Blackbird: Age Gap, Hurt/Comfort, Break His Heart to Save Him, College Setting Adult Contemporary MM Romance (IF I FELL Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Sequel to Hide Your Love Away (If I Fell Series, book 2)

Timmy and Cole’s angsty love story continues…

Last year, in Timmy Hale’s junior year at Edgewater University, he set his romantic sights on Colton “Cole” Ledger—a burly and sometimes over-protective dormitory maintenance man. Cole soon had it bad for sleek and snarky Timmy too, and—despite a bumpy road (a frenzied stalker and an uncooperative son)—before year’s end they’d found love. Now, in Timmy’s senior year, the couple has left the dormitory behind. Cole is back to running his own custom construction company, and they’ve turned an antique Victorian home into a love nest. For a while, life is good.

But insta-love comes at a cost, and for Timmy and Cole it’s steep. Cole’s doubts haunt him: he’s almost certain he’s too old for Timmy, and that he’s pushing him into a life he’ll eventually resent, keeping him from spreading his newfound wings and taking flight toward his best future. Acting on his fears, Cole pressures Timmy to accept an internship in Manhattan—far from the home they’ve built together. He means well, but Timmy feels like a baby bird kicked out of the nest too soon.

Tensions rise until fear, resentment, and desire draw Timmy and Cole into explosive conflict. When the dust settles, will Timmy wing away like a young blackbird, or return to nest with Cole in their happy garden home?

For maximum enjoyment,
Blackbird is best read after Hide Your Love Away.

Stay tuned for Book 3 in the IF I FELL Series, Come Together, coming in January, 2022.

This is Book #2 in this IF I FELL SERIES. Cole is older and set in his ways. Timmy is a little younger than Cole's son Robbie. Problems arise when these two need to be honest with each other. Because neither has the courage, they let assumptions lead them astray. This broke my heart. I loved this true portrayal of how things left unsaid can cause ruin to the most important things in your life. This also has a stellar epilogue. MIA KERICK has the AMAZING ability to crush and put things back together better than before. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS IF I FELL SERIES!!!!!!!!

This picks up the summer after the last book ended. This book frustrated me more than the first because not only is there still a lot of plot with little relationship building but the MCs came off as weaker this time around, especially Cole. Cole let himself be bullied into an opinion by his son rather than listening to his partner. Timmy and Cole are sweet together but I wish they communicated better and stood up for themselves more. Once Cole knew he made a mistake and everyone in the house especially Beverly pointed it out I really felt that he should have been man enough to speak with Timmy and I started to lose confidence in the character. I don't like weak older men.

I am glad this ended with them getting a HEA however I think someone needed to kick some sense into Robbie because he acted like a jealous 12 year old rather than a fully grown adult.

3.5 rounded to 4. Blackbird is the second book in Mia Kerick’s If I Fell series and is definitely not a standalone. I have mixed feelings about this one. It’s well written, but it made me so mad! I get that we need to see Timmy and Cole grow as a couple, but this book is so frustrating. At the beginning of the story, Timmy and Cole are settled and happy. They’ve purchased a beautiful house, renovated it, and are surrounded by their friends. Thanks to Cole’s meddling son Robbie, Timmy gets selected for an internship at a large PR firm in New York. He doesn’t want to go, but Cole pushes him into it. He’s worried that he’ll hold Timmy back from pursuing his dreams and that Timmy will eventually get bored with him. Timmy finally has love and security, but he’s worried that Cole will think he’s too young and inexperienced to be a true partner in both business and life. Jealous of their relationship, Robbie feeds both of their insecurities. They’re both unnecessarily miserable for most of the book, and their problems could easily be solved if they both communicated with each other. They learn these lessons by the end of the book and attempt to establish boundaries with Robbie and seem to be on the right track as a couple, but the conflict doesn’t warrant an entire novel. I really hope they get their happy ending in the third book.

This is Book 2 of the "If I Fell" series, a sequel to Book 1 ("Hide Your Love Away") and it continues the story of Cole and Timmy. In Book 1 we saw how they fell in love and developed a relationship in spite of all the obstacles against them. And remember, aside from the age difference, there was also a perceived "class" difference between them, Cole was a "simple janitor" at the college where Timmy was a student in his senior year. In this Book, we already know that there is no class difference, Cole is back to his regular job as an engineer, although the age difference can't be ignored. However Cole and Timmy are building a life together and seem to be happy. But some doubts creep up and Cole thinks he's holding Timmy back. He encourages Timmy to leave and follow the route that is best for him (an important internship), but Timmy thinks Cole is tired of him and is sending him away. Misunderstandings arise, obstacles crop up again, and once again the path of true love does not run smooth. Will they be able to fight through all the stumbling blocks and reach their HEA? The story doesn't end here. A Book 3 has been promised, and I'm really looking forward to it.

You must read 'Hide Your Blood Away' before you read 'Blackbird.'

The complex relationship among Timmy, Robbie and Cole is further explored in this selection from the 'If I Fell' series.

Robbie's ability to share his father's love is still in question. Will he be able to stop himself from interfering? Timmy and Cole love each other 'to distraction' and their housemates are wonderful as they find their footing in the 'adult' world.

The pain that Cole and Timmy feel is so well written that you almost absorb it into your body and feel each conversation as though the words were physical blows.

Mia, once again, doesn't disappoint. I'm so glad I discovered her. Her view of the world enriches mine.

There is so much angst in this book you can't help but feel sorry for Timmy and Cole. It took so much for them to build their relationship and to have it destroyed by jealousy, misunderstanding and lack of trust took a toll on them, physically and mentally. Timmy and Cole are having the perfect relationship and the time of their lives until Timmy had to take an internship in another state.
The move not only put a strain on their relationship but also on Cole's son and their friends also. Once these two are able to sit down and talk they get their happily ever after. The book is filled with angst, sweet, romantic, some intense moments and I enjoyed it.

I felt this book was much more about Robbie's selfishness (which I thought got resolved in the last book) than Cole and Timmy's relationship and I felt uncomfortable throughout most of the story. Cole and Timmy unfortunately took Robbie's bait and it hurt them but they were able to work everything out. I hope the next book gives Cole and Timmy a solid HEA with no more childish manipulations.

MM, Age Gap, Hurt/Comfort, College Setting, Contemporary Romance. Easy to read page-turner that needs to be read in series order for full understanding as the series follows the same couple over a period of time. A great read that takes you on an emotional journey as insecurity and fear play a massive part of the story as their fears are used to try and cause issues between them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Angsty May/December romance. Book 2 in a series.

Phew, what a rollercoaster! This is more angsty than the previous book, the storyline is full of it. Be warned, it really wrings you dry, before you get to the smiles at the end.

The story's a testimony to what loving someone is all about, and what lengths someone will go to do what they feel is right for the person they love, even if they may ultimately suffer for it. I could feel the heartbreak, despair, anger, and hopelessness, of both Cole and Tim, but could also100% feel their love for the other throughout it all. Also, I must add here how selfish Robbie was.

As per usual, Mia's writing is first class! Her world building makes me feel as though I am right there with the characters. My only whinge is, that I felt it was occasionally a teeny weeny bit on the melodramatic side. Other than that, an emotional read, full of feels. Looking forward to the next book. 4.5 stars.
