Darkness Falling: A Paranormal, M/M, Friends-to-Lovers Romance (Light Up the Dark Book 1) Kindle Edition

When the world goes dark, can true love light the way?

Lex

I seem like the luckiest witch in the world. Despite him being a straight and human mage, the love of my life, my soulmate, Mike, has agreed to ritually bind our lives together. As excited as I am to join the elite Magic Corps with him, I’m terrified we’ll be dragged into a brewing war between humans and supernaturals. How can I ask for more than friendship from Mike when he’s already given up his family and his whole world for me?

Mike

Choosing Lex over the human world is easy. Even if our soulbond is a platonic one, I’ve never doubted that my place in life is by his side. I always thought magic and friendship would be enough to see us through, even against my dad’s homophobia and hatred of supernaturals. Then again, I didn’t expect to start
wanting Lex or that “us against the world” would be so literal.

And that’s before the explosions start.

We’ve always known we have a third soulmate somewhere in the world, looking for us. As the world ends, the only way we can survive is to stick closer together and hope our missing piece can join us before it’s too late.

Author's Note: 1st person, dual POV. Darkness Falling is the first installment in a paranormal, postapocalyptic romance trilogy, which will offer a HEA MMF triad and launch a much larger, primarily MM romance series. Darkness Falling is a MM, friends to lovers, fated mates romance with a bisexual awakening, found family, military conflict, a magical apocalypse, an undercurrent of forbidden love, and a HFN ending. Cue lots of pining from badass cinnamon rolls, fluffy wolf shifters Lex wants to adopt (or keep as a pet), one terrifying snake Mike wishes Lex would forget, precocious princesses, and a pack of witches and shifters touring the Holy Land. From the music-filled streets of New Orleans to the deserts of Afghanistan and Iraq, follow Lex and Mike as they discover just what it means to fall in love with your best friend. Stay tuned for Book 2 in the trilogy, Darkness Creeping, for the full throuple experience, coming Fall 2023!

The world created in this m4m,w romance novel is much like the world we live in, although a little more complex in its diversity of witches, shifters, mages, and humans! If I could I would⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ this book! It's a good few hours of reading, although I do not usually go for romance novels (I enjoy a good fantasy) there was not a dull moment and I absolutly love the characters. The authors' way of storytelling, in combination with the first person perspective, allowed enough detail and action to keep me hooked and waiting for the second! I love the imagination and energy! Hats off to this new author!!

Decent premise but the military stuff along with the rest of it did nothing for me. I liked the characters and part of the world building. The overall story concept was good. I just couldn’t really connect with it.

Bria Ferguson has created an amazing world where supernaturals live together with humans, but it is not an easy thing as many humans hate anything supernatural. Into this world are born two boys. Mike is a mage and human while Lex is a witch. They have known they were to be together since they were five years old. They kept it a secret to avoid issues. So, Mike was trained by Lex’s family. Entering into a soul bond was something they both wanted as young men. Lex really wanted more than a platonic bond, but was sure he could never ask for more from his straight partner who is giving up so much to be with him. Mike had no problem choosing Lex over his human family, especially his father who often spewed hate.

Beginning a new part of their journey together, the two join the Marine Corps, followed by the MagCorps. Training together is intense and the two learn a lot about each other. Mike realizes that Lex is what he wants not just in his life but also his bed. They have known there is a third part to their soul bond and they do find her. She is a shifter and a princess, and opinionated.

Real life comes with lots of problems. For Mike and Lex, these real problems start with an explosion, changing and ruining so many lives. The story takes so many intriguing turns with them winding up in so many places, from the Middle East to New Orleans. When darkness falls, they have no choice but to count on each other and the brotherhood of the MagCorps.

Darkness Falling was an incredible story with lots of action, love and some fun along the way. For example, Lex wanted a fluffy werewolf pet. The next book should be just as amazing as this one - maybe even more so as we are more familiar with the world. It was exciting, action packed and realistic. Not everything went well for our heroes and heroines. It was a lot of work and so many problems to overcome. I cannot wait to read the next one and see where the journey goes.

The world these characters inhabit, the premise that draws them together, and the characters themselves— all of these are definitely intriguing. Mike and Lex are interesting people in a somewhat complex situation and it’s easy to want things to work for them. Plus, there’s the fact that they inhabit a world full of fascinating supernatural elements, and there’s the organization they join…all in all, there are lots of compelling world building components about. Stylistically, this book didn’t always work for me: there can be more emphasis on telling than showing, and at times this made me to feel a bit disconnected from the characters or overwhelmed by information that, while compelling, wasn’t always presented in the most organic or absorbable way. Overall, however, an enjoyable read, with a truly interesting premise. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

This is a debut author, and she has hit it out of the park. The world building is phenomenal, and the story is well-written. The characters are fun to read, and their development is fantastic. There is enough tension in the story to keep you engaged and wondering what happens next. I am thoroughly looking forward to the next story!

Not sure what I expected honestly when I first read it, but I decided to take the leap and give the story a try. Loved Lex and Mike's story! And I can't wait to see what's next in the series!!

Mike and Lex are interesting, and I couldn't help but find myself willing things to work out for them.
Plus, the world is full of the supernatural.
I would have liked a little more from the characters themselves at times, but all in all this was an enjoyable read, and I'll be keeping an eye out to see what the author does next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative plot

For most of this book the plot is fairly interesting but by no means unique. Shifters, witches, prejudice, relationships and young people learning how to get ready to go to war. There is a lot of interesting build up but then Bria Ferguson has something major happen and she does it very cleverly. Both the characters and audience don’t realize how big this complication is going to be and I will be interested to see where she takes this tale.

A very good book with a nice relationship progression, good plot and well fledged out characters. Can't wait to see what's next.
