Purchase options and add-ons
A body clearly shaken, but not stirring…
Summer, 1929. Murder isn’t on the menu when Chicago tycoon Ransom Warne hosts a dinner party at his country estate. But someone’s a victim—and everyone’s a suspect—when drinks and desires lead to disaster.
Hollywood starlet Lottie Landry has returned home to celebrate her engagement. She’s famous for her on- and off-screen romance with co-star Noble, but, privately, she’s having second thoughts. As her former guardian, Ransom doesn’t approve of the match. Yet his own affections raise questions when his wife, Edith, suspects him of having an affair—just as Noble suspects Lottie. Stirred into the mix are Lottie’s friends Helen and Rex, a young journalist and football hero who can feel tension building in the Warne mansion like a shaken champagne bottle.
And once the cork pops, a body drops.
Coattails and Cocktails is where Agatha Christie meets The Great Gatsby, a whodunit spiked with new love and old baggage, public faces and private vices. Filled to the brim with romance and mystery, it’s sure to intoxicate.

About the author

Rumer Haven is probably the most social recluse you could ever meet. When she's not babbling her fool head off among friends and family, she's pacified with a good story that she's reading, writing, or revising--or binge-watching Buffy. A writer/editor hailing from Chicago, she presently lives in London with her husband and probably a ghost or two. Rumer has always had a penchant for the past and paranormal, which inspires her writing to explore dimensions of time, love, and the soul. Her award-winning work includes COATTAILS AND COCKTAILS (First Prize Winner, 2018 Red City Review Book Awards) and WHAT THE CLOCKS KNOW (First Place Winner in General Fiction, 2017 Red City Review Book Awards).

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2017It's perfect that two of the characters in this book are actors because I could practically see this story playing out on the big screen while I read. From the very first chapter, the intrigue is thick with complex characters in complicated relationships. You immediately get the sense that there's way more to each of their stories than they're letting each other know.
And, oh boy, were they keeping a lot from each other. Their secrets come out as they grapple with solving the mystery of the murder. I was thrown for more than one loop throughout the story - the author is great at messing with your mind until she wants you to know the truth. The pacing of Coattails and Cocktails is just right. I was vested in these characters and the story every step of the way.
The atmosphere of the writing and the setting were in perfect sync - both have an elegant vibe that draws you back to an era gone by. Makes me want to dress up, put some finger waves in my hair, grab a highball, and join them at the party.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2017Nothing but love for this story. The characters, the setting, the storyline that you may think you've figured out (but you'll be wrong😉) all combining to create a tale you won't want to put down. Rumer Haven will introduce you to Lottie, Edith, Noble, Ransom, Rex and Helen. The descriptive setting along with the accuracy of the vocabulary will plant you right in the middle of a nineteen twenties who dunnit that will keep you guessing the whole time. I enjoyed every single page of this story and can't wait for more. Well played Ms. Haven, well played.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2018An excellent mystery .
Interesting characters , who on the outside you think you have them pegged. All is not what it seems.
5 stars for the story that I thought I had figured out (several times) but I was wrong , Ha ha.
I recommend to all .
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018As a child paper dolls were popular and we used to dress up our dolls in their finest and make up stories for them. This book had about as much substance as our paper doll stories and that's what this reminded me of. I tried for several days to read this and struggled through to 38% before I called it quits. The writing was decent, the plot not so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2017Interesting time period and characters. Love this era.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019This book is filled with suspense and mystery to the very end. I liked the characters with their flaws and the storyline well worth reading. Would like to read more of Rumer's books.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2017What a fantastic read! Impossible to put down... The characters, the atmosphere, the huis clos, all contributed to create a unique mystery, full of setbacks and surprises, with on top the promise of a love story. It feels like an Agatha Christie novel but with a glamour Hollywood background. Perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Deliciously Dark Romp Through 1920s American History
Having loved the slightly paranormal What the Clocks Know, set between modern day and Victorian London, I knew I was in for a treat with this 1920s extravaganza! Billed as a cosy crime, the scene is set pre-murder in an American country house with several delicious characters in situ. The murder happens around a third of the way through and then it's a whodunnit guessing game with several red herrings to missteer you. Agatha Christie-like in tone, there are some wonderfully comic moments throughout as well as a deep understanding of the characters involved. Instantly I was transported back to a more golden age with Haven's brilliant use of language and scene setting. And then there are those cocktails! Well... I love a cocktail, so as I say, this book is nothing less than delicious! As I've said before I was looking forward to this and it more than lived up to expectations. In my opinion Haven's strength lies in periodic writing, in fact, I've found very few recently who can do it better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coattails & Cocktails - A Dinner Party to Remember
Rumer Haven sure is a 1920’s gal. Once again she let her readers slip into that intoxicating and fascinating period. She’s done so with Seven for A Secret (very well) before, but this time with Coattails & Cocktails, you’ll get a cozy mystery on top. Right from the beginning you dive together with six strong characters into a hot summer’s day. A light breeze now and then couldn’t brush away the clumsiness of tension that’s lingering beneath the surface of pretended lightheartedness. Each of the guests and the hosts seems a secret to hide.
The dinner party starts and ends with a murder. Who did it? Every single one is a suspect. Everyone has a motive. There are secrets and lies. But before the first lights of dawn will greet the new day the tragic truth of the mystery will be revealed.
I couldn’t let go of this Dinner Party. It captured me and sure will you. Rumer Haven created strong characters, you’re connecting with immediately. I like the way she arranged the story around each of them to solve finally the murder. Coattails & Cocktails is a succeeded cozy mystery you should read with a nice Gin Rickety at hand (or any other cocktail you prefer). Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wonderful!
Such a unique book, such a unique voice. I loved the depth of characters, the pace, the language, the kaleidoscope of cocktails - all so evocative of the location and period. The author had me guessing and changing my mind as to whodunnit right until the end. Rumer Haven, I'll be back for more!
