Death by Windmill: A Mother’s Day Murder in Amsterdam (Travel Can Be Murder Cozy Mystery Series Book 3) Kindle Edition
Wanderlust Tours guide Lana Hansen and her mother, Gillian, haven’t seen eye to eye in over a decade, ever since Lana was wrongly fired from her job as an investigative reporter. So when Lana’s boss invites Gillian to join her upcoming Mother’s Day tour to the Netherlands, Lana is less than pleased.
What could be worse than spending ten days with her estranged mother? Lana is about to find out…
The tour begins on a high note when the majority of guests bond during their visit to the Keukenhof Gardens and a cruise around the picturesque canals of Amsterdam.
Despite her initial reservations, Lana thinks this might be the best group she had ever led. Until she discovers one of her guests—a recent retiree named Priscilla—is the person who destroyed her career in journalism.
All Lana can see is red. But circumstances dictate that she figure out a way to lead the tour, make peace with her mother, and not murder her guest. She doesn’t know whether she can handle the pressure.
Lana needn’t worry. Shortly after their fight, Priscilla falls off the balcony of a historic windmill at Zaanse Schans. Was she pushed or simply careless? The investigating officers suspect murder—and topping their suspect list is Lana’s mom!
Can Lana save Gillian? Or will her mother end up spending the rest of her days in a Dutch prison? Pick up Death by Windmill: A Mother’s Day Murder in Amsterdam now to find out!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLots of twists and turns in this one!! Enjoyed!! Lots of characters not telling the whole truth. A bit surprised at the murderer.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was such an intriguing mystery. I enjoyed the mother/daughter relationships and their effect on the course of the story. This was a very visually evocative story full of Dutch landmarks that really piqued my interest. This was a most enjoyable read!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’ve read the first two books in this series and I enjoyed all of them. Three stars from me means it is a good book. They aren’t great books but they are fun and entertaining. This one was a bit obvious to me and I had figured it out early on. The characters are good and I’ve grown to like them.
This book was a little frustrating for me because it had occasional missing or misplaced words that jerked me out of the story to re-read the sentences. There was also an irritating over-use of the word orphan to identify a character. She had a name and using orphan in its place so often got annoying. These very minor glitches would be easily corrected with an edit. They were minor and wouldn’t bother most people I suppose.
Bottom line is this is an entertaining book and I enjoyed it. If you are looking for a quick beach read you might like it.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother great story. This series is so interesting and I love the description of the different countries. Jennifer does a great job of describing in detail the different sites. You almost feel like you’re there and can dream about yourself as one of the guests. Highly recommend you won’t be disappointed
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDeath by Windmill: A Mother’s Day Murder in Amsterdam is the third book in the Travel Can Be Murder Cozy Mystery Series by Jennifer S. Alderson, and I’m happy I have the additional books in hand to read as well. Each cozy mystery takes me to a new destination, and the descriptions of the sites, the foods, and the modes of transportation make me feel like I am there. Even if I never get to travel to Amsterdam, I feel like I already have been there since there are so many wonderful details woven throughout.
We are reunited with many characters we’ve met before. Lana is one of the tour guides of Wanderlust Tours, which is owned by her landlord, Dottie. They have a good relationship until Dottie takes it upon herself to try and reunite Lana and her mother, who have been estranged for ten years. The Mother’s Day trip is filled with mothers and daughters, and Dottie even decides to travel with them. We got to know the characters a little at a time, and some were just not likable to me.
There are twists and turns to the story, filled with travel adventures and several deaths, some of which could be murder. Amateur sleuth Lana decides to sift through the clues to see who is the number one suspect, especially since her mother seems to be the one the police are most interested in. As more and more intel is gathered and clues sifted through, there are many suspects with a grudge against the deceased. But what about the others?
There is closure when the whodunnit is solved, and a sweet romance is added to the mix. The story had a good flow, but many essential details seemed to be overlooked until the end of the story, and it was wrapping up. I figured out whodunnit earlier as I connected the dots sooner than the others.
If you like to armchair travel to new places or places you’ve already been with a bit of mystery and romance, pull up a chair and relax as you turn the pages to figure out whodunnit with Death by Windmill!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLoved Amsterdam! I was there for a few hours, just long enough to see a small portion of the Rijksmuseum and a short canal cruise, and that just whet my appetite for Amsterdam. This book REALLY makes me want to go back and explore much more.
The plot herein was good, and believable to the point where so many people who hated one of the women on the tour "just happened" to also be on the tour. That part stretched credulity just a bit. But Ms Alderson made it work. No shortage of suspects here!
This series is great for travelers of any kind....young, old, group, solo, intrepid or armchair. Makes you want to get up and go!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this book, not just for the mystery but also for the descriptions of the Netherlands. I'm from Rotterdam but I would almost be tempted to visit some places in Amsterdam. As for the mystery: the identity of the murderer was no surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death by windmill
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSo nice to add to my Europe-crime bookshelf on Goodreads. This is a light mystery, with many female characters as it focuses on a Mother's day tour. The setting brings us to many locations in Amsterdam, a picturesque, modern and quaint city all at once.
Some of the mystery issues are not that hard to spot - but you try working them in to a tour guide's tribulations as she organises everyone, tries to patch up issues with her mother, and phones America for clues when her mom is accused of murder. This is a carefully plotted mystery with tasty food and stunning visuals even during a walk in the park.
I read the Kindle version. This is an unbiased review.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3rd in series
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe first 2 in series were 5 stars but this lacked the same spirit. It was easy to determine the killer, the secrets weren't surprising . I also felt lana's reunion with her mom, plus her immediate connection to a new man seemed forced. The best part was using Amsterdam as the backdrop. I might read further in the series as the 4th is set in Scotland.

4.0 out of 5 stars Windmills and murder
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhile I did enjoy this book it's not my favourite in the series. I think this is because it was too predictable, I had worked out who the killer was and why fairly early and there was no twist to make it more interesting. The story started out good with lots of drama and plenty of suspects, okay the whole group had a reason to hate the victim but then it sort of tailed off while they were busy visiting the different locations. Also the main character seemed a bit unsure who to investigate and would start to look at one then get side tracked by another suspect. Otherwise I enjoyed it. Another trip to a location I have never been with some fun characters. I liked that Dotty interfered in Lana's relationship with her mother by inviting her along, it was nice to learn more about what happened between them and the drama that unfolded. This is the third book in the series and as each trip is in individual locations with different characters it can be read as a standalone, the only constant is you join Lana on a memorable trip while she solves a murder and I can't wait to join her on her next adventure.
Being estranged from your mother is hard especially on mother's day, so Lana jumps at the chance to take a group of women on a tour of the Netherlands during that period. Only her boss has a surprise in store for Lana, she has invited her mother to join them in the hopes that bridges can be mended. Things while not smoothly go okay until the guests work they all have a reason to hate one of the other guests on the trip, including Lana herself. When that guest dies it seems Lana's mother had the biggest reason to hate her of them all, she was the cause of the estrangement between her and her daughter. Can Lana put the past behind her and prove her mother isn't a killer? Or will this be another mother's day to forget?
