Bastion Saturn (The Saturn Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 606 ratings

What if you had to choose between your mind and your heart? In the year 2101, most humans have given up their free will and connected their minds to an Artificial Intelligence. The only way to escape this tyranny is to live off-world, in the wild and dangerous frontier of Saturn and its moons. The only caveats to living there: the funds to fly a billion miles into space and a pledge to keep vigil against the threat of AI. Meet down on his luck ne’er-do-well, Caleb Day. Hoping to start a new life as a cop trainee in the colonies of Saturn, Caleb rediscovers that the law is not always fair and that some people are more equal than others. When he rescues a group of civilians from a brutal raid, he becomes a fugitive himself. The group must beg, borrow, and steal their way across Saturn's moons to survive. One refugee, an android named Bert—who was designed only to serve—disturbingly, and against all programming, seems to be developing human emotions and curiosity. Bastion Saturn is a swashbuckling space opera that explores the best and worst of humanity, while exploring the meaning of being human. It is a story of love, courage, and rebellion, set in a stunning and diverse solar system. If you like action-packed sci-fi with humor, romance, and twists, you will love this book by C. Chase Harwood.

Author C. Chase Harwood (aka Chris)

C. Chase Harwood made a career in Hollywood, decorating sets for film and television before turning his passion for storytelling into clicks on a keyboard. While scaling the walls of the screenwriting world, he chose to experiment with prose and found a fondness for Scifi-action-adventure. Within that framework, he gets to explore the countless ways that humans interact while under duress. "Life is all the more lived when the consequences are high. When told as a tale it can be quite a page-turner," says Harwood. He lives in Southern California with his costume designer wife and young boy girl twins.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's Asimov's FOUNDATION series in Uma Thurman's KILL BILL motorcycle suit. With nanobots. Enjoy!" - Mr. P "-- like mixing a political and theoretical element like THE EXPANSE, the quick wit of FIREFLY, and the craziness of GUARDIANS." - Wright Review

From the Author

For the sensitive ear, Bastion Saturn contains violence, salty language, and a main character with rather sexist attitudes. Think Cable, not Network.Though written as a stand-alone novel, for those who are wishing for a sequel your wish will come true in 2018.Enjoy the ride!

My interest in this novel was peaked when I read about it on the Kindle Scout page. I voted for it and received a free copy when it won the contest for publication. Having read Chase Harwood's Of Sudden Origin, I already knew the potential for a good read was there. I wasn't wrong!

Bastion Saturn is about Wild West Cowboy Space Pirates and Evil Artificial Intelligence! Well, not exactly, but the elements are there. The action is pretty much non-stop, which made it a page turner for me. The background setup is of an AI + Human Hive-Mind Singularity in 2101 forcing non-conformists to escape to space. The AI feels threatened by their very existence and takes steps to remove the thread. That dread permeates the entire work.

The struggle to establish a viable existences on the many moons of the Saturn ring system encapsulates the actions of the main characters. They come at you fast paced and fully formed. Caleb Day, the petty thief and general wanderer, annoyed me at first. I guess he was supposed to though. He finds himself in the middle of a corrupt Police action where - finding his conscience isn't as sadistic as the other participants - he ends up throwing his lot in with the fleeing refugees. One of those, a very attractive woman named Jennifer, is also somewhat more than she lets on at times. They end up in a series of unpleasant moon hopping situations as they try to find a new way to make it in the Saturn system.

Character development isn't a main component of the book, although there is some, especially for Caleb. The general direction of change is more of a getting-to-know-each-other kind progression where familiarity and acceptance between them bonds the gang together in a way that works. There is quirky humor employed in the book. I had a few eye-rolls at some of it. A couple of times I felt like I was missing an inside joke as if the author forgot to explain the lead in part. Hard to put my finger on though. Still, I can remember the character's names and their quirks, so they left an impression.

