Monty, along with his best friend Bishop, investigates an odd seal-like creature swimming in Manchester Lake. The pair soon realize they've found a selkie when the magnificent animal transforms into the most gorgeous man either of them has ever seen. Determined to discover the origins of the mystical man, they bundle him into Bishop's brand-new electric automobile and whisk him off to London.
There they find a host of distractions: a tastefully debauched house party hosted by silver-tongued aristocrats, and a queerly European-inspired novelty called the night club. Both are filled with a cast of characters sometimes amusing and sometimes frightening. And as the night unfolds, Monty comes face-to-face with ghoulish agents of the occult as well as revelations from the past.
Most surprisingly of all, Monty finds himself falling for the beautiful creature from the lake, who seems equally interested in him. Can he really find himself in love with a man he has only just met? Or do they have a deeper connection which goes much further back? And what does it all have to do with the memories of his trip to Paris three years prior?
The mystery of the selkie from Manchester Lake is only the beginning, and before their adventure is finished Monty will see the culmination of long suppressed secrets explode in a firestorm of magic and passion!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021I really enjoyed this intriguing tale and the mix of historical romance and the supernatural, topped off with an MM romance. The attitudes of the time toward MM relations felt realistic, and I really enjoyed the characters. Just the right amount of dark and eerie mystery and suspense.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2021Wow... This book was like a very large boulder rolling down a gentle slope. Starts out a bit slow while steadily picking up speed. By the halfway point it had me enthralled and just sucked me in further and further as I moved forward! What a truly fascinating and fabulous ride it was!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2021I liked the premise and the story, but I found the storyline bouncing between 1907 and 1910 annoying, and could find nor rhyme nor reason for it not to be laid out chronologically. Also the conflict in the back room at the end had too many data just pulled out of the air, with no back story to ground them into the rest of the tale.
The way that the characters had to be so circumspect was realistic to the time period. Good commentary on people trying to live authentically in shadow.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2021This was an interesting book as I’ve read many genres in the M/M world and this being as I’d say sci-fi, was a good book. It moved a little slow at times for me but the writing was top notch & an overall good read. It’s always hard when you have to process a historical book as well as a sci-fi.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2021When Monty and Bishop were in Paris both their lives were changed. Now three years later, their lives are going to change again. This is the first book I've read by this author but won't be my last. I really enjoyed this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021This was a good mix of magic, romance, and a historic setting. I really enjoyed the characters and the story. It had a great blend of so many different great elements. I really liked the adventure and the fun part of the story. I felt like I was there and would love to have these characters as my friend.

The book had a certain appeal to it, but it just didn't work for me. I did like Rodin, selkies are a not a common shifter and he certainly was a unique character. Monty was a likable enough character. I think part of my issue was simply how much gets crammed into a single day in the story. There were chapters that flashback to three years before in France, but those are background and buildup for the main climax of this book. I had a feeling about what was going on with Bishop early on in the story, so the climax was at least partly expected for me.
*I did not read the previous books in this series before reading this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2021I loved the historical setting and the gothic atmosphere of this book. You truly believe there are magical things going on both good and evil and you had better be on your toes just like the characters. Monty and Rodin (love that name) make a great romantic pair. A bit of the feel Poe, of Eyes Wide Shut and The Secret of Roan Inish here.
