Hey there book lovers! It is your old pal, Ninetoes, coming to you from Ninetoes Loves Books Headquarters. Today, I have for you a review of Suzie Lockhart’s Dastardly Damsels I have coffee in my system, and my thinking cap on, so let’s get to it!

I grew up in a household of women. Mom and Dad divorced, and I moved down south with Mom and her friend and my sister to be closer to my grandparents. Within a year of that move, my grandfather died, making me the only male in the house. I say this because growing up the way I did gave me a greater appreciation for what it means to be a man and more importantly a gentleman. The men in this anthology could have used some of my lessons growing up.

Dastardly Damsels is an anthology where the males are reprehensible. Seriously, if I had witnessed any of their shenanigans, I would have stepped in. The women in this book would not have needed me to do so. Oh, these women are far more capable of taking care of business, and they do.

Each story in this book is as different as its author. The genres vary from psychological suspense to steampunk to outright horror. As different as they are, they all have the same thing going for them: The damsels in each story come out on top, and the men get what’s coming to them, sometimes in spectacular fashion.

The best compliment I can give this one is my mother-in-law would have loved it! This anthology is perfect for fans of Fern Michael’s Sisterhood series, of which my mother-in-law was a huge fan, and I bought her every book!

I give this book 4.5 bookmarks out of 5!

This was an awesome anthology of short stories and poems by a talented group of women who know what horror is all about.

A drug addict gets clean but with horrifying results, an Indian goddess of misfortune teaches a racist the error of his ways, a young girl meets her secret crush in the woods but danger lurks, a babysitter has ulterior motives, an artist puts herself into her work...

There are just so many great stories in here.

Tales of werewolves, witches, unearthly beings, and a version of Snow White that the Brothers Grimm would never have dared to tell were among my many favorites.

I loved the suspense and psychological twists. There is even a sentient elevator that is displeased when the elderly elevator operator is fired.

I laughed, I cheered, and I sometimes cringed. These ladies are not afraid to spill their guts or yours to have a good time.

Anthologies are always a mixed bag - even if all the stories are excellent, not every story will resonate with every reader. I judge any collection a ‘Keeper’ if 75% of the stories grab me.
This anthology, 90% grabbed me, and generally grabbed me Hard.
Well-told tales, full of dark wonders, written by gifted authors… nothing better for horror fans!

The year 2024 unleashed many great horror anthologies onto the eager reading public. One of the better collections, as well as one of the most unique, is “Dastardly Damsels,” by Crystal Lake Publishing. This volume was comprised solely of the work of female authors. The common theme is inherent in the book’s title. What is uncommon, is the approach many of these authors/poets use to imbue life (or afterlife) into their characters, and the “Dastardly”paths these “Damsels” take. This reviewer does not jest in saying “This anthology will not disappoint.”
I found a few pieces within this tome worthy of exceptional, high praise; I chose a poem and two stories, that warrant a distinguished spotlight. The first of these is an incredibly written poem, “A Veil of Darkness in Tower Nigh,” by Mary Genevieve Fortier. This amazing wordsmith weaves a poem unlike any read in these, our modern times. The quality of this poem, is without a doubt “epic”- Fortier’s style, composed of fine Middle English, evokes the timeless, classic work of the old world poets such as Chaucer, Blake and Shakespeare. This intricate vision of terror is woven in language both breathtaking and horrifying all at once. For those that know the works of Fortier, this will be quite the treat indeed. Fortier has been deemed “The Modern-day Poe” by legends in the horror genre. This is no surprise, for her command of words and language is astounding, as is evidenced not only here, but within the pages of “Verses From a Deeply Darkened Mind,” a personal collection of this Master Poet’s artistically written work.
The form that “A Veil of Darkness in Tower Nigh” is comprised of, harkens back to a time in our language somewhere between the “Late Medieval Period” of Chaucer and before the “English Renaissance” and the “Elizabethan world of Shakespeare.” The poem begins a dire, desperate warning, as does the Old English “Beowulf,” and rapidly ensnares the reader, plummeting them into a dark, ancient world that one suspects still exists in the shadows of primordial terror. This terrifying tale unfolds as a narrative poem, through which Fortier plucks the chords of fear that writhe beneath our skin, using words as her precision instrument.
This reviewer is tempted to present excerpts of this selection, but it is perhaps even better appreciated if it is experienced first-hand. Many have recommended her work be read aloud. I have to agree; it eerily brings her words to life. Critics and colleagues alike are justified in their praise of Fortier’s body of work; how could they not. Take for example, her 2014 poem, “Every Nine and Twenty,” a creation so unique and terrifying that it actually spawned an urban legend in the central United States. “A Veil of Darkness in Tower Nigh” is a magnificent work of Horror, from an ancient time somewhere within our darkest nightmare.
Another excellent entry in this anthology is a fascinating original story by Gerri Leen, “She.” This piece is a mysterious, eerie tableau, set in a bleak, possible near future where morals, intentions and memory are all elements on the brink of irretrievable loss. The shifting sands of the dynamic between two women in an unnamed place meander through existence in an unconstant landscape. The disturbing path they tread on, winds through turns both unknown and tragic.
A third selection certainly worthy of exploration is Nancy Kilpatrick’s “Farm Wife.” This story drops the reader into a life of days bleeding together in a farm house surrounded by unending fields. Kilpatrick effortlessly breathes a weary existence into a woman named Noma, who is forced to helplessly watch her shrinking world grow dimmer as she waits for her returning love to darken her door. The story features a rather sharp instance of foreshadowing that the reader won’t realize has been visited upon, until it is too late.
Suzie Lockhart has created and edited a fantastic volume of truly frightening and original works by some of the most talented women in the world of Horror fiction. “Dastardly Damsels” is an anthology that is definitely worth the read.
