ALMOST HUMAN ~ The Second Trilogy

Volume 1: Born to Blood

Alyson used to think that vampires were almost human; that is, until she became one. Finally consenting to be lovingly turned by her boyfriend Mattie, Allie has come to possess traits and powers previously unknown among vampire kind. Now Allie seeks the help of the elder vampire Cain, to discover not only what she is capable of, but why.

Still healing from heartbreak over Cain, Felicity looked forward to a nice, human relationship, but dating the son of a vampire hunter, and having a psychic bond with one of his prey makes life far from normal. How can Ben and Felicity discover the truths of love when they are forced to live with so many secrets?

Someone has contrived a diabolical plan to control destiny, and blood may not only be the catalyst for change, but also the master of manipulation behind it. Is rebirth as a vampire always at the discretion of an undead sire, or sometimes is one simply born to blood?

*Haven't read the others? You can still read this book! It's book 1 of this trilogy.

*ALMOST HUMAN is a series of successive trilogies, not stand-alone books. Each trilogy is self-contained enough to be read alone as a 3 book set, but the story unfolds chronologically, and the characters do continue from one trilogy to the next. Main storyline closure is in each 3rd book, but there are also story-ties leading from one trilogy to the next in the series.

Captivating story! The engaging plot flowed perfectly through this remarkable novel, converging many different genres, and I adored the character development. The author never ceases to thrill!
--Gigi Lupo - Reviewer - ParanormalRomanceGuild.com

Nowak wraps readers into her story, to live it with the characters. I love her attention to detail, development and discovery. I didn't think the ALMOST HUMAN series could get even better, but it has!

I enjoyed the first trilogy of Almost Human: the characters, the romance, the action all wrapped up in a small college town that read like a TV drama. I didn't really expect anything from the next book other than to be fully entertained, and Born to Blood did not disappoint me! As the characters have grown from their experiences in the first trilogy, the storyline itself has matured along with them.

Born to Blood focuses more on Alyson and her transition into vampirism by her lover, Mattie, whom we get to know better through his past. We get to see how Felicity and Ben are coming along, as well understanding Bernard's story, Ben's vampire-hunter father. And this particular fangirl was happy to continue Cain's story: where he is, how he's coping without Felicity, who he's helping now... and if Cain's around, you can bet Sindy won't be far! Readers also get to meet new, mysterious vamps who seem to have their own agendas, and old ones from the past show up making you wonder for what reason and why now? But really this book is about Allie, because when she transitions, she's not your average vamp.. so she and Mattie seek answers from Cain who has his ideas, but in turn seeks counsel from an ancient who can or cannot be trusted... And from there the plot thickens!

This trilogy is a whole new level from the first, so intricate with it's details and storytelling that I soaked it up like a sponge. We dive deeper into the author's world of Vampiredom with it's histories, societal rules, social classes and the like. I begin to see how Ms Nowak is baiting her readers with hints here and there of something much bigger on the horizon. A pretty good hook as this reader will be patiently waiting for the next book!

First off, I would just like to say that Melanie is an incredibly gifted, talented writer. Why is this woman not published by one of the big publishing companies? Is it her preference to publish her own work? I don't get it. The big guys are really missing out on an incredible talent.

That said, this story just keeps getting better. I love that Melanie focused mostly on Mattie and Allie throughout this story. After reading the first trilogy, I was very intersted in learning more about Mattie and Allie's relationship, her change and how she will fair as a vampire and what a vampire she is.

In the first trilogy I absolutely loathed Sindy, but surprisingly, she is starting to grow on me. She is more than just a pain in the ass, there really is a lot more to her emotionally and physically. I don't want to give anything away but there is a big reveal which is a shocker.

I love Ben and Felicity. I think they are adorable together. However, I hope Ben does not get hurt in all this. Felicity seems to still be somewhat conflicted about Cain. It is true that she loves Ben, but there are some unresolved major feelings there. I also love Felicity's relationship with Allie and how they are able to communicate with each other. Allie has some amazing abilities that I am looking forward to finding out more about in the next story.

Last, but not least is Cain. I adore him and my heart goes out to this poor lonely guy with a broken heart. I am so torn between he and Ben. I wish Cain could have Felicity back without hurting Ben, but obviously someone is going to be hurt in the end. I can't wait until Felicity and Cain finally see each other again and how that will go down. Cain is my favorite character in this story. This guy is like an Angel and I love how he feels connected to God even though he is a vampire. I would love for him to finally be happy. I can't wait to read more about what's going on with his maker, Maribeth and her little boy toy. There is definitely something sinister with these two and their intentions.

Overall, this was an incredibly refreshing take on a vampire love story. Melanie is true storyteller. You as the reader actually feel the emotions and feelings that the characters are experiencing. This is especially so with Cain. That, I believe, is the mark of a truly gifted author. I recommend this to all who love a good romance, not just a paranormal.

I really enjoyed this book and would definitely read the next book in the series. I was a little disappointed that the author waited so long to get to the Ben and Felicity storyline. This is a building book and I excited to see where the story will go next. I would have liked if the author gave more history on the different breeds of vampires and their abilities than the drawn out description of Mattie and Allie's relationship. I felt she oversold their love story. You won't be disappointed by the series. I do think reading the first series would be a huge benefit. I enjoy the writer's flow and her point of view. I get a good sense of each character and can easily differentiate between them. I read about 100 books a year and this series is one of my top favorites. Keep it up Melissa - I love it!!

I absolutely loved Born to Blood. I stumbled across the almost human trilogy on my Kindle and was immediately hooked on the characters. I couldn't wait for the second trilogy and Melanie didn't disappoint. She is a very talented writer and I love her writing style.

I won't try to provide details of the story - so many others have done that both her and at Melanie's website. Just know that this is a story (series) worth reading. You will love the characters and the story line. I highly recommend this book, as well as the first trilogy.

I read on her website that she has planned 12 books in this series. The good news is that this is only the 4th book. The bad news is - this is only the 4th book. I don't know how I will be patient enough to wait for all 12 books, but I know that I'll be checking her website often for the progress.

Thanks Melanie for a great story...please write fast :-)

I could not read this fast enough! The story has taken an unexpected turn and I am hooked! I cannot wait to see where this is all going? I am speculating as to how this is all going to turn out? I loved this book and it made me hungry for more!
I think there are certainly a few more books to get out of the series, and I wish they were all written and ready for me read right now. This book is just a fantastic piece of escapism, and I for one do not want to go back to reality! Thank you Melanie, bring on the next book!
