Friendzoned (The Busy Bean) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 278 ratings

When Murphy Landon, the New York socialite, runs off to Vermont with her bruised reputation and stylish wardrobe in the trunk of a used car, it’s the first time in her life she’s dared to turn her back on her high-society parents.

Used to grabbing a gourmet coffee whenever the urge strikes, Murphy finds herself on the other side of the counter, fumbling strangers’ orders...until a sinfully handsome thirty-three year old version of Ben Rooney from high school walks in.

The pair met years ago at a prestigious boarding school and became friends, but only behind closed doors. She’d been a spoiled brat, and he was a football player on scholarship. Ben tried to hide his crush on her, and Murphy set firm boundaries. After a prom night gone wrong, they’d gone their separate ways.

Now their circumstances are reversed. Ben is a successful surgeon. He’s come a long way from his parents’ humble maple syrup business. And Murphy is pouring his coffee? Is this a joke?

His first thought is that she should drive her gorgeous self right back to New York, where she can’t possibly break his heart. His second one is deep concern. His third thought is he wants a do-over of prom night. A very adult one…

With plenty of secrets between them, copious pure maple syrup, and a hippy-dippy sidekick, Ben and Murphy are in for a wild and sticky ride.

She's been known to turn up the angst like cranking up the heat in the dead of winter. A devout coffee drinker and doughnut eater, Rachel spends way too many hours in local coffee shops, downing the aforementioned goodies while she plots her ideas. Her tales may all come with a side of angst and naughtiness, but end as lusciously as her treats. When she isn't writing, she can be found courtside, tweeting about hoops as her son plays, or walking around the house wearing earplugs while her other son, the drummer, bangs away.

Ben grew up poor, until he wasn’t. Murphy was a socialite, until she wasn’t. Ben came back to Vermont a doctor and a coder. Murphy left New York and landed in Vermont. But now their roles were reversed. Both struggled living the life that was no longer in existence. Boy, it was hard for both of them. Doing their best, their previous lives would surface periodically. Ben always loved Murphy. They went to high school together. She liked him, but had to keep up the persona of her life, but in private she could be herself. They get together in Vermont, work through their struggles, and end up together. But this is just touching the surface of this story. Lots of patience in this book, lots of steam and lots of love.

Written in dual first person POV. Can be read as a standalone but it does mention characters from previous books. The dialogue/text seems stilted at times. The author could use some help with transitions. Decent amount of sexy times but they were shorter (abrupt) than expected. Not a complete “fade to black” but some things were definitely skipped.

Besides the things mentioned above, my biggest problem was with Murphy. She’s in her 30s and has not lived at home for a while so it annoyed me that she completely cowers to her parents. Also, in the first “big fight” that the MCs have, her reaction is completely ridiculous and it annoyed me that Ben apologized at all. Also, Murphy needs to learn to listen - he said that he wanted her for the long haul, yet Murphy thinks she’s been “friend zoned”. He even said this after some kissing and followed it with more kissing.

Overall, I’m glad that I read it but I wish that I could have borrowed it in KU instead of buying it. Also, I’m not sure if my rating is a little skewed because the previous book was not very good and I read this one right after.

Great storyline! I really wanted to give more stars but just couldn’t. It’s definitely 3 positive stars not negative.
3 stars because editing should have been better and the writing seemed to be missing pieces. But instead of an intuitive story, the writer left a little too much open ended. Character development became redundant.

Despite that, I really liked how the characters had history and had to learn to overcome the negative parts of that history for their HEA.

Rachel Blaufeld consistently delivers unputdownable romance stories. Relationships much like life are messy, and Friendzoned gives us that in spades. I adored the real and raw emotions this story strongly invoked, wading in the syrupy ambiguity through their sticky flaws.

I'm always a sucker for a second-chance romance and this one captivated me right from the first page. I really loved the emotional complexity of these two characters. Ben and Murphy are total opposites with a ton of baggage and loads of emotional damage. To watch their characters grow throughout the story is both inspiring and heartwarming.

Friendzoned left me thirsty for more. A great book with several story lines that supported one another and stood on their own. The characters made me invested and I was rooting for them and their businesses. I want to go to Vermont and drink a cup at the Busy Bean, have a cupcake from Gigi, honey and maple syrup. My nails also coincidentally match the background color of my kindle which seems so appropriate.

Spoilers ahead: I wanted to like it, but I really struggled to get through this story and its definitely not a keeper for me.

I found it really difficult to connect with Murphy and Ben and found myself skimming through the pages, hoping to find something to catch my interest. Honestly, I was more interested in the secondary characters than the main couple - I kept wondering if we would see a romance between Brenna and Scott or if Hunnie was really in competition with Murphy to catch Ben's interest.

The conflict seemed forced, Murphy's parents were caricatures of one percenters, and I could not figure out the Brooklyn twist at the end. there was very little humor, no zippy/steamy dialogue between the hero/heroine and it was hard to believe they were a HEA. I had no interest in downloading the extra epilogue, something I have enjoyed with the other books. It felt like the world of True North was very watered down in this book.

Friendzoned is a friends to lovers romance that is also a bit about starting over and finding yourself. Murphy comes from a wealthy family, but she hasn't always felt comfortable with her upbringing and her parents have always had extremely high expectations related to social standing and what they want from her and with regard to what they think is acceptable or not. She finds herself in Vermont and working at the Busy Bean after needing a change from her old life in New York.

Murphy runs into Ben, a friend and classmate from high school, when he comes into the Busy Bean one day for coffee. Initially things are a little bit awkward, but one thing leads to another and their friendship picks back up and then all the feelings that neither acted on so many years before can no longer be held back.

I really liked Ben and Murphy together for the most part, but did struggle with Murphy's character in relation to her parents and the major conflict with Ben in the story. My heart broke for Ben and it was really difficult to sympathize with Murphy's character at all. Aside from that, I enjoyed seeing mention of the Busy Bean regulars as well as Hunnie and Gigi. This was my first book by the author and I feel like it was well written and overall I enjoyed it, aside from the previously mentioned aspect. I did also really like the epilogue and I look forward to more in the Busy Bean series!

Ben is an orthopaedic surgeon who meets his former friend and crush Murphy back in his hometown in Vermont. Murphy has been publicly ostracized by her family and is now working at the Busy Bean. These two reconnect and are perfect for each other but for the fact that he never came from money and she did. The whole money thing is what causes many problems between them. These two are so meant to be together and I loved the push and pull of their relationship. Ben tried his hardest to be romantic all the time. Two people who are meant for each other.
