Devil’s Road (Devil's Road) Kindle Edition
Broken out of jail by an insane oligarch, Dutch McGuire—former getaway driver and carjacker—is tasked with one mission: investigate the mysterious vortex at the heart of Teijouan in order to win her freedom. But as cover, she must once again take part in the Devil’s Run, a road race circumnavigating the island in which the participants are as likely to be murdered by each other as by the kaiju - huge, dinosaur-like beasts - that roam its post-apocalyptic wastelands.
"The action is clear and exciting, there are some great monster encounters and excellent villains" - Theaker's Quarterly
"Overall it was so much fun to read. We get to see all kind of souped up super cars, shady schemes but throw in rifts, kaijus and sci-fi gimmicks and it’s just super enjoyable." - Fan Fi Addict

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020Devil’s road is a crazy hybrid science fiction novel by author Gary Gibson.
Not too far in the future, a mysterious rift has opened in the middle of the asian island of Teijouan. Regularly, kaiju emerge of several types from the rift and roam the island, kept on it by a barricade of Japanese warships. The rift also emits a « derangement field », preventing electronics from working, and even having effect on the human brain after a too long exposure.
Corporations have taken the opportunity to organize a death race running all around the island, the Devil’s Run. Because money. To take home the big prize, competitors have to race classic mechanical cars, and avoid the rather hostile and somewhat deadly monsters, with a human navigator (using an actual paper map).
Dutch McGuire has never won the Devil’s Run, but not for lack of trying. She nonetheless managed to survive it more times than anyone else. Her racing days seem to be over, however, as she has been jailed by Russians for an heist turned sour. That is, until a billionaire offers her a way out. His terms : that she enters the race once more, not to win it, but to retrieve something on the island.
The description for the book states « Pacific Rim meets Fast & Furious ». That’s not exactly how I would put it. Readers as old as I am would probably get a better idea of the story if I was to write « Pacific Rim meets Wacky Races », with an hint of « Annihilation » in the mix. Indeed, the colorful racers, their pumped up cars, and their sneaky schemes reminded me more of the Hanna Barbera cartoon of old. With added assorted light and heavy weaponry. And then, there is the rift.
It’s hard to imagine what can be the result of such a mix and, actually, it’s hard for me to describe it differently without spoiling anything. Even more so, it’s easy to see how it could work as a B-movie or an animated one, but how it could be a recipe for literary disaster. Don’t let such thoughts deter you : It’s actually quite the opposite. I’ve been really surprised by this mesmerizing, pedal to the floor adventure. No time lost in lengthy exposition, explanation or philosophy. It’s a pedal to the metal read from cover to cover.
If you’re in for a quick, fun read, full of roaring cars and giant monsters (who wouldn’t be ?), I highly recommend this book.
Thanks to Brain in a Jar books and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for this unbiased review.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024Somehow, when I read it, I thought a lot about Speed Racer and nostalgic times of watching that anime when I was a kid. This is that on steroids, with monsters lurking everywhere and a badass female race driver. A fun read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2020The story has a lot of cool ideas (Post-apocalyptic future? Heavily armed cars drag racing each other? Giant Kaiju monsters? Shut up and take my money!), but seems to end before it gets anywhere. Several great characters are introduced, then are killed unceremoniously "offscreen". The main heroine is rough around the edges enough without coming across as too unlikable, but she's practically the only character we get to know in the story. While there is an ending to this story, it feels a little anticlimactic. Maybe the author will decide to a sequel...
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2021Devil's road is about a car race, but it is also about the future, the past, and what a single person can do to make things right. In the future when a portal unleashes terrifying monsters, a brave few every year race through the island, trying to beat not only the other racers, but the monsters. Only a few people have seen the Kaiju and was able to tell others about it. Dutch McGuire is not only a racer, but she is one of the only people to successfully survive the Devil's race multiple times.
That is why when she finds herself in a far off prison someone works to set her free. Their letting her go is not without wanting something in return. They want her to race in the Devil's race. She is all for that, I mean if she can get her car. However, they want her to do specific things while there. One of which is to not finish the race. Something that Dutch has never done, and her intelligence and questions start to get her in trouble.
Now I am all for a good car story, I have read a couple lately actually. Add in monsters, a race with no real winner, and a dystopian type future? Sign me up. This is a good story, and one with an end that I was not expecting. It was the end that I now know I needed in my life, but not one that I was expecting. I think that is what took this book from a four fang to a four and a half fang. It wasn't just a good story about how a young woman is up against the best of the best. No it was also one about how she found herself on the Devil's road. A place that chews drivers up before eating them, she found what she was looking for, even though she didn't know what that was.
Maybe I am looking too much into it, but for me this was about a race. It was about monsters, and it was about a young woman trying to carve out a small bit of herself when everyone wanted a piece.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2021You definitely won't forget this one anytime soon. The characters are so real and the action is scary ... I love this book. It is almost like watching my fav action heroes play the lead roles and then add the scary monsters and pray Dutch finds the road to a new paradise. Wait for me!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short but action packed
Decided to take a punt on this after downloading the free Our Lady of Holy Death. Devils Road is a crazy mix of Pacific Rim and Deathrace, and I love it. Nothing too deep here, its only 150 or so pages, but boy, is there some action packed in. Will definitely be buying more GG that's for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short and immensely enjoyable!
Overall: +8
Just like it says on the blurb, Fast and Furious meets Pacific Rim..a race through a island filled with various Kaiju's. A roller coaster ride with enough twists and turns not just in the race but in the plot too makes this a totally fun book to read.
Freshness: +10
Dutch was sprung out of prison to participate in a dangerous race held in a Japanese Island which is run over with various types of Kaiju monsters to retrieve a secret cargo. Straight out of the gun, the action starts and doesn't stop till the penultimate page. A book, I'd love to watch as a movie. Immensely entertaining.
Writing/Plot/Pacing: +8
Nothing complex, but gripping. Very few info dumps, but even that is fascinating and kept within the context of the book. The characters are introduced early then stage is set and we get to know about the Island and monsters. Then actual race starts and action kicks in. New revelations occur, plot twists keep you engrossed.
Characters: +7
Probably my only gripe about this book, but very understandable considering it's shortness. Book just drops you in at the start and you don't get a deeper understanding of the intentions and/or background of the characters. I wish the book a bit longer and we could understand the characters and overall world more. The macro world which is totally ignores also sounds intriguing and wish author spent more time/pages there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and engaging
The novel was a good read. Started and kept being interesting throughout the whole novel with some neat twists and turns. The author's worldbuilding is engaging and done well.
I had a good time reading it, so it was well worth the time investment.

3.0 out of 5 stars short, fun but not enough substance
I love the author, but this little book did not really make much of an impression on me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking read!
Gald this was a Kindle version, I didn't have to put it down. If you've read anything else by Gary - you'll love this. If you haven't - you're in for a treat.
