Beck (Bar 28 Book 4) Kindle Edition
Beck Thompson is out and proud. He has a job he loves and friends he considers his family. Okay, he doesn’t have a boyfriend, but chances are slim he’ll find the man who’ll accept all of him, his past and his tattoos. He’s happy. Sort of.
Until he sees the perfect man…with the same woman hanging on his arm every night. Damn.
Munro Sylvester has put every aspect of his life on hold to make his business a success. And he’s done it. But he’s never been true to himself.
One look at the gorgeous, colourful man changes everything. He knows he has to make the first move, but he may risk losing everything he’s worked so hard for.
Can Beck trust his heart that Munro is the one for him? Is Munro brave enough to come out and fight for their happily ever after?
Beck has a tattooed bartender who has never had any luck with love, a hard-working gym owner who’s never said “I’m gay” out loud, instant attraction, and well-meaning, meddling friends.
It is the fourth book in the BAR 28 series, a MM contemporary series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but you’ll enjoy them best by reading them in order. This series is based in the UK.

About the author

You will normally find JJ in the living room—typing away—with her dog, Siddiqi. As a hopeless romantic, she dives into her stories, always falling in love with her men, making sure they get the happy ever after they deserve, even if they do have to work hard for it.
As a bona fide bookaholic, a wine-drinking and swear-like-a-sailor type of girl, she has yet to work out how to act her age!! LOL. And she has no intentions of growing up or growing old gracefully.
JJ lives in a small, very quiet, village in Lincolnshire, UK, with her husband and dog, and spends all day dreaming up stories full of really hot men.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2022The Prologue starts six months earlier to set the stage for the romance between Beck and Munro. Beck is an out-and-proud gay man working at Bar 28. He’s covered in tattoos and intrigues Munro who comes with his work buddies to relax but more importantly, deep in the closet. One of the “work buddies” is a woman named Lucie who has been after Munro for years and years. Her jealousy will play a bitter part to this great gay couple. Thing is Munro is a very successful business man who runs several popular workout gyms and Munro is afraid if he tells Beck how he feels, it will impact his business; Munro would have to come out of the proverbial closet. There will be lots of conflicts that our couple will need to clear away before they get to their HEA.
This was a very explicit gay romance. Munro and Beck fall in love by 50% of the book so the reader is left wondering when the next shoe will drop. Lucie plays her games several times but there are other “inconveniences” that occur that disturb our sweet couple. Beck’ attitude being one of those inconveniences; he’s been mistreated so many times in the past. Can he really believe this perfect guy really likes HIM?
I truly enjoyed this second book in the series that I have read. Well-written and edited. Lots of steam. Just the right number of insecurities. Wonderful ending with a few surprises. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2024The whole quick fix (shouldn’t have even went so far) drama was much. The intimate parts were too often. This book just seemed thrown together. Like there was an idea that got lost as more was written. I would say go ahead and read it as it’s part of the series. Just didn’t work well for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2022I look forward to each book in this series! Beck is a sexy tattooed bartender that has a bit of an inferiority complex because of his family. He's smitten when he sees Munro but figures there's no way that a guy that hot would want to be with him. Munro has been eying Beck for months but is afraid of what will happen to his business sponsors if he comes out. When the desire to be happy and see how things could work out overrides the potential fallout, these two sizzle! Their journey is not simple but it is affirming and positive and shows Beck that found family can love you so much better than blood. I loved how previous characters played such a big role in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022BAR 28 Book #4 is AMAZING!! Beck is a set in his ways bartender!! Munro is a gym owner. These two are an unlikely pair. They are completely smitten but both balk for their own reasons. Beck is a bit of a brat. Good thing Munro has a level head. I thought this Book was EXQUISITE!! All the Bar 28 family are present and accounted for and make this complete. I loved these characters!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS BAR 28 SERIES!!!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2022Fitness Gym Owner Munro notices hot Bartender Beck and its lust at first sight which has him re-thinking his closeted status. This is low angst, insta-love, soap opera-ish, sex-filled romance. Initially, I was not a fan of Munro but he eventually stepped up and out for the relationship he wanted. I did like Munro’s parents, the appearance of previous characters from this series, and even the crazy antagonist “witch”, all of which added just the right amount of drama to the tale. Overall, a sweet, sexy read. Rating: 3.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Next up should be Jonas & Haydn’s story?!?
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2022Escaping into the world of Bar 28 is one of my favorite things to do. Who doesn't want to leave the world of grime and sadness aside for a moment, right? Beck is adorable (fine...Munro is too, I guess. He just made me mad at him once or twice). Beautifully, written, with just the right balance of heat and romance. JJ Harper never fails to deliver the feels and this book is no exception. Great job.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2022I absolutely love this series. Theses hurt men all deserve the HEA they finally get in these stories and Beck & Munro's story is another great read.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2022This story about two guys -- Munro Sylvester and Beck Thompson -- who manage to find their HEA despite several instances of mis- or non-communication left me mostly unimpressed. Munro needs to come out as gay and Beck needs to let go of his insecurity. They spend a lot of time going over the same ground. I wanted more than Beck's and Munro's constant insecurities that led them to make snap judgments and get angry with each other at the drop of a hat. In fact, it seemed like the story -- once they got over the initial awkwardness of meeting and deciding they wanted to try for something with each other -- was set up so they could have a lot of make-up or comfort sex after each misunderstanding or disagreement. I'm all for sexy times in romance novels, but after a while, I just skimmed over the ones that seemed to pop up like the Energizer Bunny every few pages or every other chapter.
I didn't care about these men, honestly, which is guaranteed to take star points away. Also, odd little inconsistencies bothered me (probably because I wasn't invested in their story, to begin with), like the fact that Munro has been building his business for ten years, apparently fresh out of high school? Then I read where he went to college. So, was he building his business WHILE he was in college? Color me confused, but that seems like a timeline issue. Their ages are never mentioned, unless I missed it, so that didn't help me figure out that puzzle. It might have helped if I could tell how old they were. And because Beck comes off as young anyway, while Munro seems older, I was lost. Small stuff, as I said, but if their story had been able to hold my attention more, I might not have cared so much. I rounded it up because it's definitely more than 2 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s a ‘Jewel’ of a book 😉
It’s finally Beck & Munro’s turn to hopefully find their HEA in the Bar 28 series and I’ve been waiting and waiting for this one and I was so pleased to finally get my hands on this.
Beautiful Beck is out and proud and is unapologetic about it - as it should be- and he’s waiting and hoping for his one after seeing his friends find their HEA in the previous books in the series.
Munro is the love interest that’s soon quashed because Beck doesn’t feel he is interested in men due to Lucie the ‘friend’ that he always hangs with and, who appears all over him all of the time. It’s really because of this fact that their relationship falters a bit in the beginning, but it turns out Munro is very much interested in men and in particular Beck but he’s not out to anyone, not his friends or anybody else.
It’s from here that the story evolves and the main characters start their journey which involves several rocky and tumultuous times because Beck does not want to be anyones secret, and really this is what tends to cause the initial friction between them both alongside Munro’s ‘friend!”
Can they both get on the same page at the same time and make this work or do they simply not want the same things?
Beck is another wonderful edition to a brilliant series involving a strong and loyal group of friends who make you want to visit them time and again just to be part of their world. I felt a connection straight away with this particular story and within the first few lines I just knew that it was going to be a firm favourite with me for always- it’s hard to pinpoint why but sometimes that’s the beauty of the written word.
The growth of the characters was strong and there was several different story arcs throughout but it was easy to follow and never felt superfluous or unnecessary. Once Munro took that chance on Beck and let go of his fears and told his friends and family that he was gay, they never really looked back. The chemistry explosive( the sex…woah!), the love strong and miscommunications dealt with realistically.
The writing and storytelling by J J Harper has become better and better through the years and if you’ve not had the joy well…you are missing out for sure.
So in summary a truly exceptional story in a truly exceptional series by a truly exceptional author.
These books are standalone within a series about a strong friendship group that makes your heart happy. Read them all from the beginning for the full heartwarming effect!
Now Jonas…let’s be having you!
Ooh and if this review doesn’t persuade you then …..there is a piercing involved…say no more…..you’re welcome!

