Beautifully Fractured: A Grumpy/Sunshine Gay Awakening (Front Range University Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 617 ratings

Two broken boys. One dorm room. Can they help each other heal, or will they stay forever fractured?

Ever have someone get you so well it’s like looking in a mirror?
That’s what I think of when I look at Liam.
I might as well be looking at myself from a few months ago.
Broken and jaded.

But I’ve come out the other side, mostly, and I’m finally in a good place.
I figure if I did it, so can he.
So, I make it my mission to befriend him.

Predictably, he doesn’t make it easy.
But I’m persistent.
And then he suffers a minor accident.
One that results in me having to give him a helping hand in ways I never expected.

Ways that make me think I may not be as broken as I thought.

To say I’m confused is an understatement, but there’s one thing I know for certain.
Liam is the key to one door and the bolt that could prevent another from ever opening.

And I have to choose which I want him to be.

**Beautifully Fractured is a high-heat MM romance with medium angst that features a grumpy/sunshine relationship, forced proximity, hurt/comfort situations and a sexual-awakening. This is book one in a series of interconnected standalones. Though the main characters are athletes, sports are not a major plot point in this book, so the author doesn't consider this a sports romance. Rather, it's a romance that happens to feature people who play sports.

Hi! I'm Michele-or at least that's the name I write under-because my parents and my kids are not allowed to read my books. Ever. Though sports romance is my guilty pleasure, I like to dabble in all tropes, genres and genders. My books are set in my home state of Colorado, because to me the mountains are the only thing that can compete with a good book. My favorite food is Mexican, my favorite shoes are flip-flops, and my drink of choice is whiskey, the same as virtually every character I've ever written.

Cruz and Liam meet when they are assigned as roommates in their first year of college. Cruz is a football player studying engineering, and Liam is a lacrosse player who’s pre-med. Cruz is a little confused about how he identifies; he thinks he's asexual and assumes he’s straight, but he’s never been attracted to anyone. Liam is gay and quickly gets a crush on Cruz. However, he’s careful to be respectful of Cruz not only because of his sexuality but because the two men have become friends.

When Liam breaks his dominant arm, Cruz, who’s heard Liam getting himself off most nights in the shower, offers to help him. To his surprise, Cruz finds himself getting turned on by Liam. The second time he helps him out, he gets fully aroused, and Liam offers to go down on him. Soon, they’re hooking up regularly, although Cruz initially wants to keep their relationship quiet due to his potential future in the NFL.

"Beautifully Fractured," is a captivating love story between two men who start off as roommates, and eventually fall in love. The novel employs several popular romantic tropes, including friends-to-lovers, grumpy/sunshine, and forced proximity. While there is some angst present in the book, it is not between the main characters. Instead, the story emphasizes hurt/comfort and the healing power of love.

Cruz, one of the main characters, is portrayed as an incredibly kind and caring individual who is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His desire to help and protect Liam, the other protagonist, leads to some steamy scenes between the two. Personally, I found the book to be highly enjoyable and would rate it four and a half stars out of five. It is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance novel, especially those who appreciate the friends-to-lovers trope.

I did not go in prepared for the emotional damage this book would cause me. Both of the men have experienced loss and deal with that together. It was a beautiful story.

That being said as an asexual individual, I love seeing rep but I could have done without ace being in all caps all the time (ACE) like it's an acronym or a hardware store.

Wow I was not expecting this book to hit as hard as it did. I also couldn’t believe how good the author did at portraying an ACE character.

This book honestly made me so sad in certain parts but I have to say I absolutely loved it! It had a lot of heart and the characters made you want to get to know them even more! I am so excited to see them in the next book!

When a grumpy lacrosse player and a golden retriever football star fall in love in the most natural of ways it’s truly beautiful!

