Coaching the Nerd: An Opposites Attract, Campus MM Romance (Nerds vs Jocks) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 1,040 ratings

Super-bod meets super-brain

What happens when marshmallow-bodied supernerd Sean volunteers to be on the jocks’ flag-football team? It screws Bubba’s fraternity’s chances at the coveted flag football title, that’s what.

Bubba is drafted to be Sean’s personal trainer. He has to whip Sean into shape and make sure he doesn’t F up their team.

Sean may be a supernerd, but to Bubba he’s funny, and wise, and kinda cute. He’s also the one person on campus who doesn’t see Bubba as a big, stupid jock.

One BIG problem. Sean’s motivation for getting into shape is to lose his virginity -- and Bubba isn’t happy when guys start sniffing around.

But Bubba’s straight. Isn’t he?

Can a big, dumb jock from Nowhere, Wisconsin change his whole life for a genius who just wants to get laid?

COACHING THE NERD is a total makeover, opposites attract, My Fair Lady trope, bi awakening, campus romance – that grabs your flag.

Oh I just devoured this book. Sean and Bubba sucked me in from the get-go and I didn't want to stop until I was done. I adored Bubba! What a gentle, caring man who immediately had a connection to Sean and was so kind to him, despite the rivalry between the Jocks and the Nerds. And Sean was a trip! His direct, specific style of speech was fantastic and so apprapo for his character. On paper they shouldn't have worked as a couple, but they just clicked and the development of their relationship from rivals to friends to boyfriends was so sweet!
The build-up as Sean and Bubba got closer, and Bubba started to realize he wasn't as straight as he had always thought, was done so well. They spent time together, talked to each other, brought out the best in one another. Their first kiss was fabulous! They did go through a rough patch that made my heart hurt a bit, but they both came out stronger and more determined than ever to fight for each other!
If you like the nerd and jock college trope, with a virgin, a bi-awakening, great dialogue and a really nice HEA--grab this book!

It was exactly what I wanted for tonight. It was fairly fast paced but made sense. I loved how sweet and honed able Bubba was, as well as how blunt and scientific Sean was. They at first didn’t seem A fit but they soothes each other’s hurts. They lifted each other up as no one else did. And I super appreciated that. It’s what love is about. There is a small separation towards the end but it made sense and is resolved in a lovely way.

Tara Lain rarely lets me down. I’m a huge fan. And I love this collab with author Eli Easton. I spent the night before my first chemo for breast cancer genuinely smiling and getting out of my thoughts. Thank you!! That’s a huge compliment! And I don’t typically even like books set in the college years.

Both Sean and Bubba (not a fan of his name but it worked) were so distinctive with such well-drawn voices. There were a few minor twists that gave this story more depth and some subtle observations that made oversized points that I appreciated. Lain doesn’t shy away from layering important issues, like racism, when they are so far from the point of the story and yet so much a part of the world. And it’s just there. Not much commentary. And people like me who are BIPOC and rarely see ourselves at all in romance (I’m not even talking about as MCs!), really do appreciate these small nods to our lived experience (shout out to Armando!!).

We need more writers like Lain, who don’t shy away from diverse representation. I definitely reject the notion that fiction writers must only write about people of their same racial/cultural/LGBTQ+ background. Yes, there will likely be differences. And, yes, it’s difficult to do, and sometimes there are fails. However, when there are successes (Lain has several. I don’t know about Easton yet), they transcend “otherness” and bring us closer to our shared humanness. What a joy to experience!

These last comments of mine are all inspired by a quarter page of writing in this book that didn’t have to be included at all. Well, that and many of the other books I’ve read by Lain. Just really grateful in a time in my life that is reinforcing the importance of noticing the small things in life that I appreciate.

Coaching the Nerd is a brilliant opposites attract story of discovery, expectations and love. Sean is an academic all-star whose parents expect great things from. Sean is also a 90 pound weakling who couldn’t get a guy to look at him through a microscope. When is fraternity needs someone to volunteer to join the ALA flag football team Sean sees it as a way to get in shape so he can get rid of his pesky virginity.

Bubba is a big guy who has dreams of being more than an auto mechanic like his father. People assume that because he’s a jock that he’s dumb. Sean believes in him and that makes all the difference. Bubba is done playing to stereotypes.

I adored this delightful tale and laughed and cried with the boys. I can hardly wait for the next installment.

I enjoyed Coaching the Nerd. In my opinion, it isn’t a five star, like the first book in the series, but it was still very good.

The book was written in dual perspective first person. It worked well here, since both main characters are very different. Sean has his own vocabulary, which is not the way most people speak.

I enjoyed the premise of the book, liked both main characters, and the storyline. I suppose I’m a proofreader at heart, because I noticed a couple proofing errors. But overall the book was edited nicely.

It appears a third book is in the works.

This is definitely recommended reading for people who enjoy this genre!

This book was the best! Bubba totally stole my heart, but so did Sean. I really loved these two guys as separate characters and as a couple. Really though, Bubba the big soft-hearted guy was just so wonderful.

This is an adorable story of opposites attract. But at the same time, both MCs are strong and kind individuals who want to make their own ways in the world and find the confidence to do so because of each other. This book was even better than book 1 for me. It’s a favorite for sure!

I really loved Bubba and Sean, they are both super sweet and generally lovely to each other. I love how resolute Bubba is once he makes his decisions, and I love how Sean helps Bubba realise his potential.

Sean speaks in a very proper way, which would normally annoy me as most people don't speak so formally, but for Sean it works. It's also obvious when he's playing this up for Bubba's enjoyment.

I also loved how much character growth both MC's go through, it's a must for me usually. There's a lot of snarky banter and enjoyable interactions, so the book really is a great read.

My only negative feedback is that the resolution with Bubba's Dad doesn't quite feel authentic, even though it's not completely out of the blue. I think I would have preferred this reveal to occur earlier in the story, so the reader has more opportunities to see Bubba and his Dad work through the problems in their relationship; there's a lot to unpack there and I think leaving it until end was a missed opportunity to show this complex relationship in more detail.

I received an ARC and have chosen to leave an honest review.

I thought the first book was amazing, but this polar opposite couple love story was amazingly written. Please though, in book three, tell us who won the bet? I am dying to find out. Also, want to know more about Dobbs and Jesse. You , the reader, will not be disappointed by either book. Enjoy.

What can I say I love Tara Lain/Eli Easton books and this is no exception book 2 is just as much fun as book 1.
Sean is so sweet natured and just wants to be wanted. Bubba has a heart of gold and sees the good in everyone, treated as dumb just because he doesn’t have a quick comeback to the rest of the jocks.
Sean needs to get fit not just for touch football but he wants to meet a man and lose his virginity.
Bubba being a sweet natured man wants to help him get fit then realises he doesn’t want others to pay attention to Sean.
A great sweet story I adore Bubba
I received this as an ARC review and bought too