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and sappy
Such a sweet and sappy story, just what I was in the mood for. I wasn't totally in love with the MC's. Not sure why everyone has to turn out to be modelish and rich but I enjoyed the end result.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting End to a Good Series
I have read and enjoyed all the books in the Bar 28 series and so I have been looking forward to reading Beck’s story and I just have to mention that the cover for this book is absolutely gorgeous and whenever Beck’s tattoos were discussed I had the imagery of the book’s cover model to draw on.
Beck was a lovely guy but with very low self esteem after his horrendous family threw him out when he was 15. He watched as all the guys he worked the bar with one by one found their person and he felt lonely. Monroe had noticed and watched Beck for months before introducing himself. He owned a few gyms in major cities, was a social media influencer, wore expensive clothes and drove a fancy car and Beck didn’t think he was worth Monroe’s time. Monroe though was hiding a huge secret, he was deep in the closet, even his best friends since school didn’t know.
This was a low angst love story with some hurdles for both men to overcome, lots, like lots of steamy scenes and lots of previously loved characters and some new ones and one extremely unlikeable one! Monroe’s parents were lovely.
As usual Jess Harper’s writing is so good and very descriptive. I particularly loved the way she described the scenes with Lizbeth and Beck’s beautiful body artwork, I could visualise the individual tattoos and hearing him describe their meaning was wonderful.
A fitting end to the Bar 28 series a story of chosen family with all the gorgeous guys finding their special person.
