Cair (Veiled City Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,835 ratings

Twenty-five-year-old Luca Elliot lives in a city divided. The humans and the supernaturals mostly keep to their own kind, but Luca—curious and desperate for work—crosses the border and finds himself employed by a tall, stupidly handsome Fae with killer horns. He should be intimidated, but instead, Luca is utterly captivated. Falling for the boss is a bad idea though, right?

Cair Haryk is only a visitor to the human world and, between his position in the Fae kingdom and a bargain he made years ago, he can never remain. He's content with that until he meets Luca—his soulmate—and hires him to work in his high-end lounge. Cair tries to guard his heart, but fate has other plans and, despite his best intentions, he falls for the pretty little human. Hard.

Luca can't enter the Fae realm, and Cair’s time in the mortal lands is drawing to an end, so while the attraction between them is irresistible, their situation is impossible. They can't be together. It’s tragedy and heartbreak just waiting to happen.

Isn’t it?

CAIR is an MM paranormal romance with spice, size difference, and soulmates. It features a lovable human trying to find his place in the supernatural world, and a secretive Fae who's not as detached as he pretends to be. CAIR is Eryn Hawk's debut novel and first in the VEILED CITY series, which must be read in order due to the overarching plot and worldbuilding. Each book focuses on its own pair and their HEA, though certain background elements will be resolved as the series progresses.

Eryn Hawk (she/they) is a Scottish author living in England with her kitties and an endless collection of novelty coffee mugs. She has a fascination with fantasy, myth, and monsters, so her days are mostly spent creating new worlds, where her creatures and their humans can fall hopelessly in love—and lust. When she's not writing or reading queer romances, she can be found playing Dragon Age or chilling on the sofa with a period drama on the telly.

All the things you love about a soulmates romance with fae!
OMG, you guys, I've just turned the last page of "Cair" and I am absolutely buzzing! 🌟 Can we talk about how this is Eryn Hawk’s FIRST book? Because it’s giving very much seasoned-author-with-tons-of-best-sellers vibes, and I’m here for it! 📚✨ So, here’s the tea ☕: the story follows Luca, our adorable protagonist who's always been a bit extra when it comes to sensing the supernatural. He takes a leap of faith, crosses into the other realm (because, why not?), and stumbles upon a job at The Veil. And y'all, that's where he meets Cair—the owner, who's not only fae but like, fae royalty or something. 👑✨ What I am OBSESSED with is the romance! 😍 It's like, they’re fated mates, right? But it's not all insta-love cringe. No, no, they give us the slow burn we deserve; it's all very 'I'm-madly-attracted-to-you-but-let’s-take-it-slow' while they’re low-key falling hard for each other. And when they finally give in to their desires, it's FIRE! 🔥 The steamy scenes are everything, filled with the cutest pet names and the most 🔥filthy🔥 talks – it's hot, it's tender, it's got me clutching my pearls and swooning at the same time! And Cair, the powerful, enigmatic fae, is literally putty in Luca’s hands by the end of it, and who can blame him? Luca is all charm and sweetness; I mean, I’m half in love with him myself. 💖 Okay, but let’s talk pacing: the story doesn’t rush you. It's a slow, delicious build with lush descriptions and introspective monologues that just add layers to the narrative. Some might find it a bit much, but I say it's immersive and I'm totally digging it. 🥰 Side note: Alex and Teighan, the secondary characters, are the bomb.com, and there are these not-so-subtle hints that Teighan might be rocking a 'Daddy' vibe in future stories. I. Am. Shook. And living for it! Alex is the perfect match for some Daddy energy, and I am buzzing with anticipation for their story! 🐝✨ Bottom line: "Cair" ticked all my boxes. It's a debut, but it feels like the work of a master. It's got all the supernatural MM romance goodness, the sizzle, the swoon, the world-building... Ugh, my heart! Eryn Hawk, you've got me, and I’m stanning forever! Fans, friends, get on this, because you will NOT be disappointed. 10/10 recommend! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #BookLove #ErynHawkDebut #Cair #MustRead #Bookstagram 📖💕✨

Such a cute story! Loved the lore and the realms and the world and I loved the spice! I love that it had a HEA. I got tired of fantasy books always wanting to end on a cliffhanger and some dramatic moment where the protagonists are in peril.
Im excited to read book 2!

