4.2 out of 5 stars 237 ratings

Frances Doughty is a young sleuth on her first professional case, trying to discover who distributed dangerously feminist pamphlets to the girls of the Bayswater Academy for the Education of Young Ladies. Armed with only her wits, courage and determination, she finds that even the most respectable denizens of Bayswater have something to hide, and what begins as a simple task soon becomes a case of murder. As election fever erupts and the formidable ladies of the Bayswater Women's Suffrage Society swing into action, Frances’ enquiries expose lies, more murders and a long-concealed scandal, and she makes a powerful new friend. The second book in the popular Frances Doughty Mystery series.

Once you have cleared your schedule and settled comfortably in a Morris chair, a glass of Bristol cream at hand, you are ready to enter Victorian Bayswater, under the able guidance of writer Linda Stratmann and accompanied by the remarkable Frances Doughty. "The Daughters of Gentleman" is the second of what one hopes will be a long series featuring this redoubtable "lady detective". In the first book, "The Poisonous Seed", Frances took on the role of detective to clear her father's good name. The second book marks her debut as a professional detective, when her services are sought by the governors of an academy for young ladies. Some foul fiend has secretly distributed among the pupils a pamphlet urging them to eschew marriage; as any right-thinking Victorian father well knew, the only reason for educating daughters was to enable them to become better wives! Of course, the plot thickens nicely once Frances and her companion (formerly servant) Sarah begin to delve deeper. A perusal of Linda Stratmann's other titles available on Amazon reveals that she is well-versed in 19th century English crime. This familiarity enables her to create a completely authentic world peopled by characters who spring from the page in all their vivid Victorian glory. Her writing skills allow her to weave a complex story of lies, hidden scandal and more murders that will leave the reader impatient for the further adventures of the intrepid Frances.

Frances Doughty has been asked to look into the distribution of a pamphlet at a school for girls encouraging young women not to marry. Such literature is not considered to be a good influence on the daughters of gentlemen who attend the school.

When the maidservant, who has a somewhat shady past, goes missing Frances finds herself involved in what turns out to be a murder enquiry. She is also finding her fame is spreading and she is being asked to undertake more work that she can possibly manage. Sarah, her companion is keen to try her hand at detection and soon proves to be an able and willing assistant.

This is a well written mystery novel set against the background of Victorian Bayswater. It really brings to life how women at that time were treated as possessions rather than individuals in their own right.

The suffragist and other political meetings are well done and I really got a flavour of them while I was reading this book. I liked the way Frances' spiky relationship with the police inspector is growing as well. I'm looking forward to reading more about Frances Doughty

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to the female sleuths

I really enjoyed this book. the sense of period shines through and the characters are beautifully drawn. The premise and development of the plot are completely believable and the author has obviously done a lot of research. It has echoes of Carla Dunn's Daisy Dalrymple and Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs and might well appeal to fans of these authors, though the crime is perhaps darker and very relevant to modern day as well. The dialogue is seamless and the whole book is beautifully constructed.
I look forward to further books from this author.

A very clever book and one that has the feel of the period. Accurate language slips occasionally---author should learn when to use might rather than may---but the position of women is well portrayed and the characters are interesting if not entirely credible. I'll be happy when her new book comes out!

I can't think of a better representation of the emergence of modern womanhood. The settings feel authentic, Frances is just great and the developing warmth of Sharrock over the series deserved and funny. I read the complete series every few years. Pity only the 1st is on Audible

3.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the first book in this series 'The Poisonous Seed'

I enjoyed the first book in this series 'The Poisonous Seed', very much, which is why I bought the second, 'The Daughters of Gentlemen'. I felt this one was not quite so good. The story was not so tight and the characters not so well drawn. It did not hold my attention as the first book did. However, I liked it well enough to buy the third and fourth books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Triumph

I eagerly awaited the second adventure with Frances - and I wasn't disappointed - Frances sets out to discover the culprit with all the thought and intrigue we saw in her first adventure. A great plot, well written and containing an immense amount of research. I got lost in the book and wished my commute was longer. If you are not yet acquainted with Frances then read this one and the first . Linda Stratman is in the league of the great mystery writers. i look forward to more adventures with Frances.
