Sam Youd was born in Lancashire in April 1922, during an unseasonable snowstorm.

As a boy, he was devoted to the newly emergent genre of science-fiction: 'In the early thirties,' he later wrote, 'we knew just enough about the solar system for its possibilities to be a magnet to the imagination.'

Over the following decades, his imagination flowed from science-fiction into general novels, cricket novels, medical novels, gothic romances, detective thrillers, light comedies ... In all, under his own name and a variety of pen-names, he published fifty-six novels and a myriad of short stories.

He is perhaps best known as John Christopher, author of the seminal work of speculative fiction, The Death of Grass, and a stream of novels in the genre he pioneered, YA dystopian fiction, beginning with The Tripods Trilogy.

'I read somewhere,' Sam once said, 'that I have been cited as the greatest serial killer in fictional history, having destroyed civilisation in so many different ways - through famine, freezing, earthquakes, feral youth combined with religious fanaticism, and progeria.'

    The characters in this book have depth and are developed well. They are very human - they make mistakes and have feelings that they themselves don't always understand. As they get trapped in a cave system without food or supplies, the author did an outstanding job of describing the fear and beauty that are both present under the earth. Will they make it out alive? I was never sure as their situation was so dire. The ending was shocking but satisfying, all at once. I'd recommend this to anyone that enjoys a page-turner with characters that are realistic and human.

    An Oldie but a Goodie!

    I just turned the last page of my last book read in 2021. I haven't read such a nail-biting suspense novel in decades. This was a story that surely was more than meets the eye!!

    One young couple are on their honeymoon at an Inn owned by an Count in the mountains of Austria. Another middle-aged couple also staying at the inn, have returned for their annual visit so the husband can enjoy exploring the vast underground caves nearby.

    The tale blends a serious look at the philosophy of life, love, and the pursuit of happiness, a scandalous love affair between one of the wives and the Count, and a death-defying journey underground when all five key players are imprisoned there due to a foolish mishap.

    I couldn't put this vintage 1968 novel down. I don't think I breathed at all during the last quarter of the book! Ebay has quite a few cheap paperbacks to offer if you wish to give it a try!

    I love John Christopher but this book is 2/3 slow and 1/3 incredible (when everything goes wrong in the caves).
    The title should be "5 stuffy uninteresting people in a love triangle trapped in a cave". I expected something H.G. Wellsish based on the cover which was awesome

    This is a novel of two halves. Part one sets the scene and introduces the main characters. Part two is where the action happens. The two parts are roughly equal in length and some readers may feel frustrated that the plot is slow to get started. For me the first part was in itself enjoyable to read, so this wasn’t a problem. The long buildup is all about character development and is successful in that it adds depth and meaning to the second half. Once it gets going, the plot moves along quickly and the tension builds nicely. I found it riveting and couldn’t put the book down.

    I’m a fan of John Christopher’s work and for me this is one of his better novels. It’s not a ‘cosy catastrophe’ in vein of Death of Grass, The World in Winter and A Wrinkle in the Skin, but it shares some DNA with those books. Like all of his work there’s a great premise, a well-constructed narrative, clearly drawn characters and fluid prose. It hasn’t dated badly for a book written 60 years ago, though of course the era (late 50s) is reflected in the dialogue and attitudes of the characters.
