- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2016I'm not typically drawn to this genre of book -- which I'd define as "romantic thriller" -- but I've enjoyed this writer's take on the topic of books and writers on her blog, so it seemed time to explore some of her narrative work. I picked up copies of all three of her Grayson Trilogy and was immediately swept up into the saga of Emma Grayson.
Though I've read the entire series -- A Single Step, Before the Dawn, and this one, Thicker Than Water -- I am leaving my same review on all three pages because my perspective is about the trilogy as a whole (rather than any one of the three books), which would accurately be described as "Parts One, Two and Three" of an unfolding narrative, rather than three standalone books. But I urge readers to start from the beginning with the first book, necessary to getting the full arc of the story, and certainly the most enjoyable way to experience it.
Georgia Rose is a skilled, engaging writer who pulls you into the story immediately, without an overabundance of hyperbole and fluff, which I particularly enjoyed. Her protagonist, Emma Grayson, is a young woman brought up in foster care, who's lost her only child by illness, her marriage by affair (her husband's), and her entire sense of self due to the critical mass of these devastating events. She takes a job as a stable master at a large and somewhat enigmatic manor out in the English countryside, looking both to find solitude and detach from life as she's known it, and this is where the story unfolds.
There is the requisite cast of characters that inspires immediate laying of bets as to who will be become her romantic interest (I guessed correctly!), but despite that unavoidably predictable element (these ARE romance novels!), Rose finds a way to roll out her story with a depth and detail that is unexpected. I particularly enjoyed the specificity with which she describes Emma's job as a stable master; the arcane details of caring for horses and their environs was not only educational and interesting, it contributed a very visceral backdrop for the plot, which was expertly interwoven throughout.
Another touching and thoughtful plot element was the emotional and very relatable journey Emma experiences in continuing to mourn her daughter. As readers, we could feel the loss and agony along with her, and Rose does an excellent job of bringing this in and out of the story without making the topic maudlin or manipulative. The impact of losing a child becomes a very salient part of Emma's character and the journey she's on, impacting the choices she makes, both good and less good, and we are always led to feel both empathetic and hopeful that she will traverse that loss to allow herself a happy life once again.
The other characters in the book, from the man she falls in love with, to the "noble couple" who own the Manor, to the other Manor staff, are individually defined, with specific character traits and compelling roles in the drama, and, again, Rose shows her skill in fleshing those out in ways that are rich in detail and personal narrative.
The thriller plot line (which I won't give away!) was unexpected and initially struck me as a bit larger-than-life (certainly the life we're set up to believe Emma will be living!), but once you hop on board and just decide to take this wild ride-- inclusive of international espionage and some nefarious characters up to no good--it's darkly suspenseful and quite the page-turner. Rose's imaginative twists and nail-biting turns are exciting and visual, and here is where a reader is obligated to read all three books to get the full spectrum of that storyline and its denouement.
Which is also true of the romantic side of this tale. Emma's slow opening up, of her heart, her trust, her willingness to once again embrace life and love, is tender and affecting, and we WANT her to get there. Rose pushes her character, sometimes to uncomfortable places, to force her face all the corners of her life, past and present, dark and light, allowing her to come into her own as a newly realized woman, and for the reader, it is a lovely journey.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series and recommend it to readers, even those who don't normally turn to romance...because it's certainly more than just that! Additionally, it's written by an author who obviously put a lot of care and attention into creating not only an engaging story, but a physical book put together with a professional touch, from the well-formatted interior to the beautiful covers, something I, for one, always appreciate!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2020I read the first book in this series some time ago and was pleased to find I still remembered the storyline. This is, I believe, because Goergia Roses’s Grayson series includes many ingredients I love: horses, dogs, countryside and a good element of action and suspense. I enjoyed this second book very much, especially the rollercoaster ride of danger dodging that draws the book to its conclusion. I like Grayson’s feisty character immensely and found I could relate to her easily when it came to her fears as well, always important for me. I admit I’m not a big fan of romance novels, but for me the action, adventure, excitement and rural setting made this an unputdownable read and I’ll be reading the final book in the series very soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2017Rollicking good fun, if a little wider focus on dangerous games than the first installment. I enjoyed the first so much I immediately bought the second to continue the fun, and was pleasantly surprised to find this one edgier than the first. Well written and plotted, the pace is fast and exciting again with a few twists and turns and only a tiny amount of eyerolling at exactly what money can buy in terms of lifestyle (that's said with affection). A lovely denouement to the main relationship, and a nice lead in to the final in the trilogy. Once again, I think this book could be read as a standalone (although as the backstory is kept to the bare essentials which I think is a good move, a small amount more detail may have been helpful if you hadn't read the first), but why would you want to? 😁 The final pages have whetted my appetite for more ... I'm off to read book three.
ETA The author's note underlines her decision to leave out backstory detail, which is fine with me, and with that note I urge you to read all three to get the full picture she has so nicely drawn.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2019I thoroughly enjoyed this romantic suspense! The story is rich with wonderful characters and gripping emotion. I was so relieved to have all 3 books available so I could go right to the next one. I found Emma to be so compassionate and strong, despite her past. She was truly reflective about trying to heal herself and move forward. She needed a strong man to challenge her and push her to be her best-self. Trent has that in spades. The suspense/mystery swirling around them enhances the story in the best way! Each book better than the last with the mystery revealed little by little keeping the reader on edge and wanting more. A must-read!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2014I eagerly anticipated the continuation of Emma's story and was not disappointed with Before the Dawn.
