From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes the steamy first novel in her new adrenaline-fueled Richter series.
As an employee of MacBain Security and Solutions, Claire Kelly can certainly hold her own. Armed with an impressive set of covert skills, she’s more than prepared to tackle any job that comes her way…except one involving Cooper Lockman.
Cooper and Claire used to work together before his feelings for her sent him packing to Europe for six long years. But now he’s back and determined to ignore the still-smoldering heat that lingers between them.
Their current mission: go undercover together at a California high school to root out the mastermind behind a prostitution ring targeting young girls. The closer they get to the truth and the closer they get to each other, however, the deadlier their task becomes. As Claire and Cooper risk their lives to bring down their target, will their hearts be the final casualties?

“The prose is tight and seductive. The characters are dependable, multilayered, and swoon-worthy. And the plot is a steamy, rousing blend of friendship, family, tension, corruption, sizzling chemistry, flirty banter, red herrings, mayhem, sexy times, and dangerous situations. Overall, Changing the Rules is an action-packed, menacing, addictive novel with irresistible characters that I devoured from start to finish. It captivated, amused, and thoroughly entertained me, and now I can’t wait for the release of the next book in the series, A Thin Disguise.” ―What’s Better Than Books

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJust when I think the Bybee book I just finished can’t be better, the next one mesmerizes me until the end. I discipline myself not to start one of her books until a light day because I know I may not be able to put it down until the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLet's be clear: this is a suspense novel (and partial ripoff of Twenty One Jump Street) with a few romantic scenes. It's not steamy, it doesn't feature a fully developed relationship, and it's not as much of a standalone as it thinks it is. There's as much discussion of human trafficking as there is discussion of feelings, so please know that going in. While the writing itself is solid, I found the tone to be a bit of a head scratcher - who is the intended audience for this? Because of the high school setting, it reads young, but the writing style feels old. It's too much of a romance to appeal to suspense lovers, but not enough of one to appeal to romance fans. Add in the fact that you'll be a little lost if you haven't read some of the author's other books, and... I just don't get it. None of that has anything to do with the quality of the writing, but this was trying to be too many things.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChanging the Rules is a wonderful slow burn, suspense thriller, that focuses more on the relationship build and the mystery/action, than sex. The mission they must solve is to find who is (and how they are) finding young girls and manipulating them into prostitution. The fact the McBain Security & Solutions group goes undercover in a public school AND a private school speaks to the extensive reach across socioeconomic groups of the horrendous crime of sex trafficking. Kudos for Catherine Bybee for shedding light on the exploitation of minors in our country.
The story centers on Cooper and Claire, their mission, and their growing attraction. Cooper is back from a six-year stint in the London office of the security company and is having trouble keeping his feelings about Claire to himself now that Clair is older. Claire started with McBain right out of her Military style private high school in Germany. She can really handle herself due to the covert training she received there and is excited to be taken under Neil McBain’s wing and protection. I was happy to see Neil again, I loved his character in Fiancé by Friday (Weekday Brides Series), tough exterior, protective and guarded, but so much more underneath. The group is tasked with finding out how young girls are being led into prostitution. Are we looking at students, faculty, staff, alumni? It could be anyone.
I love the way Catherine Bybee unfolds the story, the players, and the puzzle that needs solving. There were several characters and I kept changing my mind as to who was good and who was bad. Some are more obvious than others and I was a little surprised by a couple of twists and turns. As for the good guys… I would want Cooper, Claire, and the McBain group watching my back in a bad situation!
I really like the feel of this new series and am looking for the next book ‘A Thin Disguise’ about Olivia!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSubject Matter Aside, this book was well written and does fit with the style I’ve grown used to with Catherine Bybee, however there was something about it that didn’t mesh. Maybe it’s because this is only Book 1.
I am intrigued by the Richter team and the work they do so I’ll definitely be looking for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseCatherine Bybee is one of my favorite authors and knowing she had a new series coming out was extremely exciting prospect and I'm thrilled to say that Changing the Rules is by far one of the best books I've read so far this year. I knew early on in this one that The Richter series was going to be a good one!
Claire Kelly works for McBain Security and while she's a private investigator, she's got a host of other skills that make her very good at her job. Cooper Lockman also works for the company and he has just returned to the United States after spending the last six years working on an assignment in Europe. Claire and Cooper have a bit of a history and so working together could prove to be a bit of a challenge.
When the team is hired to help flush out a prostitution and human trafficking ring at a local high school, Claire and Cooper are forced to work together on a daily basis, which only heightens the feelings that continue to grow between them. Will they be able to do the job they need to do without tipping their hand that they are both undercover and also slowly falling for one another all while trying to keep the young girls being targeted safe?
Bybee does a wonderful job of keeping the reader on the edge of their seat while tackling a problem that is more prevalent than any of us would like for it to be. My eyes were opened to how intricate rings like this are and how sick and dangerous they are. I loved the relationship that Claire and Cooper had. Their banter made me smile so many times! I also loved that some of our favorites from previous Bybee books/series were very involved. I am without a doubt already ready for the next book in this series! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful start to this series for Ms. Bybee!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a gripping, intense, encompassing read Ms. Bybee has written in this book that pulled me in from the very beginning. It is a story that took me on a roller coaster of emotion and suspense that consumed me so much that I read this story in one sitting. Really, I could not put it down, especially since characters from previous linked series were in this book too helping the main characters.
Having been introduced to Claire in a previous series, The First Wives, I couldn't wait to read her story when I read that Catherine Bybee would be releasing it. In this first book of this new series for Ms. Bybee, Claire was such a strong and interesting heroine that proved she had what it took to be part of a security team and do whatever it takes to take down the bad guys. Certainly, there was plenty of danger and undercover work isn't easy, but Claire rises to the challenge while fighting her feelings for Cooper. Another danger that could pose just as much risk as the bad guys. Then again, this pair are so good for each other and prove that love is worth fighting for.
Cooper is one fine man. Definitely near the top of my list of favourite Bybee heroes. If not at the top. Not completely sure yet. I did really like AJ from Say It Again. And Rick from Taken by Tuesday. And Gill from Making It Right. What can I say? I have a soft spot for cops and security guys. Still, I loved Cooper. He's hot. A little vulnerable. Exceptional because of his determination to do what's right and protect those that need protecting.
Overall, Ms. Bybee has delivered a fantastic start to her new Richter series because of the witty banter, suspense-filled plot and great characters that are so deserving of happy ever after. Not only did Claire and Cooper make this a great story but so did the support characters in the security team. Furthermore, I can't wait to see what this author, who is an absolute 1-click for me, has in store for her readers next.
