A Cowboy for Keeps Mass Market Paperback – July 28, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
From a "fabulous new voice in romantic fiction" (NYT bestselling author Lael Miller): an arrogant cowboy meets a headstrong woman determined to take custody of his niece, only to realize that she may be the family he was always searching for.
There's not much that could rattle a cowboy like Reese St. James. But when his twin brother dies in a car accident, Reese is stunned to discover he has a six-month old niece, Sawyer. Wanting to make up for lost time, Reese heads down to Unforgiven, New Mexico, to bring her home. He doesn't plan on Sawyer's guardian giving him any trouble, but the intriguing, independent woman is turning out to be more than he bargained for.
Lorelei West had given up hope of having a family of her own until her sister's tragic death brought little Sawyer into her life. And now there's no way she's going to let Reese take her away. Lorelei knows hotshot, good-looking cowboys like him -- she's dated enough of them -- and she intends to stand her ground. Yet the more time Reese and Lorelei spend together, the harder it is to deny the attraction building between them. But opening their hearts to a baby is one thing -- can they also open their hearts to the possibility of a happily-ever-after?

About the Author
Laura Drake grew up in the suburbs outside Detroit. A tomboy, she's always loved the outdoors and adventure. In 1980 she and her sister packed everything they owned into Pintos and moved to California. There she met and married a motorcycling, bleed-maroon Texas Aggie and her love affair with the West began.
In 2014, Laura realized a lifelong dream of becoming a Texan, and is currently working on her accent. She gave up the corporate CFO gig to write full time. She's a wife, grandmother, and motorcycle chick in the remaining waking hours.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2020Lorelei is 37, the hardworking manager of a cafe' in the tiny, hardscrabble town of Unforgiven. She's struggling financially, her house is falling apart, and her mother, who lives with her, has dementia. Then her beloved sister, the beautiful one, the wild one, dies in a car wreck in another state, leaving behind an infant daughter for Lorelei to raise. The father was killed in the same wreck. This is the setup for Lorelei and the infant's uncle, a wealthy-but-not-happy good guy, to come together in an unlikely romance.
The good: Drake writes of real people. Her female leads aren't drop-dead gorgeous and they usually have some kind of character flaw that's not easily ignored. Romance novels aren't real life, but some of them are of such a spun-sugar/Barbie and Ken quality that it's annoying. Not with a Drake. You get lovable drunks, nibby old reporters, and ex-cons as best friends. Lorelei has beautiful eyes but a long face. She's plain. Reese, the male lead, was stomped by a bull in a youthful attempt at rodeo and can't have children (although don't worry, everything works great!) Plus he carries the relatable baggage of feeling like he was born into the wrong family; his late father disliked him for not being a hell-raiser and uber-athlete like him and the dead brother.
More good: the humor. Drake's characters are sometimes raw and uncouth, and funny!
The bad and ugly: nothing. Seriously. I love everything Laura Drake writes. I'd been waiting for the next book in the series for a while. Now I feel like going back and reading the first two again.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2020Laura Drake has taken the Cinderella story and made it so much more. The depth of her characters elevate this beyond the typical romance. Reese is the handsome Texan who can buy anything he wants. But beneath, he is the little boy scarred by his own family. Loralei, the big-hearted diner manager, does't have two cents to rub together. But she has family and friends who love her. These two are the missing piece in the other's life puzzle. It takes a 6 month old orphaned niece to bring them together.
As always, Ms. Drake writes living, breathing, 'real' characters you want to know. Her secondary characters are anything BUT secondary. They step right off the page, whole and well-drawn. This novel was no exception.
This novel is my favorite of the Chestnut Creek series. I do have to confess I used a LOT of tissues while reading this one. So, if you want to read a heartwarming story that will make you laugh and cry and, more importantly, take you out of this pandemic crazy world of ours, read A Cowboy for Keeps.

I loved this book from the beginning to end. The characters struggle. They’re quirky and flawed. The main characters, Lorelei and Reese, are thrown together through family tragedy, and of course we’re rooting for them to turn to each other from day one. But they have a lot of obstacles to overcome—the hallmark of a good tale—and right up to the end those obstacles seem almost insurmountable. Should I tell you it has a HEA? Nah, I’ll let you worry about it.
I will tell you I thoroughly enjoyed the secondary characters, from the prickly cook named Nevada, and her partner, Fish, to the larger-than-life old coots at the breakfast bar of the café. Even baby Sawyer touched my heart. I’m packing. Moving to Unforgiven. And if that doesn’t work, I’ll just have to go back to the drawing board and grab the first two books in this series. I can’t believe I missed them!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2024Drake made the residents of Chestnut Creek my friends in just a few pages. Her story arc and conflict were so expertly done, the novel could be used as a writing class study piece. I’ve never known a cowboy or rancher and am sure I missed something steamy.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2020I’ve read all of Laura Drakes books and they’re all excellent, but this one and Days Made of Glass are my favorites.
Laura’s books are all about life’s challenges and overcoming them. Her books are more women’s fiction, but the romance is hot and spicy! Highly recommend this book!

This is my first book by Laura Drake and overall, I enjoyed it. However, there were issues with the book that kept me from giving it a 4 star rating.
This is a cute story about a working family in New Mexico, a rancher in Texas and a tragedy that brought them together.
The first half of the book really sucked me in - the descriptions of Lorelei, her sister Patsy, Momma, Sarah and Reese were fantastic. And all the events happening at the beginning were so interesting and fast paced that I couldn't put the book down.
But then it almost became monotonous. Lorelei's attitude began to irritate me. And don't get me started about the lawyer - I mean, WTH? I feel like the middle of the book dragged. But it picked back up towards the end and overall, I was happy with the story.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The opinions stated above are mine without biases.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting plot!
After doing some binge-reading while recovering from a health issue, I found myself comparing some of the authors I've been reading. Laura Drake is an excellent writer with a real flair for developing her plots and characters. If you like some steamy scenes and flawed characters who seem to be stubbornly proud of not trusting themselves or anyone else, you will love A Cowboy for Keeps. The real rescue here is that both central characters really do have the best interests of an orphaned baby niece who is equal parts cute and adorable. I have to admit there were times I just wanted to swat Lorelei upside the head for being dense. But she did redeem herself on many others levels. Bottom line: great summer weekend read!