I’m a sucker for College settings and this one was very sweet, I liked the adorable and patient Cruz and the boy with a tough past Liam. I know it’s integral to the plot but the hand jobs got a bit excessive for me. Loved Cruz family and so sad to see the emotional neglect of Liam’s parents. It was a sweet read and I give it 3 1\2 stars

I enjoyed this a lot! Great hurt/comfort without too much angst. There were some typos but not enough to detract from my enjoyment. I’ll definitely read more.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the all the characters including the secondaries (who I'm hoping to see throughout the series!) The way the author was beautifully detailed in one MC's journey to discovering and coming to terms with his sexuality was SO well done. As someone who has had challenges with understanding their own path, there was so much about Cruz's journey that I could really relate to. It felt very authentic.
This story had depth and the MCs had terrific chemistry with a perfect amount of steam vs plot.
I'll be looking for more of this author's work for sure!

Beautifully Fractured by Michele Lenard is the first book in the Front Range University series set in Colorado. It is about a young man, Cruz Chambers, who, along with his best friend Xavier, plans on playing football and majoring in engineering. At the last moment, Xavier bowed out to attend college with his girlfriend, Piper, in Kanas, which would mean giving up a football scholarship. Cruz reported to campus early for football practice but requested to stay in the honors dorm instead of the athlete dorm after the summer. His teammates are Cameron and Jagger, who are best friends. They both play football and study similar things, such as physical therapy and athletic training. Cruz's roommate, William "Liam" Harrington, is from Arizona, and his parents have checked out after his younger sister Lizzie died from brain cancer at the age of six two years ago; Liam has been raising himself since her diagnosis. You could say he has issues, but who wouldn't? He was outed in high school, where his supposed friends beat him and broke his arm; his parents never showed up; he graduated from high school, and they didn't show up; they were supposed to drop him off at college, but they didn't show.

This story is heartbreaking and informative. It shows the start of Cruz and Liam's friendship, trust forming, acceptance, and appreciation. Also, there is an intimate awakening that changes their relationship.

Beautifully Fracture is my first read by Michele Lenard, and I have to say that how she describes and introduces the various sexual identities is very helpful. However, the way she makes the gay lifestyle acceptable to everyone in this story is a little naive since it's not like that in real life, but it's something to strive for. This story is more about finding oneself, loving, and accepting each other than football. Kiddos to Michele Lenard!

This was much more emotional than I thought it would be. All the issues of grief and considering ones sexuality was handled beautifully. The emotion was palpable.

My first novel from this author and it won't be the last .
Now onto the next in the series

I can't say how much I enjoyed reading Cruz and Liam's story. It's got everything, in turns, funny, touching, tender and at times heartbreaking. I loved the pace of the story and never felt the urge to skip ahead. The characters and supporting cast are so well developed and integral to the story. Cruz's family is a hoot and I loved the interactions between the MCs and other characters exceptionally well put together. The love story seems to grow organically and out of many stand out scenes, the one scene where Cruz and Liam are deliberately intimate for the first time will stay with me for a long time. Michele Lenard has gifted us something truly special and I will definitely read it again. I can only recommend this novel. It's a treat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
Reviewed in Australia on May 17, 2024
This story captivated me in countless ways, and I doubt any review I write could truly capture its essence. It was a beautiful mix of hurt, comfort, support and love.

Cruz, at first glance, appears as cheerful and uncomplicated as a golden retriever. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, we delve into the complexities of his character: his hidden fears, his struggles with self-identity, and his uncertainties. These elements are portrayed with such depth that I found myself increasingly impressed. Cruz's pragmatic approach to life's challenges, paired with an inherent steadiness, made him a character I grew to love deeply as I turned the pages.

Liam, on the other hand, tugged at my heartstrings repeatedly. Despite a painful history with his family that could have easily led him to become bitter and withdrawn, he shows remarkable resilience. Liam opens up to Cruz, revealing the person beneath his rough exterior. He forms unexpected friendships, overcoming past betrayals and moving beyond the shadows of familial tragedy.

The relationship between Cruz and Liam was nothing short of endearing. Their interactions, epitomised by the catchphrase "I gotchu," showcased their mutual support, understanding, and the grace they extended to each other. Their bond was a testament to what it means to truly be there for someone.

I cannot recommend this book more. It was my first from Michele Lenard and I can't wait to read my way through her other books. For those about to dive into this story, prepare for a journey of heartwarming and surprising moments that are best discovered as they unfold. This is a tale that promises both "awww" and "oh wow" moments in equal measure.
