Steam punk fantasy, retelling of fairy tale, gripping, adventurous, love. Look no further, its here.
Cog wheels and mechanical objects, steam powered engines, thought provoking chapters, a fast paced gripping adventure...... this is what I let myself in for, when I delved into Black Ice by Julia Blake. Hisssssss, Pop! ...... Julia is extremely good at explaining how things work in her book, making you visualize the movement that turned even more real..I was introduced to ... alot? .... no not alot, more like a crew of character's.... so I just picked out just one that stood out to me, that won my heart. Eli - the youngster of the "seven Dwarvians" that has an uncomplicated mind of a child. Fiercely protected by his sister Kylah. He is loved and valued by the rest of the group and always included. He possess a gentle magic that summon small plants and animals to his hands, although a stutterer he comes across as an absolute sweetheart..What stole my heart was a quote that I thought was the creme de la creme of the book ....“Love can cross all barriers,” her mother told her, and smiled lovingly at her husband. “It can break down preconceptions and prejudices, and shine light into even the most determined of hearts.”.and then my heart exploded into so many pieces (in a good way, mind) of love and joy when I read the tale of .... the two brothers and the missing spade and a cake 😊😉.5 star rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.This book comes highly recommended by me - A fast paced steampunk fantasy/retelling of Snow White, for adventure lovers, fantasy lovers and fits the YA fantasy genre perfectly.

BLACK ICE is a wonderful retelling of the classic Snow White fairy tale in a new unique style of steampunk. I have always loved fairy tales but found it hard to absorb myself in retellings that just tell the same story. Black Ice was not what I expected. It blew me away.

The characters were so loveable and unique but still somehow showed the familiar character traits we all know and love from childhood. The Dwarvians stole my heart, especially Ronin, Eli, and Fae. I just loved the family dynamic between the seven remaining of the Dwarvian race. I wanted to be one of them.

Snow White was not just a weak and innocent maiden, which I really enjoyed. She was a very strong female lead. Though she holds the status of heir to House White, she is still humble, kind, good, and brave. But the evil force of the Power over her kingdom is unbearable, and she will need help to attain peace amoung her people if she is to accomplish becoming Queen.

This high paced steam punk story captured me at every turn of the page. So much action, magic, plot twists, and fun flying contraptions. I highly recommend this story to any fans of steampunk or the classic Snow White tale. Its a must read.

    Black Ice by Julia Blake

I have had so much fun reading this retelling of Snow White in Julia Blake’s, Black Ice. It all happens in an extraordinarily creative Steam Punk setting. Snow White is alive and fighting for her throne, but transformed into a heroine whose modern sensibilities you will love; a young woman, pure of spirit, sheltered in some ways due to her life at the castle, but savvy and cautious having grown up in a world of deceit, hypocrisy, and Machiavellian behavior; all culminating in an attempted assassination on her life.

Lost in the woods, running for her life, she will be found and killed by either her own family or the Contratulum, an evil organization with advanced mechanics, hungry for power and planning a takeover patiently for many years. If she does not find shelter and help she will die. What she finds is not 7 small dwarfs, but 7 members of the nearly extinct race of Dwarvians. They are very human in most ways, have powers and skills that will surprise you and they are fiercely loyal to each other and soon to Snow. As the story unfolds, their true relationship to Snow White is nothing short of mind-blowing. Each of the 7 Dwarvians have distinct and well developed characters and I came to care or love them all. They are superbly conceived.
This is a completely unique and creative retelling. It still carries the essence of the original fairy tale but it is a modern adventure told in beautiful language that is a blend of fairytale descriptions and modern expectations. The setting is gorgeous, this Steam Punk world of Blake’s, and the author’s world building is so satisfying. There are amazing airships, road cars and hot baths and wonderful outfits! There is the love story, of course, modern, but romantic and passionate. There is scrying, the ability to tell the future or observe an individual from afar in a mirror or clear surface, witchcraft and a continuous stream of intrigue to take you right to the glorious ending.

This was my first book by Julia Blake, and I can say for sure that it will not be my last! From start to finish, I couldn't put it down.

I was intrigued from the start by Black Ice's description. Even though fairytale retellings don't usually grab my attention, the steampunk angle sounded quite original. Ms. Blake reeled me in further with the gorgeous character profiles she posted on social media...and next thing you know, there I was, attached to my eReader far into the wee hours. Thankfully, she more than delivered on the story she promised to tell.

Every aspect of this book worked for me. The action started early and kept me invested throughout. I loved how Ms. Blake built a fantasy world with just the right amount of magic, clockwork devices, intrigue, and romance. Her characters felt real and well-developed, with natural, believable chemistry. On top of that, the plot had plenty of twists, making for an incredibly entertaining read.

As many of you know, I don't often stray from the romance genre in my reading - but this book sure made it worth my while! Tons of fun and highly recommended.

