Sherlock Holmes receives a letter from a vicar's wife in Staffordshire, telling him that she has seen the ghost of a young woman who was raped and murdered some sixty years previously. The body was carried up a flight of steps from the canal where shere it was found, and local legend has it that the unfortunate woman's ghost can be seen, and that the steps are still stained with her blood.

The great detective takes on the case, believing that the sightings are due to natural causes, and that a darker mystery lies at the bottom of the Bloody Steps.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"one of the world's leading proponents of Sherlock Holmes pastiches" (The Scotsman)
"one of the world's leading Sherlock Holmes authors."
(The Black Country Bugle)

" ...good pastiches of the Sherlock stories are hard to come by. I think Mr. Ashton does an extraordinary job of making me feel like this could have been part of the original Canon."
" For those who love Sherlock Holmes, you will love these pastiches by Hugh Ashton. Engaging and written in Conan Doyle's style."
" 'The game is afoot' lives on in the writings of Hugh Ashton. If Sherlock Holmes has intrigued you in the past, gather together around the dispatch box of John H. Watson series. Get them all and dig into a welcome return to Sherlock and his cases."
" The last products of the Dispatch Box once owned by John Watson, M.D. are superbly crafted, including two stories that Dr. Watson transcribed from Holmes' notes and turned into a story of some worth."
" There is a consistency of voice and the stories ring true to the originals. Ashton has become one of the best writers of Sherlock Holmes stories, and if you are a fan, this is a must."
" When trying to emulate Doyle, Hugh Ashton is at the top of the list."

About the Author

After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1977, Hugh moved between various jobs before ending up in the field of IT. His interests took him to Japan in 1988 on a two-year contract, to work as a technical writer. Twenty-eight years later, he returned to the UK with his wife Yoshiko, to live in the Midlands cathedral city of Lichfield, the setting for his Sherlock Holmes mysteries, "The Lichfield Murder", close to Rugeley, the setting for "The Bloody Steps". As well as this title, he published a dozen volumes of Sherlock Holmes adventures with Inknbeans Press of California (now sadly defunct, with the titles now published by j-views Publishing), many based on the "untold adventures" referenced in the canon, and all in the style of the originals, which has led some critics to describe him as "the reincarnation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" and one of the most authentic of the current crop of pastiche writers. Like ACD, he has also written contemporary thrillers, vintage science fiction, and historical adventures, as well as a critically acclaimed volume of short stories about the older generation in Japan, "Tales of Old Japanese". However, he does not play cricket, and though he once grew a moustache, it is by now no more than a fading memory.

Just finished this and it was a very enjoyable read from one of the greatest Sherlock pastiche writers. Well constructed and true to the form which Hugh has certainly mastered in his previous Holmes writings. I own them all but will have to hesitate on future purchases as $14. for a short story is just too much, no matter how good.

3.0 out of 5 stars SHORT NOVELLA
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 23, 2020
I quite enjoyed this book but I did find some editing mistakes and the plot was rather too predictable. Great effort though in trying to write like Conan Doyle. However, it lacks atmosphere/ historical feel.... but then it is told in only 56 pages... I looked at the other novellas... hardly novels... by this author and found they too are very short for the price. It would be better, I think, if he put the lot in one economical book/collection... fairer on any reader.
