When her aunt suffers a stroke, New York portrait artist Emory Austen returns home to the North Carolina mountains to mend fences and deal with the guilt over her husband's senseless death. But that won't be as easy as she hoped.
Someone in the quirky little town doesn't like Emory. Is it the sexy architect who needs the Austen land to redeem himself? The untrustworthy matriarch? The grudge-bearing local bad boy? Or the teenage bombshell who has raised snooping to an art form? Even the local evangelist has something to hide. Who wrote the cryptic note warning her to "Give it back or you'll be dead? And what is 'it'? As the clues pile up and secrets are exposed, Emory must discover what her family has that someone would kill for.

This story was engaging from the start. The characters were varied and realistic, and their development throughout the book was intriguing. The descriptions of the setting was a unique take on southern mountaineers. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Emory Austen returns to her home in the North Carolina mountains after the death of her husband. Emory’s Aunt Pris has had a stroke and she has returned to take care of her. Well, that is if she will let her after she wakes, if she does awake that is. Emory hasn’t been home in a while as her Aunt ran her off a long time ago telling her not to come back.

After Emory’s arrival in town, she is awakened in the middle of the night to smoke in the house. When Emory tries to flee the fire she is hit over the head and her purse is taken. When her purse is found nothing has been taken. Later she finds a note that said Give it back or you'll be dead. Who left the note? Give what back? What does the note mean?

There are quite a few suspects as to who could have left her the note as there are a few people in town that doesn’t like her but what did she have that he, she, or they wanted back? Did she have what they thought she had? Or maybe her Aunt Pris was the one holding the prize.

The House on Crow Mountain was a very engaging story that drew me in from the first page. Once I picked up The House on Crow Mountain there was no way I could put it down until I had read the whole story.

I had to know what it was that Emory was supposed to have and who wanted it. Why did they want it so bad? The suspense was eating me alive so much so that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. What was so important that someone was willing to kill for it?

The House on Crow Mountain was like watching a movie. I could see each and every scene as it played out. I could see all the characters as the descriptions made them come alive right on the page.

The House on Crow Mountain is the first book by Rebecca Lee Smith that I have read and I can’t wait to check out more of her novels.

I would recommend The House on Crow Mountain to all mystery and suspense fans! One-click your copy of The House on Crow Mountain today!

The House on Crow Mountain is probably the most uncozy-like cozy I have ever read. Don’t get me wrong it totally adheres to all the cozy rules; no graphic language, sex, or violence. It also follows the popular cozy tropes; a small town, a broken-hearted woman who returns home to make a new start, clever pets, etc. It is just I consider cozy to be a light afternoon read. More fluff than serious. I mean no disrespect to the books and authors I have read to date, some are among my all-time favorites.

This book from the first sentence to the last pulled me into a hard mystery thriller that just happened to follow cozy rules. It has everything; gripping suspense, a leading lady wracked with grief and guilt, and a possible love interest trying to redeem himself from a tragic mistake, or was it? There are far-reaching family secrets, menacing red herrings, and a sinister plot. There was no guessing whodunnit before the reveal. I really (I mean really) did not like the person, but there were so many other people to not like, to suspect, to think about that it barely registered. I could not put this book down as the story unfolded and the floating, maybe relevant plotlines merged bringing the story to its climax.

I seriously hope for this to be a series as there are characters that I would love to learn more about, but I tell you, I would be okay with this being a one-off. The story as it stands has mostly been told and it is that good.

Such an enjoyable book. The kind you can’t put down. The kind that is so good you’re mad when it’s time to do any chore whatsoever. This wasn’t your everyday romantic suspense. It was full of suspense and yet only hinted at romance. My favorite kind of romance story. It also wasn’t the “trick the little old auntie out of her property” book. There were many pieces to the story, and this is what kept me glued to the pages.

This is an author who can make her characters real. I could picture everyone. A sweet helpful old woman in a nursing home, a bratty eighteen-year-old female, another totally grown up but still very bratty female, a widow, and of course a handsome man. A handsome man who seems good and trustworthy, yet a great deal of people in town hate fiercely. There were many other characters that added to this story and yet there was never a moment I had to turn back a page or two to see just exactly who someone was.

There is so much going on in this book. So many underlying subplots. But just like the author’s characters, the subplots seem to add to the story rather than confuse it. It is difficult to write a plot so intricate and yet keep it as clear as this story is.

I intend to see what else Rebecca Lee Smith has written, but I also hope she is currently writing more good stories like this one.
