, and above all, remain true to the vision set out in the first installment.

Mr. Bard has certainly met, and exceeded, every one of those criteria with Brainrush and especially the latest installment No Refuge. I, too, was ensnared by the opening line of this book, as it called up the events from the previous installment, and heralded what was to come in this one. Character development, for both new and existing characters is very well done, and the pace of action throughout is intense. I noted another reviewer's reference to characters doing things not possible in the real world. I guess my feeling there is that any author creating a work of this magnitude wants to create a world apart from our own, and not every aspect of that world will, or should, mirror our own. Guess that's part of the fun of diving deeply into the world as painted in the Brainrush series. Once again, I was literally immersed in the Brainrush world, and it was over all too soon. While No Refuge can stand alone, you can't fully appreciate the characters and events if you haven't read the previous installments. Please do, you won't regret it!

Thanks, Mr. Bard! Another great read.

I have to admit that I have been hooked on Brainrush since the very first book, Richard Bard is such a wonderful author and gifted storyteller.. Unlike other book series that drag out a story that could be told in just one book every book in the Brainrush series is a full length novel.
In book 6, No Refuge, the story about the main characters that we have come to love continues so it is definitely recommended that you read the previous 5 books as well. But believe me, even if you start out with this book, you are going to want to read the others, too. If this is your first adventure with Brainrush you are still going to grasp the story as there are some explanations about what had happened previously but you will want get the full picture.
The story about Jake, his family and his friends continues in the fast paced fashion that we have come accustomed to. As usual, there are lots of sci-fi, action, drama and adventure. The story line about the terminally ill kids and their travels was a bit unbelievable but this is a work of fiction anyhow. I had a hard time putting this book down and can't wait to read the next / last book in this series.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I've read all five previous Brainrush books, starting with the first book in the series in 2011. The first book introduced the characters and subsequent books followed their adventures. This is a review of book six, "No Refuge", but could apply to all previous books of the series when I say the writing style is fast-paced but very engaging, like I'm sitting in a room with other readers to hear Richard tell what's going on in the world of series protagonist Jake Bronson and friends. "No Refuge" builds upon the earlier books so I must admit to having an investment in wanting to know how everyone in Jake's world is doing, but I believe a new reader will be drawn in with the author's combination of technical knowledge and descriptive prose. At any point the action starts to unfold, it ramps up very quickly, daring you to hang on to see what happens. That would be enough to hold anyone's attention, but there are also descriptions of people and places that are so richly described, I imagined I could see them. As my final word, I have read books for decades and know if I want to keep reading or not. "No Refuge" is definitely a "keep reading" book, especially with its companion volume coming out soon.

Disclaimer - I received an advance copy of this in exchange for a review. No Refuge is the 6th book in the Brain Rush series.

If you like action books this series is for you. No Refuge is well written and, after the first few chapters, fast paced. This particular volume IMHO can't be read by itself, context from the previous books is sorely needed. I liked it fine having read the other books, but after I was done, I thought about it. I really didn't buy into the actions and speech of these children. Terminally ill children (some having recent chemo) could not run around, climb buildings, fist fight terrorists all led by a 7 year old. That's just my feeling.

Though the first chapters are a bit slow, the action picks up and keeps going until the end. That being said this book seems a bit unnecessary. I don't really think a whole book should have been written when a few chapters would do. The reader also has to really suspend belief reading this. The book concerns Jake's 7 years old son, Alex, dealing with some harrowing scenes involving various bad guys, escaping and traveling to Bolivia. Now granted he is augmented by the infusion of an alien influence giving him fantastic mental powers sought after by the US goverment, the mysterious chinese enemy and Islamic terrorists, but nobody noticed or questioned a 7 year old boy and few other children traveling internationally on their own? Really? He then travels to a hospital for terminally ill children. Alex convinces a group of these children to help him fight his enemies.

I did actually enjoy the book. I feel that it just serves as a bridge from the last 5 books to the final chapter Against All Odds. I look forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars It took a while but it was worth waiting...

I do need to admit, I am a hug fan of the Brainrush Series. At the end of each book I did want to grab the sequel and continue reading. Well let's focus on this book. It starts with a very tense and thrilling sequence before giving me the chance to take a breath while continue to read. I find it amazing how the autor includes real world problems into the story giveing the reader a chance to think: "--- hey, that's so wrong but wait, this is also happening in our real world..." Get the book and you'll understand what I am talking about here once you finished the first three chapters.

The other thing I did like about this sequel is the constant but not too much reminding about the previous books. It did make me want to re-read the first books (which I actually did).

And finally the story keeps coming up with amazing twists and surprises that did keep me reading till the very end. And now I am again in trouble because I do need to get my fingers and eyes on the final book.

Did I mention that I enjoyed each and every page? The way the story moves from super fast and super thrilling to a slower and relaxing phase until it finally picks up pace and thriller only to come to an end which did leave me waiting for more. But waiting for more in a good way.

Enjoy it. But even better start reading at book one and you'll enjoy it even more!
