The Conscience of a King: With the Magna Carta signed, will there finally be peace? (The Medieval Saga Series Book 7) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 597 ratings

The final instalment of an absorbing historical saga! Perfect for fans of Conn Iggulden, Robyn Young, Alison Weir and Anthony Riches.

Reform comes at a heavy price…

England, 1229

After fighting in the Albigensian Crusade in France,
Simon de Montfort – a landless nobleman – arrives at the court of Henry III, hoping to re-establish his family’s claim to the Earldom of Leicester.

In pursuit of his goal, Simon soon proves his value to Henry as a military leader and political advisor, becoming one of the king’s most trusted men.

But discontent is building within the English court. Frustrated by the king’s preference for foreign nobles and his extortionate taxes to fund wars abroad, the leading barons are constantly on the edge of rebellion.

As a man with a strong sense of justice, Simon is dismayed by Henry’s treatment of the common people and the corruptibility of the English legal system. And as the barons’ anger seems set to boil over into armed conflict, Simon must search his conscience and decide how far he is willing to go to bring about reform…

Can Simon restore his family’s fortunes? Can he help lead England into a new golden age while retaining the king’s favour?

Or will his principles cost him his life…?

David was born in post-war Nottingham, and educated at Nottingham High School. After obtaining a Law degree he became a career-long criminal law practitioner and academic, emigrating in 1989 to Australia, where he still lives.

Combining his two great loves of History and the English language he began writing historical novels as an escape from the realities of life in the criminal law, but did not begin to publish them until close to fulltime retirement, when digital publishing offered a viable alternative to literary agencies, print publishers and rejection slips.

Now blessed with all the time in the world, his former hobby has become a fulltime occupation as he enjoys life in rural New South Wales with his wife, sons and grandchildren to keep him firmly grounded in the reality of the contemporary world.

    Quite interesting and entertaining.

The history of the first three Henrys
is wonderfully told, especially in a way that I’ll remember. I would have given it a 5 but there are too many grammatical errors that his editor should have caught—what a shame. This is a wonderfully understandable series.

Mr. Field makes historical fiction novels difficult to put down. I have read all seven of this Medieval Saga Series and loved every last page. I completed volume 6 the day before the 7th became available on Kindle Unlimited - while I was impatient to get the last installment of he series - I was thank there was one more to read yet sad it was the last. I was a crazy mixed up mess of emotions! I cant wait to dive into another series by Mr. Fields and will be starting one today 😊
Mr. Fields, please keep writing 😊

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series

What a wonderful series this has been. It was interesting to read a sympathetic view of Simon de Montfort and has made me want to read more about him. A lovely story, well-told and very well researched too. I hope that David Field has another series in mind as I’ve enjoyed this and the Tudor series so very much.

3.0 out of 5 stars All too rushed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2023
This book suffers, like most in the series after the first, of trying to get through the period at breakneck speed. Characters suddenly age 10 or 20 years, or die between chapters, without really rounding off their story arc. That's bad with a fictional character as most have been, since you can spend the time you want with them - it's perverse with a real man, as the protagonist is here (Simon de Montfort) since the years we mostly know him for are zoomed through in the last 20 pages here, as if the writer had had enough. The stories are gripping - as the author says they write themselves - the writing less so.
It's also odd in this 7th in the series that we suddenly abandon the fictional family we've been following, apart from one member who is wholly uncharacterized, just a name really, when he appears in Montfort's story. Why set them up just to abandon them in book 7?

5.0 out of 5 stars Highlight on a Relatively Unknown Era
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 30, 2023
The final saga of the era of the early Plantagenets complete with pennants flying, battles, intrigued and terrible tempers.

Through the eyes of the servants and staff to some of these invading Normans.

A time of history rarely mentioned in main stream school history of at all! Gripping and revealing stuff, that will keep you reading until the end.

Well written and enjoyable, the only thing that I didn't like as a horse person, was the activity of 'holding the horses bridle', and not ' the horse by its bridle' as the former suggests that the horse was not wearing it at the time! However, this would only bother anyone who knew the difference, and would not spoil a set of damn good books.

Will be hard to find my next read now!

Learnt a lot more history again, and the usual great minor characters, some with humour, to make it an enjoyable read.
