Purchase options and add-ons
In the fifth book of the popular Seaside Café Mysteries, Closely Harbored Secrets, Everly Swan just wants to make Halloween-themed treats and specialty teas for her customers. But when it seems that she's being haunted by the phantom of a sailor straight out of a ghost story, her plans are capsized. Could this be the bitter end for Everly?
Hitting all the sweet-tea spots, this series is:
- A delightful Tea Shop and Café Culinary Mystery
- The ideal cozy beach read
- Perfect for fans of Laura Childs and Kate Carlisle
It's almost Halloween, and the small island of Charm, North Carolina is decked out for the festivities. When Everly Swan agrees to close her iced tea shop early to help her aunts host their annual haunted historic walking tour, she expects some good-natured spooks. But the night turns grave when one of the ghostly actors is found dead. To complicate matters, the victim scratched Everly's name into the ground before she died, making her a key suspect.
The murder mystery heats up when Everly's potential boo, Detective Grady, takes the case―and he definitely doesn't want her getting involved. Will their seaside romance be threatened by all the ghostly drama? But when a phantom sailor straight out of local legend starts leaving Everly threatening messages, she has to get involved… With a local election under way, ghosts on the loose, and a search for long-lost buried treasure, Everly can't help but stir the pot!
The fifth tea cozy in Bree Baker's acclaimed Seaside Café Mystery series, Closely Harbored Secrets is culinary fiction with a frighteningly fun twist!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt is almost Halloween in Charm, North Carolina, and no one does it better. Everly has agreed to help the aunts with Charm’s haunted walking tour. The tour comes to an abrupt end when one of the actors is found dead. Once again Everly and her aunts are right in the middle of it. The characters in this series are such a delight to read about, and since this is book #5, I feel as if I know them personally. The setting in this coastal town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina sounds like a great place to visit or live! The mayoral election also concludes in this book. This was a great mystery with a little touch of romance and humor mixed in to make this a delightful cozy mystery. Bree Baker knows how to twist the story and provide plenty of red herrings to keep the reader involved in the story. You will not be disappointed if you like a clean, fun mystery!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis series always makes me happy, here I sit in very cold Connecticut and all I have to do is pick up a book by Bree Baker and I can be on the beach in North Carolina with sand, ice tea, treats and books, my idea of paradise. One of the joys of this series is that the author takes us there and paints such vivid images. This is a tale that centers around fall in Charm, with Halloween, the Annual Historic Haunted Walking tour, the Harvest Ball, Amelia's book release and the election involving Everly's great Aunt, you know who's going to have to be in the middle of everything. When a women is killed on the Haunted Walking Tour and Everly starts being haunted by a pirate ghost, you know we are in for a wild adventure!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book kept me engaged from the beginning with, of course, your usual murder and then a twist of old legend thrown in. The story line is creative and Halloween themed, which I love. It's full of Charm "history". I don't like to give the endings away, but I just feel like there was so much love and at the end I was rooting so hard Everly's family. I love books that make me wish I lived in the book with the amazing characters. I will say, though, that the back and forth romance of Everly and Grady is absolutely infuriating for me! That being said--If you love a good cozy set on the beach, reading this series is a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd love to visit Charm at Halloween! Maybe minus any ghosts or murders though...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA fun and slightly spooky Halloween mystery has Everly scrambling once again to find a killer, and Grady gets to scramble and keep her out of trouble. The results of the mayor election were revealed at the end too.
I had my suspicions about whodunit but not why, and I even suspected someone else for a while. The showdown was exciting and really cool as was the outcome of the election. Now I'm caught up and ready to read the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIf I had to choose one series to be the definition of a cozy, it would be this one. I love spending time in Charm with Everly and crew. This might be my favorite so far, I totally feel like I am there. I love Everly's relationship with her aunts and the community that they are part of. I would HIGHLY recommend you read this series if you haven't already, and I would also recommend to read in order.

Halloween season at Charm. With the election looming a gruesome discovery during the annual ghost walk started a chain of events that were just the right amount of spooky.
My heart broke and swelled with Everly during this story and that ending has me eagar for the next book!

Bree Baker’s Closely Harbored Secrets is an entertaining and spooky cosy. This is the fifth entry in the Seaside Café Mystery series but it works as a standalone. I love the picturesque setting, the eerie atmosphere, and the interesting mystery. However, the writing can be distractingly choppy and the characters are sometimes inconsistent.
It’s almost Halloween in Charm and our protagonist Everly Swan has stumbled into another mystery! While helping her aunts with their annual haunted historic walking tour, Everly discovers the body of Dixie Wetherill. She was the actress portraying one of the island’s most popular legends. Everly becomes a key suspect because Dixie scratched Everly’s name into the ground before she died. Everly’s plate is already overflowing as she’s helping her aunt with the local mayoral elections, running her iced tea-shop, and figuring out her complicated relationship with her crush Detective Grady Hays. However, things turn deadly when a ghostly sailor from local legends begins leaving threatening messages for Everly…
The well-paced plot is interesting with great suspense and viable suspects. I love the spooky atmosphere and the role that the supernatural played! Charm’s history is fascinating and well-written. I like that I couldn’t guess the killer’s identity until nearly the end. The killer’s motives made sense and were well-thought out. There are a few subplots but they are nicely done and fit well. I especially liked reading about Everly’s beloved Aunt Fran’s run for Mayor.
This is a great cast of interesting, memorable, and realistic characters. I love the warm feelings of family, friendship, and community. Everly is a relatable protagonist as she struggles with her annoying fitness bracelet, whips up delicious confections, and snoops! I love Everly’s fun Aunts Fran and Clara. There is a lot of romantic drama but it nicely complements the main plot. I like Matt, the sweet and hunky paramedic who catches Everly’s eye. However, I’m no longer a fan of Everly’s relationship with brooding Grady. I am tired of the will they or won’t they between them. It’s time that they become a couple or Everly moves on. Moreover, the characters, especially Everly and Grady, sometimes act inconsistently. Grady is also a bit flat in this book.
I love the wonderfully written description of Charm and small-island life as well the yummy food and fun Fall festivities. However, the book really could have used some editing as the transitions are sometimes distractingly choppy, abrupt, and a bit confusing.
Closely Harbored Secrets is a great cosy Halloween read. Although I wish the characters and writing were a little stronger, I enjoyed this fun and spooky book.
