WHY C. G. COOPER MATTERS
Fiction has the power to change lives.
Pay a visit to Cooper Country and you’ll understand why. With his unique voice and flair for creating characters you’d love to hang out with, C. G. Cooper imparts every one of his novels with messages that perfectly illuminate what Faulkner called, “the human heart in conflict with itself.” In them, characters confront hard truths about life, the necessity of war, the military industrial complex, and why and how good men and women die.
But there are messages within the messages.
There is the power of the individual to triumph over evil against overwhelming odds; the struggle of good people against their inner demons; there is brotherhood, family, the discovery of allies in unexpected places, struggles with faith; there is community; there is authenticity; Cooper’s heart is on every page, beating hard and fast through action and moments of tenderness alike.
Expect high-octane action, slow-burn thrills, and gut-wrenching drama. Expect the ultimate conflict of the human heart.
This is Cooper Country. Lives will change.
THE LOWDOWN
Drawing on his days as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps—a stint that came on the heels of a degree in foreign affairs from UVA—Cooper sifted his experience through his vivid imagination and created Corps Justice, the first novel in the beloved Corps Justice series. Thus, a band of characters was born that would go on to enthrall readers throughout 17 novels and counting. With more than 2 million book downloads and multiple appearances in the Amazon Top 100, C. G. Cooper remains one of the most successful USA TODAY and Amazon best-selling authors.
In 2020, he won the prestigious James Webb Award presented by the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation for his novel Chain of Command.
In addition to bouncing around the country in search of the perfect vacation (turns out, it is anywhere with his family), Cooper has called Nashville home ever since his final Marine duty station. When not enjoying the laid-back lifestyle of Music City, he’s doing his best to add more novels to the growing list at cg-cooper.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy reading has gone far beyond my reviewing and this is the author's fault. At the end of each book is a teaser that leads to the next in the series and I have become addicted. At this point I have reread the seventeen bookd in the series that I read between 2020 and 2022 and have finished the eighteenth. But this review us just about the first of two boxed sets which contains the first three. The first, Corp Justice, introduces the members of SSI, a team of warriors created by a retired Marine Colonel to advise and provide security to governmental and nongovernmental entities. In particular, it introduces his son, Cal Stokes, the main character of the remaining books of the series and his closest friends. This book basically is about Cal and his effort to bring to justice a man who created a personal tragedy in Cal's life and has little to do with the theme that runs through the remainder of the series, other than to introduce the concept of Corp Justice created by Cal's father. In the end of the book, Cal is introduced to the Council of Patriots.
Council of Patriots, the second book, is really the book that introduces the theme of the rest of the series and also to more of the core members of this band of brothers. Cal and an SSI team head to Los Vegas to uncover who is behind a scheme to blackmail a US Congressman and in the process uncover and thwart efforts to take over the Democratic National Convention. In the process, they are joined by Daniel Briggs, a key member of the team going forward.
The third book, Prime Asset, involves Cal and the team's effort of recover Neil Patel, a UVA graduate that Cal brought into SSI as the company's chief scientist, and who has been kidnapped by a rival "security" group. They are successful, but in the process, a close friend of Cal is killed along with other members of the SSI team.
All in all, this is a good introduction to the concept of Corp Justice which is the basis of the series, and to some, but not all of the characters that make this series a great read. While each of the books in the series can be read as a stand-alone novel, it is much better to read the books in order. The events in each book are more meaningful when read in the context of the relationships developed in earlier books in the series.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was on Amazon, checking the reviews of a book that I'd recently read and noticed the first book, Back To War (Corps Justice), listed in the "other books bought" feed of the page. My main vice in the book world is military thrillers so, I jumped over to the page and noticed that the first three books were being offered in a box set. I decided to pick them up after reading the book descriptions.
The review will cover all three books.
Book 1 - Back To War (Corps Justice)
In this first book of the series we're introduced to Cal Stokes. Cal is a recently retired Marine taking a stroll with his fiancé around the streets of Nashville. Unknown to Cal, he and his fiancé have been marked and have become the prey of a ruthless drug gang looking for an easy mark.
Forced into an alley to defend his fiancé, he soon realizes his mistake and finds himself surrounded. The ensuing fight will have resounding effects not only for Cal, the drug gang, but Cal's security company founded by his late father.
Unintended consequences.
The book is written in a blend of screenplay dialogue and normal paragraph formatting.
At first I found the formatting to be distracting but it doesn't take long for the action to redirect your attention from the way it's written to what’s being written.
I blew through this book in a day and a half. There isn't any attempt at a surprise plot line or misdirection tricks in this book. The plot line is obvious. What isn't obvious and what makes the story so enjoyable is seeing how Cal and the gang get there.
While I enjoyed this book, had I bought it by itself I may have skipped the rest of the series, concerned that the formatting used in this book would have been carried through the rest of the books. I'm glad I bought the box set. I would have never know the great action that awaits.
Book 2 - Council Of Patriots
In this book we find Cal firmly ensconced in his security company and reunited with old friends and family. Cal's called back to home base from an Intel gathering mission by his cousin who’s been running the company since his father was killed. It was an odd request but then this was a meeting with the representative of a highly secret group of former politicians called the Council of Patriots.
