Studfinder (The Busy Bean) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 449 ratings

Who does that sexy silver fox think he is, sitting in her spot in the Busy Bean Cafe?

Over forty, with zero filter, Rita Kaplan loves her coffee, her hiking boots, and her law practice. Life hasn’t always been carefree, though, and Rita’s past holds the scars of poor decisions after deep loss. She survived, though, and no smirky silver fox is going to get in the way of her happiness. Even if he knows how to use his drill, screwdriver, and every other tool in his box to tempt her...

Former arson investigator Jake Drummond could add ex-con to his resume if he had one. Instead, he’s serving the final year of his sentence on probation. This involves mandatory AA meetings, hosted by a feisty local attorney, and working on a renovation project, supervised by the same annoyingly attractive whirlwind, who also believes she owns the exclusive rights to a comfy couch in his new favorite coffee shop. Soon she’s everywhere, including the few places she shouldn’t be--like in his bed and in his heart.

Can opposites lower their walls and construct something everlasting . . . or will their connected past lead to demolition for two hearts in need of a rebuild?

Once again, L. B. Dunbar has written an addictive book. The story is beautifully written with lots of emotions, and characters that are so well described, and of course, romance is included. I love the background of each character story, the meeting and eventually the Romance, and love of the main characters.
This is the story of a man wrongly accused of a crime that he didn’t commit. Family dedication has led to him serving for this crime. Upon release, he is required to work off his parole in helping rebuild a local house. His supervisor becomes his attraction, and they begin a relationship. Their relationship that becomes very unstable due to outside influences. The truth is finally revealed, about the crime, and the couple workout their problems with their strong love. They obtain their HEA with a beautiful closure.
I’ve read several books written by L.B.Dunbar, and will always recommend her books. Her writings just grip your heart, your imagination, and your emotions. Her books will always be an automatic purchase for me.

Really enjoyed that this couple was over 40. I don’t completely believe the storyline but that why it is fiction.

Sometimes people make bad decisions. Do they deserve a second chance? In LB Dunbar’s Studfinder, the answer is yes for both main characters.
Rita Kaplan has had good family guidance, secured a great job at her father’s law firm, and has become a strong part of the non-profit that helps others reacclimate to life following bad decisions. She doesn’t need to research these people; she meets them where they are at. But life hasn’t always been easy for Rita as her fiancé died and in trying to come alive after his death, she became an alcoholic.
Jake Drummond reports to Rita at Building Buddies, finishing up his jail sentence. A decent man, he’s taken care of his younger brother Nolan, and helped care for Nolan’s son as he grew up, and even took the blame for an arson he had nothing to do with. He just wants to be done with his sentence and then leave Vermont to start over.
A tasty coffee, a plush couch, a dusty couch cover, and a strong pull towards these complete opposites makes this a great read. You cheer for Jake and Rita, hoping they get that second chance despite the bad decisions both have made.
As usual, LB Dunbar does not disappoint in her creation of the families involved in this book or in the realistic way they plow towards an HEA. As a reader, I was not disappointed in the way they came alive whenever they are together.

As with all of L.B. Dunbar’s books, I fell in love with Rita and Jake right away. He was sexy and funny and she was a serious taskmaster who played by the rules in and out of the office. They fed off of each other and it wasn’t long until their business dealings turned into more.

Rita and Jake were definitely not a match made in heaven even though their chemistry was as hot as the dark roast coffee at the Busy Bean Cafe. Rita’s feisty attitude and stubborn personality appealed to Jake and he knew that getting to know her would take a lot of work, but he was up for the challenge. Rita had tried to be immune to Jake’s sexy smile and silver fox good looks, but she was finding it impossible. She thought of him at work while she should be reading client files and she dreamt of having coffee with him on her couch at the cafe. What was a girl to do?

When Rita lets her hair down she is funny, carefree and is always thinking of ways to help others. Jake also has a humorous side and I loved his impromptu dance routines that brought a smile and a slight blush to Rita’s face. Perhaps this was the way for Jake to win her heart? Rita and Jake appeared to be complete opposites but they both have pasts that had taken a heavy toll on their lives. Jake was looking for answers and a fresh start while Rita needed to decide which fork to take in the road to her next great endeavor. Would their paths to happiness converge at the same spot or would the truth about their pasts be too much for their relationship to handle?

So happy Rita got her own story. This character quite surprised me. I was expecting her to be harsher, and jaded, but turns out she's a big softie underneath that loudmouth. No matter how hard she tries to not be affected by Jake, he's in there before she realizes.

The last thing Jake needs is to fall for his supervisor while on parole. Except Rita is just so tempting, and the chemistry between them burns so hot.

Things get complicated when the past collides with the present, and Rita tends to run away. Scared to let love in again, it often feels she has one foot out the door. Meanwhile Jake is all ready for love, but family issues are keeping him back. There is a lot of tension and resentment that I feel never fully gets resolved.

Overall I enjoyed reading it. There were a lot of good, sweet, and hot moments. I love that Rita doesn't always get her way, and Jake is really a decent man.

This is a very realistic story. It talks about addiction, time in prison and the ability to be rehabilitated after getting out.

With such weighty topics, it is surprising how often I smiled and laughed while reading.

Rita and Jake just clash upon first meeting. They also egg each other on. I almost liken it to the little boy in school who has a crush on a girl he likes - he likes to do “mean” things to her.

They both have a sob story, but they try not to let the things that happened to them define who they are. And there are some very tender moments as well.

I haven’t read a story quite like this one before, and I enjoyed it.

Rita has been celibate since her fiance died causing her tailspin into alcoholism. Jake has been celibate since he was incarcerated seven years ago. They meet at the Busy Bean when Jake is sitting at her unofficial couch and won't move. Handsome meets fiesty and this amazing story takes off from there. Don't miss the ending, very thought provoking. Where are Bull's brothers books??

Rita is a no-nonsense lawyer who has had her fair share of personal problems when she meets Jake who is on parole. The chemistry between these two is instant but initially comes out as antagonistic. When it starts to change, omg the sparks fly all over the place, as these two are perfect together. I wanted to hug both of them as well as cry for them. An intriguing, complex and wonderful story of love in your 40s.
