Careers for Girls: Let go the sandbags and dream BIG. Hardcover – November 2, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Diverse and inclusive women empower girls to dream BIG, rise high, and blaze their own trail through traditionally male-dominated careers. Some women walk around, some use a wheelchair or wear prosthetic limbs, and all look strong and capable.
The author states: "Young girls today are growing up in an image-conscious world that is teaching them to care less about 'making a difference' and more about making their faces look different. The women in this book want people to look at them and think smart first, not 'pretty' first. They prefer a makeup-free look and don't mind a few hairs out of place. They want to help young girls realise that what they can look like is not as important as what they can do. Because girls don't need more influencers; they need more role models."
This book is a map for young girls that can start them on a journey of discovery to find out what they really want to be when they grow up.
Careers for Girls features:
- Explanations of STEM and why it's important.
- Descriptions of different careers, and what's so great about them.
- The barriers that stop girls getting into STEM. (Parents are top of the list).
- The importance of 'Girls Supporting Girls' with a 'We Stick Together' logo.
- A poem and jingle about clean 'Tap Water' for green homes and schools.
- Drawing and fill-in activities, and a 'Mindfulness' moment.
- Original hand-drawn artwork with some Irish places of interest.
- Colourful backgrounds with lots of conversation starters, drawn especially for younger readers.
(Backgrounds include lots of different environments like desert, snow, jungle, farmland, ocean, rivers, and coasts. Subtle conversation starters include; therapy cats, a cute Loch Ness Monster, endangered plants and animals, tectonic plates, 'things I can't control', recycling, bungee jumping off the Cliffs of Moher, bug hotels, ancient ruins, breastfeeding, Ogham writing, salmon migration, hibernation, and alien flowers; to name a few).
Some of the content in the book aligns with the global, social, and environmental justice goals of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, by mentioning and promoting sustainability, green energy, recycling, education, clean water, girls supporting girls, and gender equality.
Give a young girl in your life the gift of a bright future so she can dream BIG and rise high.

From the Author
I call it MIO pretty (Media's Idea Of). So many girls and women feel the need to have perfect hair, perfect white teeth, perfect nails, perfect makeup, perfect eyelashes and perfect eyebrows - so much time spent on their faces! Even younger girls are portrayed with long hair, decorated with flowers or bows, dresses and pretty shoes, long eyelashes and jewellry trying to "pretty" them up.
I wanted to help take the focus away from what girls can look like; to what girls can do. We need to give girls the gift of a future brighter than how perfect their eyebrows and hair can be.
The 16 characters in my book are not perfect, but they are strong, diverse, and inclusive role models for real life. They all have STEM, Trade or Art careers, and with no make-up or fake nails, no false tan or fake eyelashes, these ladies care more about the work they do, and the difference they make. A few are in wheelchairs, some have prosthetic limbs, and some have scars and moles, and all have hairs out of place. They are strong, happy, and valued women who give girls a chance to dream BIG.
From the Back Cover
*STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics.
This book is a map for young girls that can start them on a journey of discovery to find out what they really want to be when they grow up.
Careers for Girls features:
- Colourful descriptions of STEM, Trade and Art careers.
- Explanations of STEM and why it's important.
- Sections on 'What's so great?' and 'Where can you work?'
- The barriers girls face choosing STEM school subjects.
- Original, hand-drawn, digitally coloured artwork.
Bonus additions:
- A note about friends and 'Girls Supporting Girls' logo.
- 'Tap Water'- a jingle for green schools and homes.
- A 'Mindfulness' moment and 'Fill-in' activities.
- Interesting, colourful backgrounds with lots of conversation starters and just a hint of Ireland.
Many books and toys aimed at young girls feature pink, princesses, fairies and skinny dolls with makeup; all fun to play with and read about but where are the role models to balance out girls' expectations of real life? Who can make them feel worthy and valued? Who can show girls they can become important in their field of work, invent new technology, discover new medicines, inspire others, or choose a career that could save people, animals or the planet?
Young girls today are growing up in an image-conscious world that is teaching them to care less about 'making a difference' and more about making their faces look different. The women in this book want people to look at them and think smart first, not 'pretty' first. It is time for girls to rise and they don't need any more distractions. They need role models.
Give a young girl in your life the gift of a bright future, and let her dream BIG.

About the author
Hi! My name is Anne Daly, and I am the author/illustrator of the children’s book, 'Careers for Girls'.
I worked in management and in the STEM sector building, repairing and troubleshooting computers, both in Ireland and America. I am a member of Writing.ie and the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi). I have written for MsCareerGirl.com, BooksIrelandMagazine.com, and the EU-funded Gearing Roles project.
I was born in 1969 and raised in Northside, Dublin. I have two teenage children and I credit them for inspiring in me a passion to help children understand life. This has become the driving force behind my books.
I love nothing more than to settle down and explain things to a young child. They are like sponges absorbing information. If they start to lose interest after an hour or so, I still don’t stop until I’m sure they fully understand. That kind of dedication and tenacity has helped my children become the expert eye-rollers they are today.
I now live in the middle of Ireland in a little bungalow with my husband, our two talented eye-rollers, three stray cats, and a big loud dog. I love nature, puzzle books and, of course, explaining... eh, I mean chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely presented info
Bought for my young niece as she loves books and facts. She loved the detail in the pictures as well as she also likes to draw. So much to look at, great for dipping in and out of.