"Cair" by Eryn Hawk is a sweet, feel good story. The banter between the main characters, Luca & Cair was too cute. This was my first book by Eryn Hawk and I was not disappointed. I am really excited to read book # 3 the continuation of Luca & Cair's story. Hopefully, this will answer some questions regarding Luca's past.

If you like fun banter, fated mates, with the right amount of spice, this book may be for you.

This was the first book I've read by this author. It was a great read and I loved the relationship development between Luca and Cair. The book flowed together nicely and the sex was hot. I don't want to give away anything about the book but I would totally recommend it to anyone who loves reading MM stories like I do. Can't wait for the next book. Alex and Tee's story should be even better. Alex is a trip and I can't wait to see what he does to get the man he wants.

Loved this book! Cair and Luca's story is so funny, sexy, and heartfelt. Their world was such a refreshing outlook on the human and paranormal trope. The characters all gelled well and the story flowed at a constant pace where I was never bored and I couldn't wait to turn the page. Looking for to Tee and Alex's story.🙂

5.0 out of 5 stars So good and leaves you wanting more
Reviewed in Canada on January 29, 2023
This book started off a tiny bit slow and then steamrolls you into not being able to put it down. It throws in just enough angst to have you wanting to shake the book as if you could shake the characters and go WHY? The communication that is needed! And the urge to slap characters upside the head! There is just enough angst to keep it interesting and there is enough left unfinished as you get to the last few chapters to have your heart pounding wildly as you pray to anything and everything that you are not perilously approaching a cliffhanger of epic proportions. And while you do get the HEA you still end the last page going...... wait.... what? I WANT MORE, WHAT DO MEAN THATS IT? And then you desperately click the link to the next only to remember that THIS book only came out like a week ago.

How dare you make me so invested in this world so quickly?!

But no, all kidding aside you should read this. Everyone should read this.

Oh and considering how much I love my spicy books, the fact that's there so little spice until over halfway in the book didn't even bother me 🤣

5.0 out of 5 stars A really enjoyable take on the Fae
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 19, 2023
Luca has never gone to the Fae side of the city - respecting his mum’s wishes even though she’s passed - but with no job and no choice he takes the brave step to cross over. He’s curious about the Fae and manages to get a job at a bar/club run by Cair - a gorgeous, tall Fae with white hair and some giant horns.

I loved both characters - Cair is so protective of Luca, while being resigned to his fate of returning to the Fae realm. And Luca - brave, stubborn and so, so smart, I really was rooting for him all the way through.

The world building was really good - we learn some of Fae culture including the infamous deals that the Fae are most definitely known for but I was definitely left yearning to know more. There’s some side characters that I want to know more about - Tee (Cair’s brother) and Alex (Luca’s best friend) for sure but there’s some other Fae I’m definitely also itching to know more about. I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book but after finishing I immediately bought a copy (because I know I’ll reread and it’s only fair to support the author) and preordered book 2 - so glad that it’s Tee’s story!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun human/Fae story
Reviewed in Canada on September 29, 2023
Eryn Hawk has imagined a fantastic earth where Fae have come over to earth and been there for a while. The trope of Fae prince vs human commoner is treated fairly regularly including disapproving parents but what I really liked was the way Ms. Hawk writes about the Fae part of earth and how magical Luca finds it to be. Luca himself is a marvelous character who I greatly enjoyed and his prince Cair sounds like a Fae I would lust after myself. I do hope that we learn more about the Fae area of earth in the next volume.
