Morgan Brice is the romance pen name of bestselling author Gail Z. Martin. Morgan writes urban fantasy MM paranormal romance, with plenty of action, adventure and supernatural thrills to go with the happily ever after. Gail writes epic and urban fantasy, with less romance, more explosions.

All of the modern-day Morgan Brice and Gail Z. Martin series crossover, so characters from one series appear in cameos and on page in important secondary roles in books from other series. Each book can be read as a standalone, but the more you read the more the expanded universe of friendships and connections becomes clear.

Morgan and Gail believe that paranormal elements make any story even better, and her worlds are full of ghosts, psychics, shifters, creatures, vampires, monster hunters, and magic.

She's also a huge fan of the TV show Supernatural. (Chibi art by Kamidiox)

I love Seth and Evan together, so this time around it was definitely a change from the usual as they were apart for the majority of the story. But one thing this did allow for was a chance to shine a spotlight on those other members of the supernatural and paranormal-adjacent community who help support their fight against the witch disciples. It also showed how the guys can work independently from each other just as well as they can together—though obviously they’re better together ;-)

Seth and Evan get separated pretty early on in the book, and from there we know it’s a race against time to reunite them before something terrible happens. I was unsure how I’d feel about them not working together for the whole story like they usually do since I love the interaction between them, but it didn’t really bother me. I liked the introduction of Evan’s brother, and the part he played; I’m hoping we’ll see him pop up in future stories in the series (or any of the author’s other connected series).

I was on edge for most of the story with Seth being missing, and the author did a good job of keeping that tension level high. I felt myself getting just as impatient as Evan to find Seth, and just plain frustrated with the situation in which Seth was trapped in his own mind.

It was nice to have Kale Williams narrating again, and his even tone and pacing along with consistent character voices made this an enjoyable listen. The story itself was a 4.5-star read for me, and the narration gets 5 stars.

Seth and Evan are magic! In more ways than one! I love that the author has avoided the trap of making these stories even six stories in. I am enjoying being exposed to more of the supernatural world and its citizens. There is an amazing suspense storyline that is accompanied by a heartbreaking fantasy component. And the story doesn't shy away from the main characters feeling every moment of it

This book is a 5/5 for me. Seth and Evan are back at their adventures and this one does not disappoint. They are hunting the evil witches and Seth is captured. He is offered his greatest wish. Evan is left to search for him and the witch. Evan’s brother shows up and gets a crash course on what his brother really does. Seth has to be strong enough to turn down his wish in order to defeat this powerful with. This book has action and some bittersweet parts which make for a great read.

I love this connected universe so much and I really enjoy getting to see characters showing up again, as well as meeting new ones I'm sure we will see again. I appreciate the continued character development of Seth and Evan. As noted by another reviewer, their chemistry draws you in but I actually thought having them apart adds to their story. We are all individuals, not just who we are with, and seeing characters in a book reflect that is valuable. It also allows for Brice to add more dimension to them as individuals, and as a couple.

Good pacing in the story, it moved along well and I didn't feel like there were areas that bogged it down. I'm looking forward to the next installment - as well as what comes next in this universe!

This one is well done as always. Joe Mack and friends from one of her other series make guest appearances--I haven't read that one yet--still on the fence, but might after reading this. We also get iintroduced to Evan's brother Parker, and I hope we see more of him either in Joe Mack or Witchbane. The latest target played a very minor role, but it looks like he might appear in Joe Mack in the future, another reason to read it. She's managing to keep the series fresh even with similar plots. Minor spoilers: I love the parallel brothers stories, with Seth losing Jesse again and Evan gaining Parker.

Gail Z. Martin aka Morgan Brice continues to be one of those authors whose work excites me to distraction. Among the plethora of titles she has written, she is also responsible for her universe of the paranormal, which includes such series titles as (writing as Gail Z. Martin) DEADLY CURIOSITIES, SPELLS, SALT, & STEEL, and NIGHT VIGIL. Writing as Morgan Brice we have TREASURE TRAIL, KINGS OF THE MOUNTAIN, and FOX HOLLOW. Each of these series has its unique charm and tone making them wildly fun to read. They can also be quite thrilling and suspenseful as has been her WITCHBANE series, and with her latest novel of the series “The Devil You Know” she digs into one of the most intimate and personal parts of the human psyche, that being grief and loss.

Our heroes are Seth Tanner and Evan Malone. Seth’s younger brother Jesse was killed as part of a century-long series of murders, and not long after that, his parents were killed in a car accident. He took it upon himself to track down all of the men (witches) responsible for Jesse’s death in the hope of saving the lives of these witches’ potential victims. He rescued Evan from such a fate and in turn, they quickly became not only partners in this crusade, but they also fell in love with each other.

Brice’s latest “The Devil You Know” delivers a surprise by having Seth face his loss. To make it worse, it was done in a manner that was quite heartbreaking to read. The way this was done is not entirely unfamiliar, but Brice wrote Seth’s emotional journey in a way that hit me very hard. I dare say that anyone who has ever experienced a significant loss of a loved one might find Seth’s part of this story to be extremely resonant. Even before his arc is finished in this book there are telltale signs that when Seth comes out on the other side that he might be quite shattered by the experience.

Seth’s journey isn’t all that makes up this book. One of Brice’s greatest strengths in her books is the universe building that takes place and she does that through the introduction of new characters, and this happens here in such a delightfully enjoyable way. While our heroes are still relatively new (less than a year in their time) in their quest they are introduced to characters that are not only greatly more experienced, they’re also brought in with their unique skills and strengths making them extremely interesting to learn more about. I would not be surprised if some of the new characters we meet here are spun off into their series. At the very least, I can hope that we will see more of them soon in some of the other series Brice writes.

With its strengths, I only have two very minor quibbles. First, the final confrontation with this book’s villain felt too short. Our hero Evan, along with his new allies, did have some challenges he had to overcome before his final face-off with this book’s evil witch, but this time it almost felt too quick for it to resolve. The other was the aftermath of Seth’s tale. I felt there was a great opportunity to explore grief in its various stages, especially the bargaining stage given what Seth goes through. We only get glimpses of what Seth is dealing with after their battle with the witch and I would have liked to have seen something a bit more in-depth. Nevertheless, these two points did not take away my enjoyment of the book as evidenced by my sadness when I finished reading the last page. I was not prepared for the story to end!

I give “The Devil You Know” 4 out of 5 Garnet Rings.

I finished the book today wondering how long I was going to have to wait for the next one. Thankfully it came out a little over a week ago. Can't wait to start it as the series keeps getting better and better.

I am already a Morgan Brice fan so I looked forward to reading this book. This story was full of adventure and introduced us to more characters, both supernatural and human. There is an element of sadness as Seth is held prisoner and has some beautiful but also upsetting experiences. If you know about Dean and the Djinn then you may see the link. A very good read and of course I look forward to more.