The son of a highly placed politician is being framed but no one knows why or what the blackmailers want so, Cal and his team are tasked to fly to Vegas (the scene of the crime) to see if they can smoke out the blackmailers and find out what the end goal is. If the blackmailers have their way the Empire of Japan will rise again.
Fortunately this book is written in the standard format which made it a much more enjoyable read from the beginning. This book has a really good mystery hidden and you will be very surprised when the traitor is reviled and the scope of the plan is laid bare.
We are introduced to some new characters in this book and one that is a life saver, literally, and another that could be a major asset in the future. There's plenty of action and twists to keep you glued to the pages. Throw in some cool tech toys and the Russian mob and you'll be hard pressed to put the book down.
The book ends on a bit of a cliff hanger which normally I hate but since I already had the next book I didn't feel the need to email the author to lodge a complaint :-)
Book 3 - Prime Asset
In this, the final book of the set, Cal and the team are off to locate their kidnapped friend and employee. An employee so valuable that it could not only crush Stoke's Security but have disastrous consequences for many companies as well as the government.
The return of two old enemies, united together for a common goal that serves their need for revenge, will put Cal and his team in mortal peril. If that wasn't enough, they're in the remote wilds of Wyoming, cut off from support by a traitor, facing an impending snow storm, scrambling for clues to locate their missing brother, and oh ya, there are bears in those there mountains!
It took me less than a day to read this book. Once I started it, I couldn't stop. It's packed with action and mystery with multiple plot threads running to keep Cal and the group from finding their lost comrade.
This book and the series in general, tick off many of the boxes I look for in a book. Military/spy thriller. Packed with action. Good cast of characters. self-contained. I dislike series that are either spread out over several books or need to have a reoccurring bad guy that always seems to beat the odds and escape to come back time and time again.
These books are all self-contained so while you get the best experience by reading them in order to learn the characters and their motivations, you could pick any one of them and read it with enjoyment and not feel so lost that the book falls flat.
Do yourself a favor and pick up this box set and get ready for some sleepless nights and a constant spike of adrenaline.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHad just read the first Reacher book and found this 3 book series. Good storyline, character development was excellent, lots of action and each story leads to the next like a good series should. Books 1-3 completed guess its time to buy the next series. I won't go into detail but if you like action, intriguing characters, political thrillers this series is for you. From gangs in Nashville to Japanese warlords in Vegas to the mountains of Wyoming each story is good.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm not saying this wasn't a fun read (it is), but you should probably go into the adventure understanding that political propaganda is in your future. I got the book for free, so it was worth the price. I think someone in the mood for pulp fiction or a soap opera will likely enjoy the few hours it takes to get through this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseReally enjoyed the pace never a dull chapter. No slow times that a lot of books have.
The author’s story line was believable, unlike some that are so far fetched

5.0 out of 5 stars Once a Marine, always a Marine
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI bought this boxed set of the first 3 books in the Corps Justice series to read on holiday.... A good thing there are plenty more in the series to read as I’ve still got lots of reading time left!
Book 1: Back to War
The 1st of the Corps Justice series begins with Navy Cross Marine veteran, Cal Stokes, whose parents had died on 9/11, losing his fiancée in an initiation, gone horribly wrong, for a white majority hating ex-New Orleans’ gang.
Recovering from his own injuries, Cal returns to the safety of the VIP quarters on his family’s security company campus. He still wants to catch up with the thug responsible for his fiancée’s death; but this is a very different kind of war to those he’d been involved with in Afghanistan.
While not essential, I was glad I’d read the short prequel first. God Speed not only provides some background to the series, based on true events of 9/11, but it gave me insight into the style of the ex Marine Corps author, who almost writes as if the reader is present too. In Back to War, a lot of time is devoted to providing details of both the individual characters of Cal’s ‘support’ team, but also their backstories. As a British Army wife for 35+ years, I appreciated the military focus and jargon; although I suspect some readers could find it hyper-macho!
Book 2: Council of Patriots
You can take the man out of the Marines, but you can’t take the Marines out of the man! Book 2 soon picks up where the first book left off with Cal Stokes, who now works for his deceased father’s company, heading up the covert branch of the security organisation; his SSI division deals with threats to the American homeland, exacting justice in order to keep their country safe.
Immediately after his fiancée’s funeral, Cal had been introduced to the secret group of retired politicians who form the Council of Patriots. In turn, they indirectly introduce SSI to clients, which might include members of the serving government who face challenges, such as being set up. or blackmailed. While in Las Vegas, to assist a politician, Cal senses he’s being watched....but there’s rarely a fair fight; usually someone opens their big mouth! Despite using every advantage SSI has, no-one can predict the outcome of the forthcoming drama.
Book 3: Prime Asset
I love how each book sets up the next one!....
SSI is an elite team, dedicated to making America a safer place. Now their prime asset has gone missing! His capture, and the exposure of the company’s covert security operations, would mean disaster for both their organisation and the American government. Travelling with his unofficial body-guard, owner of Stokes Security International, Calvin Stokes, is heading the search for their invaluable colleague and friend.
I can’t wait to find out what is next for Cal Stokes’ team!

5.0 out of 5 stars positive review
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just finished the first three books in this series. Action books are my hobby and so far these are among the top ten best yet. Will be reading the rest of the series.
