Bounty (Kaliya Sahni Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 2,639 ratings

They call me Executioner, but I’m much more than that.

They call me dangerous, irresponsible, and antagonistic, but they only know the half of it.

My reputation is larger than the desert I live in and I’ve spent decades cultivating it.

When a friend asks me to look into a supernatural bounty on a human, I find myself diving head first into a conspiracy that has been in the shadows for nearly a decade. I’m too curious to get out before it too late, a fatal character flaw that I should have been more careful about. But the truth beckons me and I can never resist a good mystery. Especially when the stakes are high.

There’s no turning back, no putting the lid back on the box.

I’m Kaliya Sahni, a Tribunal Executioner, bounty hunter, and the last nagini. In my world, the stakes are all or nothing.

And I don’t like to lose.

The Kaliya Sahni series is an Urban Fantasy Romance series.

I’ve read all the Jacky Leon series by Banet and couldn’t put them down until the last one. Her supernatural worlds are interesting and characters vivid. The plots have many crisis points to keep your interest focused but the plot is never a straight path with unexpected twists and turns. I enjoy her characters’ personal struggles with their romantic and political environments. Good balanced blend of description, action, and dialogue. Kaliya Shani series begins with all those attributes. Very hard to stop reading. Will begin the next book immediately!

    But of course, rounding rules.

At times, the book was very hard to follow because of the writing style. Sometimes I had to go back a page or two to even figure out who was talking to who. Other times, it seemed like too much information at once, so I had to reread several paragraphs to get a good visualization in my head. There were small switches in person (1st person about 98% of the time, but I noticed some 3rd person that was hard to ignore).

What I didn’t like the most was the disconnect I felt with most of the characters. I couldn’t understand Kaliya’s temper a lot of the time, and I felt like I couldn’t empathize with her in the end during the final fight scene. I felt for Raphael, and I understood him the most, but the mystery around him is almost…annoying. Way too many questions and not enough answers. It left me pretty unsatisfied. Cassius, well, he was a tiny mystery to me too. I didn’t care about him and felt like he was an unnecessary addition. I feel like I only feel that way because of his relationship with Kaliya; ex-lover, uncomfortable, weird at times, and somewhat wishy-washy. Wish-washy meaning that he seemed to try way too hard not to care about Kaliya, but we all know he does (as a friend). Maybe more background on their relationship will help me out.

However, on the other hand I felt like the book was weirdly rushed. The entire book was over a span of maybe 3 days or so. Or maybe I got lost along the way?

I say all of that to say I still enjoyed the book and finished it in a 24 hour span of time. I enjoyed the story line, and I enjoyed the idea of Kaliya being a naga; a super cool choice, in my opinion. I will continue the series, and hopefully it’s only up from here.

This is a spin-off sequel to another series by this author. However it barely mentions the other book and I haven’t read the other series so I can totally vouch that you do not need to read the other series to read this one. At most reading the others may give you some background into the tribunal characters, but that is completely unnecessary to this as the tribunal itself doesn’t make much of an appearance in this book. I don’t want to say more than that as I don’t want to spoil anything. The FMC is a stubborn, hard-headed, “I don’t need anyone” kind of girl. Even after her long life she still seems to need to prove that she doesn’t need anyone and can do it all on her own. It makes her a great reluctant hero. I really interested to read more and see where this goes and to see how her relationships develop with those around her.

Kaliya is such an intriguing and fierce character, but she does have a few vulnerable moments. Kaliya is one of 9 remaining nagini (snake shifter) and the only female nagini, which essentially makes her the leader of her race. She has been through a lot, but has made herself into the Tribunals Executioner, which has the added benefit of allowing her to search for her parents killer. She is asked to look into a contracted hit, and her life gets turned upside down. She has a connection she wasn’t expecting and really doesn’t want. This is a slow build story. Kaliya has really only had one mission in life and that is not related to romance. Rafael has been on the run for 5 years, and pretty much hates what he has seen of the supernatural world and anything connected with it. He has been changed after being held captive and experimented on. I felt for Rafael, although his anger towards all supernaturals irritated me a few times. I am excited to see how their relationship develops and find out what he is :) Bounty is set in the same world as the Jacky Leon books, but you do not have to have read the Leon books to read Bounty. There are a couple vague nods to Jacky, but I don’t think they would stand out to someone who hasn’t read them. I do like that Hasan pops up, and shakes things up at the end. I can’t wait for a July to see what happens in next for Kaliya, Rafael, and their friends!

If you haven’t read the other stories in the Tribunals, read these first. Then go read the others.
I’m sorry this storyline ended but I know we shall see most everyone again.

I like a strong, female heroines and this one is, but isn’t. The main character is supposed to be very feared by all the bad guys, but it’s difficult to believe that when she gets in what should be mild situations for someone with her reputation, but is easily overwhelmed. The scene where they are at her house and the villains attack - she’s easily put in a tail spin after we’ve read, earlier, how fortified her house is and how only 3 living people know where it is—but this guy finds it in about an hour?
The scene where she first meets Raphael and he gets the drop on her with a gun...if she’s easily subdued by a guy with a gun, how is she not dead already?
I enjoyed reading the book - but some of these holes you could drive a semi truck through and that bugged me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelming

I did not like this book. The conversations between the protagonist and the male lead (her supposed eligible mate) were juvenile and petty for the most part. The characters were flat without any learning arc and I did not grow to like any of them. It seemed as if the writing was rushed, which is apparent with the lacklustre plot and characters. There seems to be a lack of time and effort put into developing these characters which reflects in the writing, which is shabby and all over the place. I almost set the book aside thrice before I made myself read it, hoping it takes a turn for the better. It didn’t. After Jacky Leon, I expected better. This was disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Spin Off Urban Fantasy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 14, 2020
This book is set in the same universe as the Jacky Leon books that I have enjoyed so much, by this author. KN Banet is the pen name Kristen Banet is using for her Urban Fantasy books.

Kaliya is a Tribunal Executioner. The Tribunal is the only ruling body the supernatural world has and the are set up to prevent the exposure of the supernatural to humans, beyond what little is already known. They mainly enforce the various treaties in place between the species as the species usually deal with problems within their own race without getting the Tribunal involved.

Kaliya is the last female naga alive and as such is one of the two leaders of her race. She is a loner and is often bad tempered and unpleasant to deal with, but I loved her character, despite her many and various flaws. She has very few friends, but one of them reaches out to her to find out about a bounty that has been raised to capture a human, which is pretty unusual for a supernatural bounty. Her curiosity is piqued and she agrees to look into the matter, and she finds much more than she bargained for.

This book is to be the first in a series of 6 books and the set up of this first one is exceptional. This author proves time and again with each knew book that she is the master of the set up. She grabs hold of your attention from page one of a book and doesn’t let up until the last page of the last book in the series is read. With using The Tribunal universe again, there is already a lot of work in place for her to draw on when setting up this series, but you don’t need to read the Jacky Leon books to understand the set up.

I liked that Kaliya is prickly and has many enemies. She is defensive and sharp when prodded. However, she is strong, loyal, intelligent and determined. Her character as well as all others in the book are well thought out and have depth. I love hearing all about them.

This book does not end on a cliff hanger but there are lots of questions left unanswered, which is why it’s unsurprising that this is intended to be the first book of six. This book is such a great set up that I can’t wait to read what this author has in store for us next.

This book is definitely worth a read, and if you haven’t read the Jacky Leon books, I’d recommend those books too.
