Coal Miner's Daughter Paperback – February 16, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
Reissued for the 40th Anniversary of the Oscar-winning, Sissy Spacek-starring film of the same name, Coal Miner's Daughter recounts Loretta Lynn's astonishing journey to become one of the original queens of country music. Loretta grew up dirt poor in the mountains of Kentucky, she was married at thirteen years old, and became a mother soon after. At the age of twenty-four, her husband, Doo, gave her a guitar as an anniversary present.
Soon, she began penning songs and singing in front of honky-tonk audiences, and, through years of hard work, talent, and true grit, eventually made her way to Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry, eventually securing her place in country music history. Loretta's prolific and influential songwriting made her the first woman to receive a gold record in country music, and got her named the first female Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association. This riveting memoir introduces readers to all the highs and lows on her road to success and the tough, smart, funny, and fascinating woman behind the legend.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2009I have read Loretta's bio many times, saw the movie many times, but after having the chance to visit her birthplace in Butcher Holler, Kentucky and being taken on a personal tour of the cabin she was born in by her brother Herman, I decided to purchase this book and read it again. The main thing that stands out to me about this book is the complete fearless honesty of the writer. Sometimes the truth is hard to take but Ms. Lynn put's it out there for what it is. Still to this day, I have never read a bio that was this fearless with the truth. I have nothing but total admiration for this lady and think that even if you are not a fan of Loretta's music, this is just an amazing read of a young girl growing up too quick, hard times with a seemingly difficult marriage , Appalachia culture, and the early years of country music. Painfully honest at times, a fascinating read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2024Loretta Lynn , Gone now but not forgotten. This book is pure Loretta. Such a enjoyable biography. She will always be my #1.I could not put this book down.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2021I read Coal miners daughter when it first came out. I decided to read it again. This is an updated version, so I'm glad I bought. I had no problem with the grammar, her country girl language. She said she did not have a lot of education. More about that later. She used that sentence far too often. I do not believe she had no idea what sex was when she married. What did she think the monthly bleeding was? I grew up in the country also. We had cats, dogs, rabbits, chickens and ducks. I know something happened to make babies happen. I did not know what or how but I was aware there was something even at a young age.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2022Great read about the First Lady of country music; candor, humor and humility along with strength and great beauty from this overcomer example of a woman. Blessed to have been in the same time period this great lady and her special way of becoming your friend through writing and song. Thank you, Loretta, God bless
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2022I decided to get this book after I watched the movie loretta and patsy. I was born in 1976 and of course heard of Loretta Lynn but couldn't say I was a fan. I became one after reading this book. It's really interesting. I find her Charming, grateful, and approachable. Loretta says country music is dead and if this books tells it how it once was then I definitely agree with her.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2018I read this book many years ago then watched the movie a few weeks ago and it made me want to read the book again! So I bought this book, reread it and made me want to go to Butcher Holler - especially since I found out that we had been to Paintsville KY for hubby’s work - which she mentions this town and I couldn’t believe I had been just 10 minutes away from her birth place! Now I am definitely going to go visit there when the weather gets better. This is probably one of my favorite autobiographies and Loretta Lynn is one of the best female country singers ever!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2020I enjoyed the behind the scenes into her life. It puts perspective on the fact that she was a young teen who was married before she had a chance to grow up. But she kept her values and morals in the entertainment world. She is a great Lady who respects others and deserves to be respected. Money was hard and took perseverance to earn a dollar, she knew what it was to be poor and proud. Definitely worth reading for this supports the facts in the movie but it was somewhat different in timelines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality of the bok
Loretta Lynn's Coal Miner's Daughter: Book arrived in great condition with just one price tag removed.
I just saw the film again recently with Sissy Spacek. Then I realised it was based on Loretta's own book so I bought it. No time to read yet but I'm sure if it was good enough to make a qulality film like that about, it will be great. Love the albums of both Loretta and Sissy (like Meryl Streep, why those two have not had careers in singing as well as acting, beats me - if Cher could do it!) Really look fwd to reading it.