The story picks up right where we left Emma and all the others at the manor and quickly delves more into what really happens beneath the surface.
I don't want to give anything away with the plot but the story was suspenseful and held me captivated enough to finish the book in a few hours.
I really enjoyed this continuation of the story and am looking forward to the conclusion. There is one mystery from book one that wasn't uncovered in the second and I'm quite intrigued wondering what will happen. An enjoyable read and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2019Absolutely wonderful! Emma grew so immensely strong since book 1 I was as proud of her as if she were my own daughter. The storyline just keeps getting gritter and more thrilling as it goes forward. Georgia Rose is as her name a blossoming writer along the same lines as Nora Roberts and someone to definitely read time and time again.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Sequel That Doesn't Disappoint
This is terrific stuff.
Fans of the first of Georgia Rose's , "A Single Step" will not be disappointed in the slightest. Emma and Trent get closer, a bunch of mad Russians skanked by Cavendish and his secret band get angry and very vengeful, the kids get older, the horses more majestic and the setting more beautiful.
You probably do need to read the first book to understand what's going on - and believe me, that is no hardship - and I strongly recommend you do.
Women will adore Trent, the dark, brooding, Bond figure, emotionally damaged, possessive, unable to control his feelings to any extent, but once again, the star of the show is Emma, who gets visibly stronger and more assured as the novel goes on.
The middle section will surprise many readers as Emma's maturity as a character develops exponentially in the face of a threat to everything she holds dear, but equilibrium is restored in the final chapters which will warm the heart of Emma's many fans.
I loved the novel - Georgia is a master of pace and detail and there is nothing wasted here - its no-nonsense, suspenseful romance with an icing of thriller.
One complaint - what happened to the avuncular Carlton? I was quite looking forward to a random meaningless afternoon in the haybails between him and Emma, but he seemed to be phased out in favour of the (by comparison) rather earnest Trent.
Please bring him back in the much anticipated Book 3, Georgia!!
To conclude, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and heartily recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Georgia Rose Doesn't Disappoint!
I loved A Single Step and so was delighted when the sequel, Before the Dawn was released. All I can say is Georgia Rose doesn’t disappoint. She finds the perfect balance between giving us quick reminders about the characters without re-hashing too much, which means the story flows seamlessly and could easily be enjoyed as a standalone.
Emma Grayson’s life has moved on and she’s no longer the troubled individual she once was so, while we still get to enjoy her and Trent as a couple, this story is more action based than its prequel. The mystery of Melton Estate unfolds as it comes under threat from a group of Russian criminals. We get to know more about the other characters on the estate and when Cavendish, the estate owner, and his family are in danger, Emma comes to the rescue. I love the fact that Emma is able to credibly hold her own with the tough guys as she is in the peak of fitness from horse riding and an accomplished kick boxer.
For me though, Georgia Rose’s real skill as a writer is most evident in the way she gets her readers to actually feel the emotions of her characters. I found it incredibly moving when Emma accidentally meets her ex-husband and they lay the past to rest. Also when Turner, a young estate employee, is traumatised by his experiences, Rose allows us to share in his humiliation and pain.
Before the Dawn has a very happy and satisfying ending but Rose gives us just enough clues that the turbulent times aren’t over yet to ensure we’re anxiously awaiting the release of the final story in The Grayson Trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent second instalment of The Grayson Trilogy
There’s a marked increase in the action and pacing in the second of The Grayson Trilogy and I was hooked into the story from the beginning. Emma Grayson has survived the traumas life hurled at her in A Single Step and has gained in confidence and strength. She and Trent are learning to trust in each other as their relationship deepens although Trent, by Emma’s reckoning, is still overly protective and possessive. Her emotions are complicated but the dawning acceptance of her feelings is more apparent.
To all outside appearances Melton Manor is an agricultural farm, but the people who live and work there are involved in supporting Cavendish and Trent in their undercover operations for MI6. When Cavendish is targeted after he and Trent help to break up a Russian criminal organisation everyone is put on high alert. Circumstances, however , are about to throw them and the residents of Melton Manor into a perilous situation. When danger materializes Emma, Grace and the children are caught in the cross fire and Emma needs all her resources to protect those she holds dear.
The suspense and tension begin to build almost immediately with the impending threat, and increase as events unfold, escalating into a totally action packed sequence which paints vivid (and scary) images. Emma really shows what she’s made of and the huge leaps she’s made in personality and spirit. I love the way Emma and Trent’s characters are evolving, he trying to lessen his vigilance where Emma is concerned, while she is becoming less focused on being self-reliant and stubborn and is therefore able to accept more from Trent. She’s faced and come to terms with past losses which has made her stronger and able to commit to another relationship.
There are hints that all wasn’t quite as straight forward as first supposed with Emma’s childhood and adoptive parents, and an intriguing part of the attack on the manor is left unanswered, to be resolved in the third instalment of the trilogy. I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
