Decanus: A thrilling Roman adventure set in Ancient Britain (Quintus Roman Thrillers Book 2) Kindle Edition
Ancient Rome meets Ancient Britannia…
Julius Quintus Quirinius and his cohort sail to the mysterious land of Britannia. They have been sent on a mission to scout out the savage country and battle the local tribesman to pave the way for their emperor.
But before they can land, a violent storm scatters their ships, separating Quintus, newly promoted to Decanus, from some of his comrades. In seeking them, he encounters Britons who may be friend or foe.
Betrayal is in the air when he discovers the missing legionaries have been captured by a local tribe. And the tribesmen are not willing to release the Romans alive.
Quintus is prepared to rescue his men or die in the attempt. His oath demands it. But can the legionary training of the Roman soldiers defeat the fierce foreign tribesmen?
Or will Quintus’ first foreign mission be his last?
DECANUS is the second book in the Quintus Roman Thrillers series: action-packed, authentic historical military adventures set in Ancient Rome.

About the author

My years of publishing academic texts are behind me - many are out of print although of course they still appear on my profile.
I am excited now to turn my hand to writing historical novels - set in the early years of the Augustan principate (1st century BCE). The first book in the Quintus Roman series ‘Legionary’ was published March 17th 2023. Second book, ‘Decanus’ was published August 26th 2023.
Delighted that both have been bought by Tantor Media and the audiobooks are now available from January 2024 (Legionary) and February 2024 (Decanus). Matthew Lloyd Davies does a brilliant job of narrating.
Third book (Optio) was published in January 2024 and number Four (Centurion) in September 2024. Next in the series: ‘Scutarius’ (shield-bearer) is about to enter first edit stage before going on pre release on Amazon. Thanks to all readers, especially those wonderful people who leave positive reviews.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2024If you are looking for a fast paced, exciting and unusual adventure, this is the book. Graphic combat: check. Well developed characters: check. Descriptive and unusual setting: check. Gripping plot: double check!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2023As was the first book, this is a detailed look at the philosophy and structures of the Legionaries. At the end of the last book they were sailing over to Britannia and this edition follows their adventures.
It continues to be a well-written action series, but short - leaving the reader with a host of unanswered questions and no conclusion to even this episode. If you're willing to sign on for the whole series, it is perhaps a worthwhile entertainment. For this reader - nope. I resent the conscious effort to not write a story with the classic beginning, and conclusion.
I will not continue.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2024It was a good book even though it was not what I expected when I bought it thought was about legends
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023I enjoyed this read, the Roman invasion of Britain is one of my favorite epochs of Rome and this book took me by surprise in interesting and charming ways!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2023This book was different from what I expected, but in a good way. Instead of full legions fighting Rome’s enemies, this story followed a small group of legionaries that survived a ship wreck in enemy territory. How they survived is the crux of the story and one heck of a story it is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Roman Adventure
Enjoyed the adventure from about the halfway point when I finally got all the characters figured out. Quite an interesting adventure and grew in strength as the book went on. Highly recommended but the reader must plow through the first half of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tale, well written
Mr Denny clearly knows his subject. I read a lot of historical fiction, particularly of the Roman period. This is a story told from the point of view of a close knit group of legionnaires who we met in the previous book “Legionary”. The characters are now well developed and their interactions interesting. This adventure set in Britannia between the Roman invasions is a page turner from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, good characters, not too bad at all
I've just finished Decanus, an interesting tale that meanders around a small part of ancient Britain with rarely a dull moment wherein the characters interact in somewhat predictable but, nevertheless suitable fashion. I'm just about to purchase the 3rd book of the series, Optio, and complete the trilogy. I hope there's more to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars average read
A bit different from most Roman legions stories. To each their own.

This book is a tale well told. The author well knows his subject.