I found the science to be believable and fun. It may not be as detailed as I sometimes like, but the trade-off is the action. That is epic, and kept the novel moving from start to finish. One nag I do have is the roughshod yet dependable equipment. It always seems to work, no matter how much abuse or neglect it takes. Sure, it is 100 years in the future, but space is a very hard place to live... and stay alive... in. The jumping in and out of suits and airlocks. The crashing and scraping into things. The tracking in of dust particles. All that amounts to some very serious maintenance issues to me. But again, maintenance is boring, so.... action!

I enjoyed this read, and I look forward to the sequel (if there is one). I give this novel 5 stars and call it an Exciting Read.

Caleb Day is one of life's edge cases - not quite a waster, yet not quite altogether, either. His intent when escaping an Earth where everyone caught up in AI singularity have adopted the 'Resistance is futile' motto from the Borg, was to reach Humanity's outpost on Saturn and "wing it". Of course, being an edge case, things do not go right for Caleb, and an unexpected curve ball nudges him way off the course he planned to take.

Down and out, but still morally centered, Caleb takes the last reasonable job left him and joins the police force. Of course, that does not go to plan and he is launched front and center as the reluctant leader of a ragtag band of survivors who find themselves caught up in fights with the local mobster and defending Saturn against the singularity-intent Eathers who can't abide a freewheeling Saturn and are compelled to bring it back into the fold...or kill everyone trying.

This is a fun read, told at pace but without the plot holes that typically develop when authors prioritize action over accuracy. The technology is described at the high-level, because this is really a story about friendship, selflessness, and what it means to belong to society. Protagonist Caleb is our lightening rod for this, but it is robot Bert's journey that really embodies the themes. It has slapstick undertones - how key bad guy Henry Lo Wang is treated is a prime example - but they add a humorous element entirely in line with how Lady Luck 'shines' on Caleb. The ragtag gang is well drawn, with lazy stereotypes avoided, including what could have been an easy romance between some of the characters that Harwood does well to avoid.

This novel is peppered with violence, but it's broadcast TV-like, not "John Wick", and if there was profanity it was so low-level that I don't recall it (I do have a high tolerance in that regard though, so don't assume it is f-bomb free). The descriptions of Saturn and the various moons are detailed, and while Harwood notes some simplification of the effects of gravity, you'd need to be an expert to notice. I liked that the spaceships were slow, cramped, and dangerous. It allowed for some tense moments, and is pretty much how I expect such things to be. (The Em-drive sequence was a little try-hard for me, but unless you're up on that particular piece of magic, you likely won't notice.)

There are a few current place references that make no sense this far into the future, but none of them were structurally relevant, and I appreciate that setting the scene with a quick "The burger bar was like McDonald's" saves time and monotony for the reader. Also, it is a standalone novel, even though there is a sequel (which I've not read yet) so you not left with a literal cliffhanger, which is refreshing.

"Bastion Station" is recommended if you like lighthearted sci-fi thrillers set in the solar system. The tech is not much more along than ours, so there are no warp drives, no amazing ray guns, and no outlandishly augmented characters. But there are good guys and bad guys and despite his (mostly self-imposed) limitations, Caleb is a good guy just looking to get ahead. Just like most of us, in other words. And that's a good thing!

The storyline concept was very compelling, the physics and locations were clearly meticulously researched and credible, and even new and foreign (to me) ideas like the human-AI collective was written in an accessible and interesting way.

The only thing that stopped full enjoyment of the book for me was the characters’ lack of depth: their inner monologues are generally uniformly petty and the “friendships” that develop don’t make sense to me. For example, how did Caleb develop friendships between any of the three women in the group when his only thoughts about them were frustration with their not being interested in him sexually? Similarly, beyond that Jennifer stopped pushing away Caleb’s advances at the end, what else connected them?

This is a fun book, getting together a disparate group to fight an enemy that is coming. I liked the concept and execution of the story, the characters were likeable.
*Edit. The punctuation and spelling has mostly been corrected which makes the story flow well. I have added a star because of this.

What a bunch of, as it turns out, heroes. Characters brim full of opposites yet they gel together to turn the tables on a variety of opponents. Quirky in many aspects and lively. Too much swearing for my taste.