Epic Snow White Retelling in Steampunk fashion.
You have all the elements of a steampunk fantasy with the familiarity of Snow White's fairy tale.
The middle of the book has your emotions changing every chapter. You go on a journey if uncertainty, joy, immense sadness, immense happiness followed by so much angst.
Blake keeps you reading this beast if a book. It is put together with such attention and care.
Snow is stuck in a position where she has no one to trust, until she is taken in by Dwarvians.
Watching Snow grow into herself and her confidence is a journey in itself.
This book has it all, romance, War, magic, airships, and so much comedy it will have you laughing out loud.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes fairy tale retellings and steampunk fantasy.

I bought Black Ice by Julia Blake about two years ago. Please do not judge how long it took to read it finally. I had and still have a huge to-be-read pile by Indie Authors. I am happy I savoured it because when I did sit down to read this fantastic adventure, I didn't want to stop reading it. From the beginning, it captivated me and brought me into a spin of the author's take on Snow White. I am pretty sure I growled at my husband when he tried asking me a question when I was reading. Julia Blake is an exquisite writer. After reading 473 pages in just a few days, I wanted the worlds, characters and pages to continue. The steampunk visuals are extraordinary, and the weaving tale unfolds beautifully. It's one of my top reads for 2023.

Well, now that really was a nice surprise! Normally I don't read fairytale retellings because the story is not exactly novel, so what's the point? However, I had Black Ice on my kindle and I'm determined not to spend money on more books this year when I have 'a few' already on my kindle so I decided to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. Julia Blake's Black Ice is absolutely brilliant. It's a completely new story that only loosely resembles the story of snow white. The world is completely different, extremely well imagined and expertly brought to life by Blake's masterful use of the English language. The characters are enchanting and endearing and I ended up so wrapped up in their lives that I shed more than the odd tear. My husband actually asked if I was OK several times over (Julia - he might have mentioned being unhappy with you for making me cry!!). Overall, this was a wonderful read! I wish I'd read it when I first got it, but I don't even remember when I got it. Bravo, Julia!

    Black Ice, by Julia Blake
First thoughts. I confess, approached this book with a slight feeling of trepidation. Julia Blake can definitely write, and she can write in a way that I enjoy. From the evidence I have - two books now - she has absolutely no problems persuading her readers to keep turning pages. But … Black Ice is a fairytale retelling, and there are so many of those about that I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it. Would it be a bit too mainstream for weird little old me? I wasn’t sure. On the plus side, if it had to be a fairytale retelling, Snow White was the right one to pick as it was a story I loved as a kid. It’s also a long book. I usually read ebooks but I have seen this one in the flesh and it’s mahoosive! Would it be too long? Could I make it to the end? Would I enjoy it?

    The short answer is, yes.

Most fantasy books are about taking someone else’s idea and giving it a twist that makes it special and something truly the author’s own (I didn’t quite clock that when I first started reading fantasy). Blake has done an absolutely cracking job this. There’s enough of the original story; Snow White’s physical description, there’s a wicked step mother and a poisoned apple, and even seven … not dwarves. They are actually Dwarvians; the last of a noble and persecuted race. They have technology which is mostly steam and early petrol powered. They are open and accepting, despite having suffered great hardship.

There is tension between the rather backward kingdom of House White with the King and Queen’s fear and jealousy of the technology the Dwarvians have developed. Except is it the King and Queen? Or is it the dark, sinister forces of the (apparently) technophobic Contratulum feeding the hatred? Who are the Contratulum? What do they want? Why have they wiped out the Dwarvians? What are they plotting? Can Princess Snow stand up to them?

Snow White herself is brilliant. I was worried she might follow the vogue of sparkly princesses. Oh no, she wasn’t that. I loved her. Snow can look after herself. Sure there are gaps in her knowledge, I mean, she’s a pampered princess and she doesn’t know how to boil a kettle, but she is as brave and courageous as anyone would wish and she’s prepared to muck in and have a go at anything. She’s humble enough to be open to change and willing to learn. A bit of a steampunk princess Leia in some respects. Having been carted off to the woods by her mother’s guards who have been instructed to ensure she disappears, Snow escapes the murder attempt and happens upon Ronin, one of the handful of remaining Dwarvians. Lost and alone as she is, he looks after her and she sets out to reclaim her throne and free her people from the iron grip of the Contratulum.

There are many themes in this book, inclusion, diversity, friendship, redemption and a little bit of love. None of them is laboured or clunky. Once I started reading, I was soon completely engrossed and didn’t notice as the chapters whizzed by. Oh and the beginning is an absolute belter by the way, text book start-with-the-action stuff but without the usual flashbacks required to explain them afterwards. Really, golden.

Having thrown you in at the deep end, the story keeps up a fast pace as Snow seeks friends and allies and steps up to lead them. I started reading and without realising I was completely sucked into the narrative and didn’t really notice much going on around me until I bobbed up at the other end a couple of days later, the book having come to a very satisfying ending.

However, it wasn’t just the story I enjoyed. There is some great world building here, not so much information that I was swamped, just enough to set the scene and let me imagine the rest for myself. The plot is fast and realistic enough … things are not an easy ride for Snow. But it also has enough moments of respite for me to wander round and marvel at the mental scenery. I also loved that there was a strong back story to every character, which made them solid and real. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read. Recommended.
