Devin's Boys: Small Town MM Romance Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 38 ratings

Coming home was supposed to be the end of something, until Mikal barreled into his life….and he wasn’t alone.

For Devin McKay, music has been his lover, his drug, and his best friend for as long as he can remember, but there was always something he denied himself while he pursued it. Now that his band has broken up and he’s returned to his hometown of Stoney Brook, he’s settled into a new, somewhat drunken routine, while he tries to get accustomed to this new phase in his life. The last thing he expected was an old friend to send a troubled young musician his way.

Mikal needs help, or rather, his best friend, Moon, needs help getting over the blinding bouts of stage fright that have been plaguing him for the last year. He’ll do anything to get to the root of Moon’s issues, even follow along with the unorthodox methods Devin prescribes for them. After all, Devin was a success in the industry, while Mikal and Moon have been struggling to get a foot in the door.

They aren’t the only ones struggling. Moon’s longtime friend with benefits, Derrick, spends most days rudderless and pretending to be okay. There are things he needs that Moon tries desperately to give him, but Moon has needs too. All their pieces have jagged edges, but with a little twisting and turning, and a lot of songs, they might discover a way they can all fit.

About the Author

LAYLA DORINE lives among the sprawling prairies of Midwestern America, in a house with more cats than people. She loves hiking, fishing, swimming, martial arts, camping out, photography, traveling, and visiting museums and haunted places.

Layla got hooked on writing as a child and she hasn't stopped writing since. Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she's met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn't writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book and a kitty on her lap.

Another "All-American Boy" series book, this one had a few moments of surprise, but it more than covered itself. The fact that there was a short time frame for the books from announcement to publication may explain why some readers didn't feel the full story, but to me, I either inferred it from the written story or felt it from the story's tone and direction. All in all, another great short read.

This was the first book I’ve read by this author and won’t be the last. A quick and enjoyable read! The characters were all fantastic and it had a great storyline! A really sweet read! I am voluntarily leaving an honest review for this complimentary copy of this book

This was a little confusing at first going between four different characters’ but when I got a few chapters in I struggled to put it down. I loved Devin, Mikal, Moon and Derrick! I loved Moon’s family; they were a hoot!! Lots of emotions, connection and chemistry is shared by all four. Overall, this was a great story, hooked me and introduced me to a new author! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed smoothly, highly recommend. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

2,5 stars rounded up because of this author’s writing abilities.

I know Layla Dorine can write beautiful story’s. I have read a few books by her hand and enjoyed them tremendously, loving her way with words, almost poetically in the way she takes us on a journey.
So why didn’t I feel that way this time?
The first chapter pulled me into something that felt like a bit of chaos and my autistic brain could not fully comprehend what was going on. Who was who and what happened to them, and what role did they play?
There was something about the mc’s names too. I could handle Moon and Mikal, but I kept confusing Devin and Derrick, and I think I must have read about half the book before I stopped mixing them up.
Due to all the above, I never felt connected to the mc’s, nor to the story, and I’m really sorry for that, because I would really love for more readers to discover some of Layla’s beautiful books, and I just wished this was an equally amazing experience for me, but it just wasn’t.
So, yes, probably a case of ‘it’s me, not the book’.
Never mind me, skip this review and read why others rated 4 and 5 stars instead.

I thought this book was well thought out and it was a good stepping stone for all the characters. There were some parts that I thought were lacking a bit of nuance but I enjoyed the book for what it is.

I have to say the first chapter of this book had me feeling out of sorts! It started off crowded and chaotic with these young guys and their goings on! But that was the beauty of this story. Once Devin enters their lives, he has a special effect on each of them! I thought it was amazing how this author got us to understand and care about and connect with all of these men in shorter novella size story! I received an ARC, and this was a steamy and sweet romance with a unique little plot bringing them together!

These guys are pretty great together, I’m not normally into books where’s there is more than 2 people in a relationship but once I started reading I couldn’t stop!
Their dynamic just somehow works! My heart went out for all the boys but especially Derrick, he has been though so much! And Mikal make me so mad but I was so glad things worked out in the end for them! 😀😀❤️❤️

Okay, there are elements of this story I liked and some that I don’t. I didn’t really like the story until Devin and his boys got together. Before then was beyond confusing. I felt that the whole time I was missing something? I thought these all were stand alones? I don’t know. I just felt like I was supposed to know more than what was offered to me. It was all just okay I guess. I’m glad they effortlessly got together, especially Derrick, I didn’t know he was going to be in the polycule. So cute.
